A Chance Holland Had To Take

Woops. Watch out Klessel.
Since I correctly predicted the Bertuzzi deal, I’ve decided to charge 11 dollars per page view, create a “chart” and hire Andy Strickland to impersonate Nostradamus on a weekly basis.
Conditional and a pick? Considering the moves made by Bubba and The Team We Don’t Speak Of, Holland had to take this chance.
I like it. I’ve liked it all along. I’m assuming a physical will determine when or if Bert actually dons the Winged Wheel.
Anyone want to guess how long it will take little Little Mitch to pen a sobbing column of outrage? I’m betting 24 hours.
More later.

Briefly, here’s how I look at these trades:
Samuelsson-Lang-Williams
-OR-
Calder-Lang-Bertuzzi.
It cost the team a 2nd and either another pick or prospect to make that happen. I find it impossible to call that anything other than a huge win. Of course, if Bertuzzi’s back explodes tomorrow it becomes a bad deal, but if any top 6 Wings player bites it (with the possible exception of Homer) Detroit was toast anyway.
This gets Cleary off a scoring line, which he was woefully unsuited for. It gets Williams off the team, which isn’t a bad thing. It gets Samuelsson off the second line. It makes the Wings much bigger and much tougher to play against than they were two days ago.
Detroit’s certainly not in the top 4 as far as toughness goes… but I think they’re out of the bottom 4, too.

Would anyone else just like to see what Bertuzzi could do on a line with Flip and Hudler? Maybe go back and time and recreate what happened with Datsyuk and Zetterberg letting Hull ride with them.

Yeah, it was a good gamble for Kenny to take. Everyone is talking that Detroit is tougher and better now. But the fact remains that Bertuzzi isn’t healthy yet. So, for all the hype, Calder so far is what the Wings really have.
Seems like the Wings could have swung one more deal, a gritty player, Jamal Mayers and dump Maltby. Or maybe even get better on D, such as Mattias Norstrom and dump Andre Lilja.
So for what it’s worth, i think Kenny really was only shooting for the second round and then go out for golf. But he’ll have cap space to work with and then he can sign Ryan Smith!

Dump Maltby? Are you crazy. He is the human ping pong ball! He is fast, has one of the hardest checks in the NHL, and he has a tendency to score timely short-handed playoff goals! What are you thinking?

I like the Bertuzzi trade in combination with the Calder trade. It may be only 2 players, but if Bertuzzi can be healthy, I feel the Wings now have a true second line and the horses to match up with any western team. Just my opinion though.
