As Expected, Mac Is Back

Updated below with quotes from McCarty and the organ-I-zation.

Via TSN,

The Detroit Red Wings have signed right wing Darren McCarty to a one-year contract and assigned him to Grand Rapids on a 14-day conditioning loan.

‘’Darren has earned this opportunity,’’ said Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland. ‘’He’s made great strides in the past several months and we wanted to give him the chance to continue in hopes he can contribute to the Red Wings once again.’’

Khan(!) reports the Wings expect him in Detroit around 10 March.  Wings schedule: 5 March, home, St. Louis; 9 March, home, Bubba; 11 March, home, Chicago.

The Wings site has a full story up on the signing, including quotes from Holland and McCarty.

He admits that in the past he never thought this day would ever come. But more recently he’s allowed himself to believe that it could.

“I always hoped,” McCarty said. “One of the biggest disappointments was having to leave. But it’s funny how life works itself out and I can really relate to talking to Ozzie about leaving and coming back.

“I had to change some things in my life. I had to change, and I think that where I’m at now is what has made me successful here and has made me an integral part in winning some championships. That’s sort of the character and things that I’m prepared to bring in the dressing room and on the ice. I can’t express my excitement.”

This makes me soooo happy! Even if he doesn’t even play a single minute with the Wings, it is still a victory for him.

I second that.  Just the fact that he has his life back on the right direction is a victory for him.

Glad to see that he has his life committed first to sobriety and then everything else will fall into place.

Welcome back from the brink, Mac!  Glad to see you come around.

The 9th against the Preds would be perfect. Now, let’s see, who on the Preds could D-Mac take on in his first fight as a reborn Red Wing? Hmmmm. Gee, that’s tough one.

Off-topic alert!

Andy at Battle of Alberta had a thought-provoking post up.

The question was which player would you least like to see traded to your team (or which player you would hate most to see traded away, and which team would be the worst destination).  Interesting situations to contemplate.

Grandpa is smiling somewhere.  He was happy when I told him Mac would possibly be back. grin

Now, if we could only get the blue line back - but I’ve had the thought over the past week or so that this could almost be a good thing, having everyone hurt.  Granted, I really would like us to finish at the top of the league, but it’s the second season that really matters.  I just hope the poultry doesn’t land someone huge, and if they do that they don’t gel with the team and actually cause problems...its a reach I know, but you never know.

I can just see it...Teemu and Hossa arguing over hair gel and who gets to sit next to Scotty on the plane.  smile

Maybe he had a hand in it actually coming together. If so, I hope he’s got a few more happy surprises in the works for us!

Looks like the Avs are in a nostalgic mood, too: Forsberg is back in the NHL and back in the West.

Couldn’t just sign with Philly, could you, Forsberg.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

Wanna Feel Smart?

Does confusion make you sad? When you read words like "enigma" and phrases like "Thanks Gary. Ass", do you wonder why mean people speak in languages you don't understand? Fret no longer friend! The A2Y Glossary will bring you great joy and enlightenment.

How Others View The A2Y 19

"Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on."
--St. Louis Game Time

"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey

"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats

"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
--Thhom

"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp

"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont

"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
--Paul Nicholson

"I actually like the Detroit team and have a sh&% load of respect for them, but their fans are the biggest douches next to Canadians."
--KStewy, PensBlog Commenter

"Just when it looks like we have bottomed out, the 19 hit a new low."
-A2Y legend, Hockeytown Todd

"And for the record, I don't hate the Red Wings, I hate their fans."
--Douche Bag at Puck Daddy who isn't Wyshynski
