About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site.”
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”

Can You Watch It Yet?

It’s been twenty days.

Long enough?

This morning was the first time I could bring myself to watch this.  And despite all that followed it in the coming days?

It still hurts more than a little.

I don’t think I’m being greedy or ungrateful when I say that still makes me want to throw up in my mouth a little.

I’m going back on vacation.

even now, when i know they have already won the Cup, i still get that terrible feeling in my stomach. I live in NH now, but I flew out to Detroit for that game and got my hands on a ticket and had to physically watch maxime “girls name” talbot put that in. Ugh, that’s the only part of this season that i really need to forget but never will.

Posted by ckittle  on  06/22  at  10:58 AM

I guess not.  I refuse to hit the play button.

Posted by RWBill  on  06/22  at  11:19 AM

I watched it the other day.  Yep, still sucks.

Then I watched Game 6 again, and everything was better…

Posted by mudshark from Divetown, Colorado  on  06/22  at  11:22 AM

Not inside USA, so I can’t watch.

But I know what’s about. Hurts in the sense that would be one of the greatest victory of all time for our religion. 0-2 to 3-2. The brutal domination on third period… class. Hockey class. And…

But we ruin their party twice, so, I can live with that.

DALE WINGS CARAJO. Dive fans a LCDTM!

Lets just say that it doesn’t hurt one bit.
You see, I have a big Stanley Cup Band-Aid that made the Boo-Boo all better!

“BRING IT ON!”
“AGAIN!”

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Posted by Kate from Pa.  on  06/22  at  12:22 PM

No.

I refuse to acknowledge the reality of the existence of that game.

Give me another couple of months, when I’m looking forward to training camp, and maybe then I’ll be ready.  Still too soon.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  06/22  at  12:39 PM

we want the cup! we want the cup!  we want oh noooo!
I was stunned but my son and I started jumping up and down.
You see I love the Pens!
Two days later the dream was over.
Yes I have watched this several times it is what I have left until TC starts again
This is what sport is all about the sorrow with the sweet and what will mean so much if and when the Guins win the cup!
Wing fans enjoy it this summer.  I have not enjoyed summer like this since 92

Thanks for visiting Denny, but I can tell you the euphoria of The Ultimate Sports Trophy has not gone away yet.  Congrats on getting to the SCF and getting 2 wins, Lord knows the NHL was really trying to avoid a 4-1 blitz.

Unfortunately getting to the Finals again and presuming an undeniability about winning the Cup is dangerous.  It’s not called the most difficult trophy without reason.  Injuries, hot opposing goalies, bounces, the whim of the referees all add up to make this an inexact science.  We treasure this one knowing full well we were screwed by the refs in Game 5 vs Anaheim last year in the final 2 minutes or we might be toasting back to back Stanleys.

Posted by RWBill  on  06/22  at  01:40 PM

I can’t do it. Just can’t find the will to hit the “play” button. Nope, nope, not going to do it.

Posted by Alan from Atlanta, GA, USA  on  06/22  at  02:10 PM

so many ifs.  IF Zetterberg gets the puck deep instead of turning it over at center ice.  IF Osgood keeps the post covered.  IF the puck gets clears instead of sent to the half boards.  IF IF IF.

oh well, they still won - but I think Detroit’s fans deserved to see it at home, that night, that way.

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach  on  06/22  at  02:32 PM

Honestly, even after the game was over (and I’m 100% sure this was shock and some serious self preservation) I had to admit, that, objectively, that was one of the, if not the, most exciting hockey games I’d ever seen. As long as we had a series lead I wasn’t going to let myself get too stressed out. The same philosophy kept me from developing an ulcer during the Dallas series as well.

And two days later all was right with the world. I’m sitting here surrounded by 2008 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings merchandise, and I’m filled with this strange almost zen-like feeling.

Now, had I made the trek to Detroit and paid $500 for a ticket? That’d be a different story.

