At some point today, maybe…if time and certain mental issues permit…I think we should discuss how more than a decade of worrying about playoff goaltending has affected us all. Like 34.7 (and sooner or later I have a theory I’d like to share with you about that), I think Chevaldae, Vernon, Osgood, Hasek, Joseph, Hasek, Legace, Hasek and Osgood have caused a community-wide emotional deterioration.
But now is not the time.
Now is not the time to ask me to string multiples together. I can’t. All I have right now are short bursts of insanity. I’ll share them with you because you care.
—If Niklas Kronwall were to lay somebody out tonite, someone with a Spanish name, and I mean lay the frigging wood to him? That would be awesome. “Rafi” is a bitch name anyway. I mean, I wouldn’t say that to his face probably, but it still is. Anway, Jr.? First ten minutes for that please.
—So. Will we see Jason Williams on the point during a BJ power play tonite? I’m thinking not. But we really had some fun with that for a while in Hockeytown didn’t we?
—DC 101’s Elliot in the Morning is a big Caps fan. But he’s kidding himself when he says this, “Theodore’s fine. I’m not worried about him at all.” Our boy 3 or 4 gave up the latter on less than twenty shots last night. And it’s not even the second round yet.
Take note of this Wing fans, or hockey fans in general. An edict from Voox, our bartender.
“Stress, paranoia, and animal sacrifices are on the rise, the playoffs have arrived for Wings fans.
As it is the post season, I need your help to spread the word about the 2nd Annual Douche Canoe ticket contest.
If anyone can get a sign on TV behind Pierre McGuire’s head with his name “Pierre” or “McGuire” and the words “Douche Canoe” on the sign during the playoffs, they will win two free Leafs tickets to a game next season.
People interested in winning the tickets should email me on advance to let me know of their attempt and to provide details of what their sign looks like.
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) will be the official contest email.”
—I’ve seen nothing on the status of Marian Hossa’s groin injury. I mean, I know he’s “recovering.” But has anyone seen something more than that? Is that important? I guess not.
—If the Wings win 12, Pavel Datsyuk is your Conn Smythe winner. And that starts tonite. It’s what we need and it’s who we need to lead this team right now.
—Naturally, we’re doing a Live Blog tonite. And I’ll tell you right now that nothing makes me feel warmer than “Night Moves.” So I’m starting with that. I have a good feeling about it. Do you remember the Game 1, Round 1 LB from last year? Probably not, only 161 comments…and a lot of them included exclamation points. Interesting. For the sake of reference? 1025 comments for Game 6 on June 4th.
This made me happy this morning. I thought I’d share. Be back later with some keys to a Game 1 victory.

There once was a goalie named Chris
Who heard boos for every puck that he missed
But while spouting invective
Fans often neglected
To note the two cups he had kissed
It starts now, y’all! Can’t tell you how excited, and absolutely wracked with nerves, I am this morning. I was out until 4 am, woke up at 9 am and started fretting about the f—kin wings ... must be the playoffs.

I think we were all too nervous to LB for game one, round one. I know I’ll be twice as nervous this year.
In regards to the Navy, that whole situation blows my mind. First of all, it takes some serious stones to even attempt those shots, for multiple reasons. The difficult of the shot, the stakes regarding the hostages life if you miss, etc. Just total heroics. And second of all, from a technical standpoint, the fact that three shots, three hits, like the graphic says, at sea, from the back of a destroyer, shooting a wobbly moving target, through a tiny window at night? Un-frickin’-believable. That’s skill at it’s finest.

so uh anybody else going to watch their Wings DVDs today of the 1997 Cup run? I will be.
Might even try to make the girlfriend watch it to give her some context for what is about to happen the next two months. she paid a little attention last year (hard not to when I’m screaming at the TV, and watching the games on my laptop from the campsite). this year I’m going to try to fully indoctrinate her.

