Update 1315 EST: Khan(!) reports on his blog that Homer skated a full practice today and looks like he could be back Monday. That blog post has been up for at least an hour now and hasn’t been deleted or changed so it’s probably true.

Sssshhhh...don’t tell anyone. My wife’s planning a surprise birthday party for me tonite that I’ve already been told about by at least 4 different attendees.
How does that affect you? Not much, but there will be little to a realistically-zero amount of posts today, and I won’t be participating in the live blog tonite. I will be pretending not to worry about the score, and only focusing on acting surprised.
Feel free to use this post as tonite’s LB. Also, if you’re feeling all holiday spirity and stuff tonite...you can , which I’ll pretend to be reading on my blackberry as if they were super important work items that I just can’t get away from because I’m so damned important.

Pretending to read “important updates from work,” huh?
I worked for a physician who would ask someone in the lab to page him 20 minutes after a staff meeting started so he could get out of it, because by that time anything important had been taken care of and he had more important work to do. No one questions a doctor with a pager going off.
Happy birthday! Birthdays make me terribly depressed (so I admire the spunk of anyone who can celebrate a birthday after about 20 of them). Mine is coming up in less than a month, but I refuse to acknowledge the relentless drumbeat of impending mortality. I don’t want any reminding that I’m another year closer to the grave.

Damn Birthdays just come whether you deserve ‘em or not.
Happy Birthday Bill,
Whatever do you want updates for. It is not like you can change lines, or the goaltenders, or even piss of the Refs.
When life interferes with blogging or hockey you just gotta go with it.
Just don’t let anything interfere with your drinking.

Every darn year you have a birthday around this time.
Next year, change it to an off-day!
Enjoy, and keep the blackberry handy.

Happy Birthday from the left coast! I sense that ole Blackberry will be humming tonite.

Happy Birthday, Bill! And to hell with pretending to be surprised. Surprise ‘em right back. Walk in wearing nothing but a santa hat and a carefully placed arrangement of mistletoe.
Or as I like to call it, my “Midlife Crisis” attire.
...
Come to think of it, there are reasons why my wife doesn’t throw me any more parties.

Happy Birthday, Bill… and many more!!! So, I take it your wife never reads your blog, huh?

Three icings in the first four minutes… bleh.

Psvel’s fortunate Vokoun’s skate was there, otherwise that shot would have gone straight through the crease.

Happy Birthday Bill!
I like Cleary with the Eurotwins. He can replace Homer’s physicality, if not quite his net-front insanity.

Haha. Man. What can you do about those two goals except laugh. A couple of the best dmen ever no less.

Who needs the Panthers? Maybe in the third, the Wings’ defense can come out wearing the road whites.... Sheesh. I’ve never seen anything like this.

Bad luck for bad luck. Good work by the second unit.

Happy Birthday Chief: At least you got to go to a party—my lovely wife, yesterday afternoon, suddenly decided it would be a good idea to do some last minute shopping. As a result, I missed the first two periods of the game.
I cannot recall ever seeing two penalty shots in a game, and for the same team—in the same period, no less. Its probably not the first time—but I’ve not seen it. The same team that also scores two goals for the opposition. Musta been the “Ghosts of Christmas”—cause that was weird.
Happy Birthday Again.

Regarding the penalty shot thing—Maybe I should have read KHAN! (evertime I write that I have visions of the corinthian leather man in Conan attire) first:
The Red Wings hadn’t scored on a penalty shot in a regular season game in 12 years before this week. Now, Valtteri Filppula has scored on two penalty shots in a span of three games. Detroit, awarded two penalty shots in a game for the first time in franchise history

OKAY OKAY—This is the last comment on the penalty shot thing. From David Goricki at the DETNEWS:
Filppula joins Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman and Ebbie Goodfellow to score more than one penalty-shot goal during their Red Wings careers.
Theres some trivia for you. By the way, aside from the Flying Circus, and Cleary, I think Fill has been the best “Secondary Scorer”, roleplayer, on the team. He is strong on the puck makes smart plays, and doesnt seem to have the dreaded turnover (ala Hair Club boy).
The limited action I saw last night, Sammy (I’ll shoot from anywhere although I couldn’t hit a barn door) sure seemed to do his best Lang imitation I’ve seen—well since Bobby left.

Happy Birthday! Good thing you didn’t see the two “own goals”. Yikes! I left to do some Christmas shopping so I missed the third period. Had to do some shopping while my daughter was out of the house, otherwise it wouldn’t get done!
From a fellow December birthday person, I hope you had a great birthday and all the best for the coming year!
I get to celebrate my birthday with the Wings/Avs game! (a few days early but what the heck, since I’m turning 40, I’m making it a long, drawn out celebration!)

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields
"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats
"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."

"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
