73 Men Sailed Up For This Live Blog and It Was 19 Who Led Them

One of my favorite tunes of all time and a tribute to the best frigging Captain in the history of professional sports. What became inevitable on June 7th, 1997 won’t actually occur for 48 more hours. But you just know tonite’s all about 19.
So let’s Live Blog this bitch, eh?
I’m betting HNIC will show most, if not all, of this…
Former Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman, ex-Wings Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille, Brian Leetch and Lou Lamoriello will be honored tonight during a pregame ceremony at Air Canada Centre.
The five will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday night.
The festivities will push back the start of the Wings-Leafs game by 20 minutes, for a 7:28 puck drop.

By the way, Leino is next. The whole line is going down.

Seems like there’s been a lot of misunderstandings around here lately.
For the record, I’m always joking.

No, no no no no, not at all ..... I said something about making a baby; then you said “hard to do it on your own”; so then I joked that you were implying I’m a loner who couldn’t possibly have relations with a woman, thus “serving” me, or burning/insulting me. All joke-y though, for reals.
Posted by Triple Deke Tyler from Lansing on 11/07/09 at 10:02 PM ET
Ah, okay - I was thinking (in my own head) that if you could figure out a way to make a baby alone, you could make a ton of money working for the Xerox corporation. You know, for inventing a new method of reproduction. ![]()
(But you seem very sweet, so I can’t see you having any trouble.)

I rather it be Bert. He’s really just floating along out there. Ms B would love that

Voox. Throw a molotov at McCrimmon and another at Lebda as they leave the building tonight. Dissipointing effort against a team that played in Carolina 24 hours earlier.
Better a fibula than a tibia.Much less recovery time needed. The replay looked pretty brutal .
+1111
Wings are rested and Leafs are coming off a road game. Unbelievable.
Re JWill, it’s better to break a bone than to tear up ligaments, right?

Please, please, please, PLEASE hockey gods!!! Make this happen!!! Whatever you want - I’d do anything. Well ... no, on second thought, I’d really do anything.

We should have a conference call-style LB sometime over telephones. I’m sure that would go much better.

That would be a disaster. Especially as soon as someone starting quoting Datsyuk and everyone else started cracking up. I know SOMEONE would start.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/07/09 at 10:15 PM ET
That would be a disaster.
It would be pretty wild. The only thing you would be able to pull out of the jumbled yelling would be a *thump* noise whenever Drew mentions Heatley and his 70 goals.

4 tough games coming up CBJ, VAN, ANA and DAL.
1/2 our team in the MASH unit…?
It is looking like “wait ‘till November” has become “I can’t wait for the Olympics”.

Absolutely. Tendons and ligaments attach to bones and muscles. Nerves are affected as well. Bones are a simple fix compared to the latter.

man, talk about insult to injury. Williams breaks his leg, then detroit gets owned 5-1 by the leafs.
Posted by Luongo-is-my-hero on 11/07/09 at 11:27 PM ET
I don’t need to see any highlights, because I think we all knew this was going to happen. Apparently, the Wings just can’t get up for a game against the Leafs. They let them ruin last year’s banner raising game, and now this year, they let the Leafs ruin Yzerman’s HHOF weekend.
The more prompting question though, is what the fuching hell hockey gods?! This is getting fuching ridiculous, you can fuch off now. We’re approaching like 2002 Canaidens territory (or whatever year it was when they had something like 500 man games lost due to injury). I think the number of players who have played in every game this season is less that the number of injured players. Piet Van Zant has to get on the ball, because at this rate, we’re gonna lose every regular to a long term injury by April.
So who goes up to the top lines now? I personally like John W’s idea of a Helm-Datsyuk-Eaves line, but it’s likely going to be Leino who gets bumped up, even though he doesn’t deserve it.
I’m trying not to hit the panic button, but maybe Tick Tock should look into getting a scoring winger, because Helm and Eaves, despite how awesome they are, aren’t goal scorers. And it would be a shame if they lost their confidence because they were asked to be something they aren’t. I have no idea who would even be an attractive option though, and someone who wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Tough night in Toronto. I am sorry I missed Celebrating The Stevie, but the boy was begging to go to see the Texas Stars tonight. The text message updates from ESPN about the Wings game were not pleasant.
Posted by Aimee in Austin on 11/08/09 at 12:09 AM ET
I teared up when Stevie Y came on the ice. Just amazing to see him be honored.
Unfortunately, the Wings could not back it up. What an ugly game and then another injury to boot.
I don’t know what else to say because I’m so stunned. To go from such a high after the SJ win to this..
Ready, set, VOMIT!

Yeah, so I’m the gamewrecker. I can’t handle that if watching it on TV means never watching that kind of effort again.
There was a guy in front of me who had a cowlick in the front of his head. What kind of dicklicker had a front-cowlick? What a tool. I wanted to grab him and cut it off.
All seriousness though, the Toronto crowd was pretty cool, even if the Wings tried to go black hole and suck all the happiness out of what should have been an awesome night.
I don’t ,now how it looked on television, but Rafalski was the worst player in red tonight. Man, that dude sucked. I mean, Lebda sucked too,but Raffi was shit on skates..