I wonder how history is going to remember this Stanley Cup Finals. I suspect it could end up like the 1975 World Series between Boston and Cincinnati. What lingers is Carlton Fisk’s 12 inning home run in game six, and not the Reds taking the series in game seven.

Not that I’m bitter about that. How could I be, really? I was negative years old when it happened.

Posted by Modnar from Cincinnati, OH  on  06/22  at  02:54 PM

Nevermind. I take it back. I went to hit play, and I didn’t make it past ten seconds. I’m sure I could watch it, but I don’t have any desire to whatsoever.

It’d be a good game to subject someone to if you’re trying to explain how exciting playoff hockey could be, but I’d have to leave the room for that final minute of regulation.

Posted by Modnar from Cincinnati, OH  on  06/22  at  02:56 PM

Yeah, I’ve seen parts of it.  It was amazing hockey with a horrific ending if you’re a Wings fan.  It made those of us who aren’t in the dressing room, with Nicklas Lidstrom and Mike Babcock’s steely resolves reminding anybody whose faith wavered that, “Oh well, we lost, it’s a new day and we’ve got to prepare for Game 6, let’s go,” sweat, but…

Whatever emotional gulf between the fans and the players that was created by the fact that the Wings won in Pittsburgh was closed on that impossibly hot day that the players paraded down Woodward, telling the fans how much they meant, and how the Cup win was for them.  It was a love-in in every positive sense of the term, and that was the day that it truly sunk in that the Wings won the Cup.

I wouldn’t trade being down there for the world.  It was unbelievable.  Meeting Stanley himself while he was in the hands of Red Wings players, and taking a swig or two, those experiences were just the icing on one hell of a cake.

Posted by George James Malik from South Lyon, MI  on  06/22  at  03:18 PM

Really now, who the hell cares?  We’ve got our hands on the Cup and they’ve got their hands on a worrisome future, given their free agent situations and the cap.  They’ll look a lot different next year, and we’ll look like, well, like Stanley Cup champions.

Torture yourselves if it makes you happy.  Me, I’m already happy.

Posted by Chris from DC  on  06/22  at  04:08 PM

The only thing I had on replay after that game was Babs’ press conference, listening to and reading every ounce of positivity he exuded.

I need another presser right now, because free agency looms and Stuey better sign and Lilja better leave…

I can watch it because I know how it all ends.  Having your heart ripped out and stomped on comes with the territory of being emotionally invested in the outcome of sporting events, and I can handle character-building gut wrenching moments as long as everything works out ok in the end.

But I still avert my eyes and and cover my ears and say “LALALALALA” whenever some *#$%@& network shows the clip of that *#$%@& Larry Bird stealing the ball from Isiah in ‘87.

Maybe if you hadn’t planned a parade prematurely the Wings could’ve won on home ice.  Karma always cashes in.  GO Pens!

Indeed. That’s why we won.

Guys, it was a great hockey game.  We lost, but WE WON THE STANLEY CUP a few days later.  That’s the important part.  It’s not my favorite thing to watch, but no sweat, we won the next game.  If we had lost the series, then I wouldn’t even be looking at this blog or any other hockey-related website of television broadcast until next year’s playoffs.  HOWEVER, we won the Cup so it’s okay.

Posted by TDeters  on  06/22  at  06:32 PM

This is an especially boneheaded reply.  You sure you want to stick to those guns, ace?

Posted by HockeyJoe from NY  on  06/22  at  07:00 PM

You’d have to be a masochist beyond what even I could ever be to watch this again. It doesn’t matter what comes after. This moment, this game, was its own particular brand of tragic pain.

Posted by Phoebe  on  06/22  at  07:20 PM

You earn your karma, and then you’ve got to do something with it.  Maybe it had to do with the Wings’ distractions, and maybe it had to do with the fact that the series was incredibly tightly-contested as, you know, the two teams were the best in the NHL after a hundred-plus games and were battling for that Stanley Cup thing.

