At Puck Daddy? Objectivity Can Suck It At Least 1/3 Of The Time

Update: Received an email from Wyshynski and discussion of it deserves to be included in this post. That’s been added to the bottom.
—-
Considered leaving this alone, just letting it lie and seeing if you guys happened across it without a prompt from me.
Then I realized that’s not really my style. Because I’m redundant, I’ll tell you again that I like Greg Wyshynski. I think he’s a great, funny writer with a good mind for our game. Having said that?
How he can claim his site is objective when he allows this prick a pulpit to spew his anti-Wing babble is beyond me.
I’d like to give these Detroit fans some helpful advice: Just be jerks. Unabashed ones at that. You’re like 90 percent of the way there. The hockey community already thinks very little of you anyway, so why not earn it?
Who the hell am I to blast anyone for being biased? I’m the most biased blogger I know. Yep, and I make no bones about that. I don’t like the league. I like the Wings. I’m not an “NHL fan”, only a Wing fanatic. I like Wing fans. I don’t like many fans of other teams. I believe the Wings are the greatest franchise in all of sport and if you want to argue with me I’ll insult you in public because I’m narrow-minded and trivial like that.
But you know that and I make no claims otherwise. Puck Daddy? Greg, isn’t there supposed to be at least a cloke cloak of objectivity? No? I mean, if I’m wrong…say so.
I have no problem with people hating the Wings, the 19 or me. We revel in it. We bathe in your hatred. But don’t hide behind something you’re not. Don’t pretend to be “neutral” then devote that much time, that consistently to jealously despising one team in particular.
Maybe Greg’s in a tough spot. Maybe he vouched for this barely literate bitter Flame fan and now finds himself in a position where he can’t get rid of him. A quandary I’m sure. A leadership challenge, perhaps.
And yes, I realize half the reason he writes what he does is for the hits he gets from Wing fans. Noted. But, is there ever a time when hits take a back seat to some sort of integrity? Oh, I know. I’ve called this guy “barely literate” and a “prick” and I stand by that. He’s truly a peckerhead. But Wyshynski isn’t, unless of course you choose to judge him soley by who he allows to write for his web site.
And far be it from us to do that.
——-
Just received an email from Greg Wyshynski and I believe it has merit so I’m going to discuss it. I’m not going to post the email because I think that if he wanted it to be public, he would have put it in the comment section.
Do I feel Puck Daddy itself, as a site, is biased? No. The author of the post we referenced above most definitely is. In fact, he’s got a bone to pick with the Wings and Wing fans and he’s used his access to the Puck Daddy audience to vent that.
Greg made a very good point with this line in his email….“You disagree with one of my writers. You think he’s a hack. That’s fine. But did I miss your post claiming Paul Kukla has a crisis of leadership because he has (a KK blog) writing for him? Or is that hand too close to the feed bag?”
I took out the title of the blog because I don’t think Greg would want me to put it out there like that.
It’s a good point. A valid point taken onboard. Hypocritical on my part? I don’t think so. Narrow minded? Maybe. Bottom line is this: Puck Daddy itself is not biased. I’ve never felt that, nor have I claimed it here (despite the title of this post). Two Line Pass, who writes for Puck Daddy? He’s a biased, slanted, Wing hater who has formed many of his posts around that very premise.
Objectivity is a tough thing, so tough that I don’t even attempt it. And there have been times I could have. Those who do it well, and I count Wyshynski in that group, deserve credit for doing so. Conversely, those who claim to be objective then make use of a public forum to prove the opposite? Not so much.

Um…the hockey community? You mean the blogger community that probably comprises about 5% of the hockey community in total. When you say hockey community, you’re talking about every player, coach, management, staff, mother, father, sister, brother, and anyone who is involved in the game or is a fan of it. And you’re hockey community, probably still thinks pretty highly of Wings fans…you know, the ones that actually go to the games, not just read your blog.
Just ask that guy who tried a sting operation in at an LA Kings game, only to come away with more respect…oh wait, that would include some actual research…nevermind, that’s too much work.

I tend to think most hockey fans are rational people that don’t throw a single blanket of judgement over an entire fanbase, since, you know, that would seem bigoted. But what do I know.

Chief, there is an inherent problem with this blog post, more than a simple typo. You tried to use Wyshynski and objectivity in the same sentence. This is English language equivalent of dividing by zero; it does not compute.

Honestly? I don’t give a rat’s ass what the “hockey community” thinks. As a friend of mine once said in reference to Duke basketball: “Everyone hates a winner.”