I was actually thinking a 19 podcast would be kinda awesome if anybody is interested.
Also, Voox is *#$%@& cool. Toronto is a bad ass city, and if we played the Leafs 82 games a season, I guarantee they’d make the playoffs. Good thing I couldn’t find a bridge tonight, makes it easier to keep from jumping off.

That would be something. The only downfall would be my face melting off when I find out that one of you, whom I presume to be male, is actually a woman (or vice versa). Gender surprises always blow my mind, regardless of whether or not I’ve given this person money beforehand.
Glad you’re having fun though, sort of.

Another cruddy effort, another example of maddeningly inconsistent play from one game to the next, another average goalie made to look like the second coming of Uke, and another injury that means at this rate we’ll be fielding half the Griffs by December. And it had to happen last night, of all nights.
If anybody needs me, I’ll be downstairs in the meth lab.

So, hockey gods, what did I do? Stop punishing me, please. Since last season:
-Lilja: fight concussion
-Hossa: knee (and the “we knew it” shoulder)
-Datsyuk: charley’s horse and the curse of the blocked shot
-Holmstrom: knee
-Rafalski: hernia
-Ericsson: apendicitis
-Draper: neck cartilage
-Lidstrom: balls
-Zetterberg: back and groin
-Helm: shoulder
-Cleary: groin
-Bertuzzi: groin (helluva party, hey guys?)
-Franzén: knee
-Filppula: wrist
-Eaves: the curse of the blocked shot
-May: poked eye
-Williams: leg
What the hell is that?
And the worst part is that that I’m sure I forgot something. Who of the 19ers kicked a puppy, showered someone with the car in a puddle of water, cursed old ladies, mocked Ferris Bueller or comitted one of the other capital sins?
Rush everyone, it’s sunday, all of you quick to the church.

Hey, look what I found:
And that game is tomorrow against the Leafs, so it’s basically an assured win (note: if the Leafs win I’ll take full responsibility).
That’s from Babcock’s Death Stare. Damn you.

Morning, 19.
There were things I learned last night:
1) There are times Raffi makes Lebda look like a pharmacist. If he played any worse, there could be a call to put him down and make him glue.
2) The Wings cannot beat the Leafs. Ever. Seeing the joy on the faces of Leafs fans last night made me realize the bigger picture. The Wings annual meltdown vs. Toronto is the Wings way of giving back to the hockey community. It is the Annual Wings Charity Game where the Wings bring joy to those with little hope.
3) The ACC is cursed and only Griffins should play there during the regular season. Want proof? The last two regular season games at ACC: Sammy broke Cleary’s jaw, and Williams breaks his tibia. JFC, Jobu must be appeased twice as much heading into the ACC.
4) JJ and his sis are great people and hockey fans. And Toronto gave them the appropriate attention when they wore their Wings jerseys. From literally the moment they stepped out of their gate, to the last cab ride back to the hotel, people commented. And honked horns. And laughed at us postgame. But JJ and his sis had great humour when dealing with the attention. I think they loved being in a city with so many hockey nuts.
5) Exactly how weak your beer is by %. We measure alcohol content in beer by volume, and not content like Americans. The verdict, our beer is roughly 5x stronger per sip. But JJ made America proud. He guzzled it all in copious amounts with nary a slur nor a slowdown. Honourary Canadian, bitches.
6) I am a Gamewrecker now and forever.

Somehow, I was able to read the writing on the wall last night. Willy gone 8 weeks, lovely.
Hopefully last nights scheduled hockey game was a normal aberration for the Wings who generally don’t bother to play well against the Leafs. Said Stuie:
“It’s a pretty elite group of NHLers. For us to have an effort like that is very disappointing,” Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart said. “There was a lot of history in the building tonight and we threw a stinker.
Odds and ends.
The PP needs to go to rehab to battle the whiskey dick:
Detroit went 0-for-5 on the power play, which has struggled even as the team has shown improvement. The Red Wings are 3-for-29 on the power play in their past seven games.
Leino, Lebda, Helm -2. Draper -3.
Next games are B2B:
Wed 11 Nov at CBJ 16 g/p, 9-5 2, 20 pts. 3 in Conf, 1st in Central
THR 12 NOV vs VAN 18 g/p, 10-8-0, 20 pts. 8 in Conf, 3rd in Northwest
SAT 14 NOV vs. ANA 15 g/p, 6-7-2, 14 pts. 13 in Conf, 5th in Pacific
Standings:
DET: 14 gp, 7-5-3 17 pts, lost 1, (10 in Conf, 3 in Central [3 pt behind CBJ])
Stats:
DET: .567 pt% (16), 2.80 g/g (15), 3.07 ga/g (23), 0.81 5-5f/a (24), 20.0 pp (15), 75.9 pk (26), 33.7 s/g (3), 28.8 sa/g (9)
Going into this week, I thought if the Wings took 4 of 6 points, that would be good (I confess that I had the Wings winning the Laffs, and losing either SJS or BOS).
DET/BOS win 2-0
DET/SJS win 2-1
DET/TOR crushed 5-1
For DET to get 4 of 6 pts this week will be a real test.
The echos of FIRE McCrimmon can be heard in the distance.