Winning the Cup takes winning a couple of games that you’re not “supposed” to win, and bouncing back from more than a few crushing defeats with steely resolve.

That’s what this one was.  You’ve got to deal with a few crushing defeats, and sometimes they come right when you’re ready to let it all hang out and celebrate.  The Wings dealt with it, and that’s why they get to party with the Cup in between their workouts this summer.

Posted by George James Malik from South Lyon, MI  on  06/22  at  07:31 PM

I’ve already watched this game three times. This shit happens people, that’s part of what makes this the greatest game and leaves open the window that anyone can win. It’s how it works.

then we won.

hey dumbass, you do know the Penguins were planning their parade before the series was over, too, right?  why?  because it takes more than a day and a half to plan something like that.  idiot.

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach  on  06/22  at  08:18 PM

They had to put in a little bit of contingency planning.  After all, the city had to determine if they could use the same route they did for the other three parades!  smile

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  06/22  at  09:46 PM

Curious as to why some people tend to be dwelling on the that horrific night?  It’s like a bad dream, ex-wife and watching Pink Floyd’s The Wall while sober.  Shit that has happened that ya don’t want to relive.  Just sayin…

Any around town Stanley sightings?

Sort of… at 0230 this morning (6/22) I am sitting on Jefferson St, just two blocks from The Joe. Street was quiet and only a couple trucks waiting for their unload time at the U.S. Post Office when I hear the roar of a monstrous V-8 from down the road.  Headlights. About 4 feet off the ground. “WTF?” I think to myself as I watched the vehicle round the curve off of M10 onto Jefferson.  Music blarin, V-8 big block rumbling and the hum of the giant mudder tires filled the air as this vehicle got closer.  It was a limo, on what had to be 44 inch tires and a brush guard that would stop a train.  It was white with Redwing stuff all over it. cool. A backyard replica of the Cup towered out of where the trunk would have normally been.  My initial thoughts were, “Holy shit it’s Bubba transplanted then conformed!” It was pretty cool.

To paraphrase Old Will: The world is a little dimmer today as a great light has passed. sick

Carlin was hilarious in his early days, but for the last decade he has been far from funny.  he turned into a bitter old man ranting and raving on stage.

Oh heck it doesn’t bother me.  just reminds me how tenacious and mentally tough this team is.  How many teams would have choked from that point on? many, but not our Wings. They finished business and brought home the cup!

My Masochistic baby went and left me
My Masochistic baby went and left me
My Masochistic baby went and left me

And Stanley came around in El Bebe Masoquista’s stead, along with a few cases of Labatt, for future considerations.  I’ll take that trade.

I deleted it off my TiVo without watching it again.  Yes, it was a great hockey game and yes we did win it all a few days later but I still hadn’t recovered from the heartbreak of that Game 5.  I know, I’m weird.  I guess if I were still in Michigan and able to join in the celebrations that would have helped.  Not sure.  However, I still have Game 4 against the Dive and Game 6 of the SCF on my TiVo and those I have no problem watching.  smile

the tragic pain, the love and admiration for Lord stanley’s cup. what the fans go through after a game five.  This whole thread reminds me of this song.LOL

It’s been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing ...
I said nothing can take away these blues,
‘Cause nothing compares ...
Nothing compares to you

It’s been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong?
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they’d only remind me of you
went to the doctor guess what he told me
Guess what he told me?
He said, girl, you better have fun
No matter what you do
But he’s a fool ...
‘Cause nothing compares ...
Nothing compares to you ...

All the flowers that you planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
I know that living with you baby was sometimes hard
But I’m willing to give it another try
‘Cause nothing compares ...
Nothing compares to you

lord Stanley, nothing and I mean nothing you silver hunk of hardware.hehehe

Glad it’s back where it really belongs and on an original six team to boot!!!! Detroit baby!!!!!