And, of course, because all members of “the hockey community” think the same way. Like all women. Or all Hispanic people. Because they are intellectual Stepford clones.

Spot on calling out Greg on that one. Reality is that the Wings are the model franchise that alot of fans may “hate” because their team cannot consistently beat the Wings. Any hockey fan worth his salt respects the organization for its excellence, superiority and perpetuity.
Jealous owners and GMs may bash Detroit, yet they’ll stay close like pilot fish to a shark hoping to grab whatever scraps (players) the Red Wings may cast off or not be able to swallow (cap space) hoping to get a piece of that winning tradition that is Holland and Illitch, Inc.
Most any hockey player would take a pay cut for a ride on the Red Wing magic bus as well and a chance at glory and a piece of history.
And as a lifelong and proud Boston Bruins fan, I am glad I have the luxury to admire the Wings from the relative calm of the Eastern Conference and not as a conference rival!

Is there some way that I can read kuklaskorner without your posts showing up? Every time I click on this goddamn website I see some teary, bitchy screed from you about somebody hating the red wings. Are you constantly on your period? I honestly would never normally say this, but you are taking hockey too seriously. Go outside and enjoy the summer. Oh wait, you live in detroit. I assume they don’t have sunlight or happiness there.

Yet again—I’m supposed to CARE what complete strangers on the net, and anonymous bloggers who go by pseudonyms, think about me? The only opinions of anyone online that I listen to are the 19. Anyone else? I just wonder why they’re not following their own team.
It IS a travesty that Wysh claims ‘objectivity’ and then allows bias into the fold, but hell…that’s what the MSM tells me blogger standards are. Maybe they’ve actually got something right.

I find it really hilarious that the Pens beating the Wings is bringing out all the sore winners.
Who the hell is a sore winner? Honestly? To Pens fans—your team won! Congrats! Enjoy that, and focus less on insulting Detroit. To Wing haters—if you’re not a Pens fan, our team was still better than yours this year! And last year! And probably the year before that! And definitely in ‘02, ‘98, and ‘97.

Best fans in the league there in chokeytown. As evidenced by all of those empty seats down low during a SC Final game 7, I guess?
Posted by rwhater on 06/15/09 at 12:27 PM ET
There’s an easy way to avoid the aggravation of having to read TLP’s posts and it’s the same advice Animal Drew gave out: don’t read it. TLP doesn’t pretend to be objective and despite Wyshynski’s best efforts he catches crap from every fanbase for being biased against them especially Penguins fans (weird, I know).
I wish more people would love their team as passionately as us, it could lead to hockey becoming popular again instead of us having to carry this whole damn league.
It certainly is refreshing how you guys focus solely on loving your team and the organ-I-zation and never hate anyone else in the league…It’s the nature of the beast. The Wings are still the model franchise. People are going to hate you. Just get used to it.

Chief—It’s called a column. It’s one man’s opinion on things. You know, just like this post is your opinion on things. Lighten up. You’re just mad that A) the Wings lost and B) that someone bashed the Wings fans (and in a way you). Don’t start throwing the objectivity thing out, its silly. Two-Line pass is an EDITORIAL COLUMN.
Posted by Joe from Missouri on 06/15/09 at 12:58 PM ET
What gets me is this:
1.) You claim not to give a crap when people hate on you and proceed to get all riled up when someone hates on you.
2.) You’re getting this worked up over something said in a guest commentary. Not by Wysh himself, but by someone else. Besides, it’s just a friggin’ blog!
3.) The original post and the resulting comments are pretty much proving Two Line Pass’s point about y’all being tools.
I never really had anything against Wings fans before, but geez, maybe I oughta start.

I’m perplexed. I really thought that if the Penguins won the Cup, the media would be bursting at the seams with happiness. Just totally incapable of doing anything with itself other than singing the praises of the team that, off the record, we all know it was really cheering for, if only because it made for a better “storyline” than a repeat by the Wings.
And for the most part, that’s been true. But the hate for the Wings and their fans that seems to have bubbled to the surface on occasion has been truly remarkable. We all suspected as much, but now it really does appear that many have been waiting for an opportunity to dance on our grave—jab a finger at us and our team, gleefully declare that we lost, and ask us how we like it.
Well, the Wings are still a dominant team, and we have a truckload of President’s Trophies as well as a fistful of Stanley Cups in recent memory to prove it… So yeah, we’ll make it, I feel just fine this morning actually, but thanks for asking.
But I guess that’s the problem.