I’ve seen nothing on the status of Marian Hossa’s groin injury. I mean, I know he’s “recovering.”
I’ve got zero worries on that. I think the only reason they sat him was because they weren’t playing for anything for the last couple games, so they let him rest for precautionary reasons. I’m sure we would’ve heard something, ANYTHING on it if there was any issue…
Posted by Garth on 04/16/09 at 09:14 AM ET
Hats off to the USN & Seals. The fact they rescued a fellow Vermonter (even if I live in MO now, I’m still a Vermonter damnit) make it even cooler to me. The best part of this was the message sent to the so called “pirates”. The price paid for piracy has always been one of death, except we don’t leave them hanging from the gallows at the entrance to the port in which they were caught and subsequently hung.
No video strolls down memory lane for me today. Focus on the present & task at hand….and day rife full of clock watching.

ahhh great, my favorite time of the year. the one where after paying for nhl gamecenter all year to try to follow games as i don’t have a television, comes to a screeching halt because there’s really no way to watch playoff games online anyone. correct? thanks NHL.

Hmm, I think the Caps are pretty worried about goalies today. Typical Jose Threeorfour last night.
Me, I’m just waiting for work to be over. I’ll be on a bit of a DVR delay thanks to my daughter’s orthodontist appointment but I hope to catch up by the 2nd period.
First ten minutes, please don’t let Columbus score.

I’ve been up since 4 morning. Watched a bit of games 4 and 5 of last year’s SCF, which are still on my DVR, then popped in the VHS with games 3 and 4 of 02. Barely said goodbye to the spouse. Almost forgot to feed the dog. Am checking A2Y, Snapshots, and the other usual suspects rather than working on a Very Important Project at my MPOW. This, bitches, is the type of focus that will lead to #12.

Bella I’m going to assume you only watched the first 19 minutes of the 3rd period of Game 5. Unless you’re a glutton for punishment, or you hate yourself.
Posted by Triple Deke Tyler from Lansing on 04/16/09 at 09:54 AM ET
I should add, I watched the third period of game 5 up to Rafalski’s goal. That was one of my favorite moments of last year’s playoffs ... he just looked so freakin’ happy. I refuse to let 34.7 get into my head.

Im not sure if I have the ability to lose all time and focus staring at my tv, and try to be witty and follow along in front of my computer. I think my input into the live blog tonight will only happen in such ways.
1. A blow out of epic proportions
2. A *#$%@& blow out of *#$%@& epic *#$%@& proportions
3. Between periods
4. Some super awesome comment from Murph
I reserve the right to completely ignore the blog during play if I am in a panic state as I can not be held responsible for anything I may say.
Posted by AxeMaster9 on 04/16/09 at 10:00 AM ET
Ahhh, makes sense now. I admit myself that I’ve watched that 3rd period more than once, it’s perhaps the finest stretch of Red Wings hockey that I’ve ever seen. And I agree on the Rafalski thing. It’s weird—even though I know the terrifying conclusion of the game—I still get chills watching the third goal of Game 5. Remember how happy we all were? Do you? Why the *#$%@& didn’t we win that game.

I almost cried when he scored. Barely kept from throwing up at 34.7 and literally had heart palpitations during the second OT. The way I felt the next day was worse than how I’d felt with any of the playoff eliminations the previous year.
The reason I won’t let it get to my head is that we won the motherf@#&ing;Cup two nights later. The incredible resiliency and leadership of this team just blows my mind. I was ready to down a fistful of Seroquel with a chaser of Liquid Plumbr, and they picked themselves up and won the freakin’ game. I’ve kept reminding myself of that the many times I’ve questioned them and their heart this season (hell, the many times I’ve questioned them today).

SO i just read the comments from game 6 last year. I would like to hand out the “making me laugh so hard I spit coffee, on the day the stress train really leaves the station and the day I thought laughter would be over for a long time” award to Gabriel for this little ditty on Lilja getting handed the Stanley Cup.
Waiting for Lilja to skate into the defensive zone and drop it.

Paging the Chief: another addition to the “Playoffs Suck” Manifesto. I don’t know what the hell “palpitations” are, but when you combine “heart” and a word I don’t know, I’m going to assume that is a bad thing.