Re-Reading “The Game” by some goalie that used to play with Montreal. Some good stuff in there.  Lot’s of parallels to the Wings of today.

Game 5 made them stronger.  Nothing more, nothing less.

The Cup was at Teddy Griffin’s Roadhouse over the weekend.  That’s cool.  (Hat Tip to George J for the link)

Summer of Stanley.....

I’m going to make some <s>crazy</s>, I mean wonderful girl a lovely wife raspberry I’ve always said that if you can’t go from discussing the meaning of life to Beavis and Butthead jokes and back within the span of a sentence or three, you’re probably not my type LOL

Stanley is everybody’s type, and that’s why Game 6 was endurable.

Posted by George James Malik from South Lyon, MI  on  06/23  at  11:39 PM

I watched it. I didn’t want to. I convinced myself not to, knowing it would be too painful. I got half way through the comments and then decided I could handle it. We’ve got the Cup, right? What else matters, right? It’s true, we won the Cup. But watching it is painful because it brings me back to a time before everything was okay. My heart started beating as fast as it was that night. The red light crushed me as it did that night (though not to that extent). It’s still painful, and I regret watching it.
But you know what’s great? I was watching something on FSN the other night, and they had a crawl bar at the bottom giving other sports news. The draft happened to be the day before, and they were listing who each team picked. When it got to Detroit, it didn’t just say ‘Detroit’ or the ‘Red Wings’. It said ‘2008 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings.’ Just makes you feel warm and tingly all over, doesn’t it?

Posted by Megan from GR Michigan  on  06/24  at  04:31 PM

Game 5 is irrelevant. It was one hell of a game, but it’s irrelevant. As is game 6.

Am I opposed to watching replays of any of it? No, but nor will I go out of my way to do so. I’ll see it all in flashback form next season.

The Cup is in Detroit. Nothing else matters.

Imagine watching the game live @ The Joe and being this close to witnessing the cup celebration on home ice.  Now that must have been a bit harder then watching the game on tv. Even though I knew they would bounce back.

Great teams find a way to win, end of story. End of Pittsburgh.

I use to think we needed a John madden type on our team. But with the emergence of Franzen he’s much better then Madden.  I really think Franzen could be selke material. I said that a couple of years ago and people thought I was nuts.

Off to watch the Tigers.

Anyone wonder if Kronwall will be as good of an open ice hitter as konstantinov was? vladdy was an artist at open ice hitting.  Anyone can throw a check in the corner and along the boards but the art of a good open ice hit is awesome. I remember when Vladdy nailed Dale Hawerdchuk in the Philly finals years ago. sweet open ice hit. Smoked poor Dale.

Mike Peca use to be a real good open ice hitter proving you don’t have to be big.  just timing and no fear.

Actually, I’m getting over it pretty quickly - how else could I respond when told “you’re a great woman, and have so many special qualities, and I have a lot of fun with you, but the problem is you are so intelligent that you make me feel emasculated around my friends...so I think we’d be better off not seeing each other.”

At least he had the decency to call it off face-to-face.  I can respect that.

It’s just a bummer when you meet someone sweet and they tell you essentially they like their women smart enough to have a conversation with, but not smart enough to make them feel like less of a man.

gotta respect the guy for being honest breaking up with a compliment to you though. i usually take the low road. “you’re crazy” and “you lack most of the qualities i look for in a human being” make it much easier to distance myself from the situation. but for my part, i also believe those were honest…

Posted by rwingscup19 from Dallas  on  06/25  at  10:58 AM

didn’t mean for that to sound like you deserved to be broken up with. from everything i’ve seen, your intelligent, well thought out comments on this blog (and your wings allegiance, naturally) lead me to believe you are quite the catch, as opposed to the girls i see around dallas that know more about the dynamics of a spray tan booth and “the hills” than they do about world politics and social injustice

Posted by rwingscup19 from Dallas  on  06/25  at  11:09 AM

I’ve often thought that intelligence is a prerequisite, and that, arguably speaking, dating someone “smarter than me” would not be a bad thing, but that’s just some weird guy talking…

Stuff happens.  That’s life.  The only way to avoid getting hurt is never meeting anyone - and I’m claustrophobic, so I have to get out sometimes.  smile

Baroque- your name is it music or art oriented? Or am I know where near it?

I’m a complete sucker for Antonio Vivaldi.

interesting place for sympathy, but can I get in on it too?  I’m newly single, after an almost year-long relationship where we spent a ton of time together.  it ended badly, and I’m having a very hard time getting over it.

I’ll have to checkout some of Vivaldi.  I’m a Samuel Barber, Claude Debussy and Michael Nyman fan. A Jazz Freak and much more.

Intelligence is sexy, along with a sense of humor, killer smile and Red Wing addict.

Past relationships, you don’t want to know.  Important part is to let go of it. No fun being bitter. It takes time, that ugly four letter word. grin If I am anything it is resilient.

As long as she didn’t go after you with a knife, it didn’t end as badly as the relationship of one of my friends - as as long as she didn’t leave you bankrupt, it didn’t end as badly as one of mine.

I wonder if this is a reflection of how boring the Wings offseason is so far.

No new coaches.
No “immediate saviour” draft picks.
No new owners.
No owners committing felonies.
No major stars contemplating retirement (Sakic and Niedermayer, part II).
No major UFAs (e.g. Hossa) expected to jump ship.
No major housecleaning, as is happening in Toronto.

Just where the Stanley Cup is going to be next.  Dullsville.  smile

George commented on the chara size stick. Brings me to this thought.  Since both charra and Redden left ottawa neither have been as good alone as they were together. Lidstrom can make anyone paired with him look good. However Redden and Chara lack that ability.

I still shake my head at the five game suspension Fedorov received when his stick hit Chara’s helmet when chara was an Islander playing against the Wings. what a joke.

Yo-Yo Ma also did an album of baroque cello pieces by J.S. Bach (Simply Baroque).

And for something different, if you can stand classical at all, give Turlough O’Carolan a shot.  He was a blind Irish harpist from the 17th and 18th centuries, and I’ve found that even people who don’t normally like Celtic music but do like classical music find his pieces appealing.

And for something completely different, there is always Cajun or Zydeco music, like the group Beausoleil.  I especially love listening to that in February when it gets dark at what seems like 2:00 in the afternoon.

Some Ottawa fans have wondered if the Senators kept the wrong defenseman when they made a choice between Redden and Chara.

Sounds like you think the best choice would have been to keep both (although not possible financially) because they don’t have the same ability to “elevate the game” of their partner - although Chara might be better at that because of the altitude.

I do think it’s cool that he is climbing Kilimanjaro for charity this summer, though.

Somewhat of an understatement....

I hope it is not an indication of next season.

I am thinking of posting some Alexander Pope, or Ben Stein on HTT.

Man.  I check in here and a lot’s happened since I last poked my head around.

Baroque, nothing but a crying shame about the breakup.  For what it’s worth, it’s his mistake, the jackanape.  And if he can’t address you with regional terms of endearment, then he doesn’t deserve you.  Am I right, a chuisle?

“Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Romania.”

Gotta love the Dorothy Parker.  Now SHE had a realistic view of romance.

(And I WISH I could meet a woman who could talk down to me.  Never have, but hasn’t stopped me from dating them.  I don’t want to brag, but trust me, a MENSA-level IQ isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.)

And I thought you were referencing the Neal Stephenson books.  Always was more of an Elgar man myself, but partial to a bit of Handel in the right mood.  That’s not to say I’m not nearly as highbrow as it looks, my tastes generally run more plebian than that.  As long as we’re discussing music and art, Townes Van Zandt, Kurt Weill, Henri Matisse, and Der Blaue Reiter were gods among men.  And I’ll fight anyone who says differently.