Got my tickets for game one and two and the streak is on the line…let me remind you (just because I love saying it)...I am eight and zero watching the Wings live this year, 7 and 0 at the Joe and a whoppin’ 1 and 0 at Wrigley, but it all comes down to this…I want to start a new winning streak starting tonight. You want loud, Stevie? I’ll be the other obnoixious ‘eff’ at this game…I’m the guy who was screaming “WE OWN YOU TURCO” between Karens “...free” and “and the home…” last year during the WCF’s (no disrespect to the Star Spangled Banner or our hot-a$$ MILF of a singer). Let’s get loud! Let’s get proud! I wore my cheap knock-off SC Champ ring that I got at the Calgary game early this year, I’m wearing a bright red button-up to my “business casual” office today, my hands are already shaking…nervous? Hell yes, but more excited than anything. The #40 jersey goes on, the lungs and liver will be warmed up…it’s the BEST TIME OF THE YEAR. Red Wings Playoff Hockey…bring on the BJ’s.
LET’S DO THIS (invisible exclamation point)

Khan(!) says Cleary is playing tonight:
Update from Thursday’s morning skate: Wings forward Dan Cleary confirmed that he will play tonight, saying he feels much better after staying off the ice on Wednesday. He said he is able to do all the things he normally does after sustaining what the team said is a lower-body injury on a hit from Niklas Kronwall during Tuesday’s practice.
Cleary will play on a line with Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen.
“I feel good, feel ready to go,’’ Cleary said. “Once I got the (test) results back, no probem.’‘
The other lines are:
Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Hossa
Hudler-Filppula-Samuelsson
Kopecky-Helm-Maltby
Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Ericsson-Lebda
Osgood
Conklin
Kris Draper will miss at least the first two games with an upper-body injury. Chris Chelios and Derek Meech are healthy scratches, Ville Leino, recalled from Grand Rapids in case Cleary wasn’t able to play, was reassigned to the Griffins in time for Game 1 of their playoff series against Hamilton on Friday.
Here are the expected lines for Columbus, based on yesterday’s practice:
Huselius-Malhotra-Nash
Umberger-Vermette-Voracek
Chimera-Peca-Modin
Torres-Williams-Boll
Hejda-Commodore
Tyutin-Klesla
Methot-Russell
Coach Ken Hitchcock said center Andrew Murray is out for Game 1 and will be re-evaluated after that

I believe…
J = 8
I = 1
N = 1
X = 8
Sub-total = 18
Total w/ Triple Word Score = 54
Nathan, I hate to be the one to break this to you, but you just might not be neurotic enough to be a Wings fan.
Haha, funny story about that. A week ago my wife comes in the room and says, “We need to talk about something,” you know, all serious-like. And I shit you not, she proceeds to discuss how she knows the playoffs are coming up, and that she wanted me to know that she seriously fears for my health because I get so worked up, and angry and sad and depressed when they lose in the playoffs. I’m serious. I laughed at her, in denial, of course.
I’m plenty neurotic. But the good thing about being a neurotic fan of any team, is when they win it all, everything that happened to that final point of victory in the season is washed away, and all that’s left is joy.
So, I would suggest that the Chief quit reading so damn much into what happened in game five, and how he thinks that has some impact on how the team has played this year. I think the off-season of praise and partying had more impact on this season than what happened in a game that, despite it’s difficulties at the moment, ended up being no more than blip on the way to yet another Cup.

My wife staged an intervention last night. We had a couple over for dinner last night. I went to try and check on the scores and she trots out the poor-hockey-widow-for-two-months-of-playoffs. The guest husband was a huge Laker fan and we heard it from the two of them. Guest husband knows nothing about hockey but was very interested, so I think the wives’ plan backfired and I’ve converted another one to the dark side…

Nice, Dub. Now I want to blow off work and go home and download a Sega Genesis ROM of NHL ‘93 so I can kick the shit out of everyone with the game set to no line changes with my forward line as Yzerman/Fedorov/Probert and my defense as Lidstrom/Konstantinov. And I always kick Cheveldae out in favor of Riendeau, just because you know, in Detroit, the back-up goalie always better.

The WORST part of game 5 was Petr Freaking Sykora calling his shot in the OT to the DC from the bench. Little prick went out on his next shift and potted it. To me that’s FAR more incindiary than 34.7.

Chief, as a dedicated US citizen, it gives me great pride when I think of the skill and professionalism with which our SEALs took care of that situation. I can only imagine the pride it instills in a member of our armed forces such as yourself.
I cannot imagine a more difficult shot to take, and not only did one of them hit the target…they all did. Simply phenomenal.
They have the most amazing ability to calm their nerves and focus on what they’re doing, probably above and beyond pretty much any other humans alive.
But I’ll bet if any of them are Wings fans they’re shaking like a leaf today like the rest of us…