I do like Turlough O’Carolan, even if he’s not venerated as he should be in his native land.  Try some of his music done on a hammer dulcimer instead of a harp (see McCutcheon, John).

...Aaaaaaand that’s the Chief back.

Paul, you have my sympathies too, but I’m much more comfortable at lending a shoulder to cry on to women than men.

Just don’t knock bitterness, or I’ll dredge up what I said last time about it.

So.  The week between the draft and the start of free agency.  The time is as long as the sunshine, and about as yawn-inducing.  And am I the only one hoping that the revelations about Brad Stuart’s shoulder will knock his price down significantly?

I think I’ll go watch paint dry while waiting for the Tigers’ march up the standings.  Friggin’ Twinks.

Once again, Gramps, the only thing I find I agree with you on is uisce beatha.

Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from my desk, with the acid pen  on  06/25  at  02:20 PM

I would have kept Chara because of what you mentioned and Redden has had his injury issues over the years. Redden is more offensive but more soft as well.

If I was Ottawa I wouldn’t let him climb. Protecting an asset just like Big Ben and his motor cycle incident. Not to mention Harleys with hockey players.

Matisse must have been a Wings fan when he painted The Dinner table ( HARMONY IN RED) tongue wink

I’m certain Dali, Wood, Mondrain, Wyeth and Munch were as well.  LOL

Scouting, unreal how important is is even throughout the season as our scouts break down teams tendancies and top players. It’s as important as salary cap issues, and overall depth. Without scouting there is no depth unless your a free agent king but that gets a team a third of the way. Home grown talent!!! Hidden gems!

You must forgive my spelling errors. one of my major weaknesses in life. RED marshmellows and older men are the others.  SEE I get hockey comments in every sentence, well just about! tongue rolleye

It will be fun watching other teams overpay for players they think will help them chase after our cup.

“No. 30, Detroit Red Wings: Some nameless, faceless Euro who will not be on anyone’s list and with a bio you couldn’t find if you had both hands on his stats. Likely will evolve into a Selke or Norris Trophy candidate. Damned if we know his name.”

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the genius that is Jim Kelley.

I’m certain Dali, Wood, Mondrain, Wyeth and Munch were as well.

Dali wasn’t a fan of anything or anyone.  He hated pretty much everything he came across except Gala.  A real sociopath.

Don’t forget The Red Studio.  Another vibrant work, just like a certain team in red.

older men are the others

Older women, mine, so yeah, you’re forgiven.

Anyone thinking about buying a 2008 Stanley cup replica ring from the wings organization?  I bought one in 1997 and have never regretted it. Not as expensive as the real thing obviously but it’s really nice. It is along the same line as the real design. Mine has the ruby red stone with a gold winged wheel on it. With Detroit red Wings stanley cup champions around the outside of the stone. has my name on one side and the cup on the other. Not bad for $350. But no ring this year. Too poor and one is enough.

My admiration is because he was an existentialist before there was Existentialism.

Wow, what an odd hockey off-season...I got my championship t-shirt the other day and am having fun wearing it around these parts.

I like Haydn, Vivaldim, Telleman, Beethoven, Chopin and then we go from there (all the way up to U2 and various heavy metal bands).  I’m off to see Rush tonight at Red Rocks which is one of the best concert venues in the world!

Baroque, I’m sorry.  :( His loss!

Only if he plays for the Wings. Freakin Mathais(sp?) and Green.

Take that Soren Kierkegaard.

Fear and Trembling remains one of my favorite books of thought; it’s been a useful way to think beyond Hegelian ethics.

but that doesn’t mean I won’t call her a di*&head;during an argument…

Best part of dating brilliant women! Making low brow jokes they LOL at but don’t know exactly how to respond to; definitely, among my favorite pass times in the world.

I dabble in electronic music and usually mix bassy, slightly distorted synth lines with layered string patterns. Oddly, disco has some of the most complicated string patterns, aside from classical.

The panacea for breakups: alcohol (or choclate for ya B), friends, trash talking, exercise and/or angry sex with a new one. kiss

Wings Win the frigging Stanley Cup—for petes sake!  And all you bitches are acting like you are deparately trying to find something to whine about!!  Masochist’s, all you bitches are masochists!

Actually, Kilimanjaro is one mountain that can be ascended without special equipment - it’s just a really, really, REALLY difficult hike, with much opportunity for altitude sickness.  That’s why it is a mountain that is climbed a lot as an adventure - no pitons or ropes required.

Here’s something obscure - a group called Yat-Kha (the CD I have is entitled dalai beldiri) - they are Tuvan throat-singers and musicians.  That group I actually heard live at an arts festival when I was in the Baltimore area.

That clown joke was great.  smile

Kay, according to St. James, Chelios is likely to return, Holland won’t reiterate his “slightly less than $3.5 million” a year offer to Stuart until he tells the Wings’ trainers what’s wrong with his shoulder (Stuart is seeing a specialist today), McCarty and Downey will probably be offered contracts, though at least one will have to accept a two-way deal...Kulfan says that as Lilja likes living in Novi and knows that being a 6/7 guy in Detroit is way better than being a 3/4 guy in, say, Miami, he’ll sign a one or two-year deal, but Khan says that Drake has yet to decide whether he’s going to retire, the Wings want to give Derek Meech, who was named the team’s rookie of the year on Wednesday, more playing time, he’ll probably match any offer for Valtteri Filppula if somebody tosses him a RFA offer sheet, Kenny’s probably going to wait until the market settles down to see if he can find a veteran goaltender who’s willing to back up Osgood for less than the $1.7 million Osgood’s earning (probably a lot less), and yes, the Wings are looking for a second-line forward.

There’s also a gear sale at the Joe on Saturday, prospect camp will take place between the seventh and eleventh or sixth and twelfth of July, depending on who you believe, and the Wings apparently just signed Sergei Kolsov/Sirhei Kolasau (Belorussian =/= Cyrillic) to a two-year deal.

I keep on playin our favorite song.
I turn it up while you’re gone.
It’s all I’ve got when you’re in my head,

Of all the people to be smart about his career it has to be that tool. yay.

Some other philosophical notes: I went to see “The Love Guru” with my cousin for his birthday and it was gawd awful. I know “SHOCKA” ...but seriously, it was torturous. There were three redeeming things though. 1) Some of the “zoomed out” hockey sequences were cool; fancy stick work that you could actually see a player like Crosby pull off. 2) Jessica Alba  3) Pretty good about pointing out the cliches of quasi-spiritual, self-help garbage.

4) Stephen Colbert playing a drugged out announcer!

I think I smiled a few times.

You know it, Gramps.  Just keeping the Irish (Gaelic) thing going.  Your comments about Kierkegaard made me laugh out loud, though.  Keep up the good work.

That’s why it is a mountain that is climbed a lot as an adventure - no pitons or ropes required.

It’s one of those little intrigues of mountaineering that on just about every continent, the highest peak is far easier to ascend than the second-highest.  The most obvious relationship is Mt. Everest vs. K2, but this holds true in Africa, where Kilimanjaro is a broad volcanic shield, and Mt. Kenya is a jagged crest of naked rock.  Seven Summits vs. Second Summits strikes again.

If memory serves me correctly she also said

It does serve you correctly.  Of course, for those whose hearts are aching she had these words:

RESUME

Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.

Oh, and here’s your fun hockey-related thought for the day.  George Friedrich Handel and Jimi Hendrix were next-door neighbors, three centuries apart.  The places where they lived in London, both bearing plaques, are one of the strangest historical juxtapositions out there.  And it’s barely a stone’s throw from the shop where Lord Stanley bought The Cup.

Handel, Hendrix, and The Cup.  Makes ya think…
