GDT - Game #68: Red Wings host Sabres (7:00)

The Red Wings appear to be heating up.  They have scored a power-play goal in eight straight games, the longest active streak in the league. Johan Franzen has six goals in eight games since returning from a four-month injury absence, including two goals in Thursday’s 5-1 defeat of the Wild.  TPH has recorded seven power-play assists in his last eight games, after registering only five power-play assists in his first 59 games this season.  DET will try to win consecutive games for the second time since the Olympic break and regain the 8th spot in the W.C. CGY are idle tonight, they play at VAN tomorrow.

This is DET’s last home game before a three-game western swing that takes them to CGY, EDM, and VAN.  I fully expect Ryan Miller to receive much love from his home town fans at the Joe before the game.  I also expect the Wings to abuse his sterling 2.15 GAA (2), and 0.931 save % (1).

Pressure packed game tonight.

Amazingly, Uncle Mike is sticking with the winning lineup against MIN, Khan(!):

Coach Mike Babcock said he isn’t planning on any lineup changes for Saturday’s game against Buffalo at Joe Louis Arena (7 p.m., FSN), meaning Jimmy Howard will make his 15th consecutive start in goal and Brett Lebda stays in on defense in place of Jonathan Ericsson.

The lines remained the same in practice:

Franzen-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Filppula-Zetterberg-Cleary
Bertuzzi-Miller-Williams
Draper-Helm-Eaves

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Lebda-Lilja
Ericsson-Meech (scratches)

Howard (starting)
Osgood

——————————————————————————————————
Expect BUF to come in with something to prove tonight, after their 3-2 loss, at home, against MIN last night (Lalime in net), John Vogl, Buffalo News:

It was a hostile environment to say the least. Contempt, derision and mocking calls repeatedly descended upon Patrick Lalime and the Buffalo Sabres. The crowd in HSBC Arena was furious and disappointed in its team almost from the outset, and it had no desire to hold the feelings in.

“I felt like I was on the road a little bit,” Lalime said.

The goaltender and his teammates brought most of the scorn upon themselves.

Lalime allowed two goals in the opening 10:11, and the Sabres’ inappropriately named “power play” struggled again during a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild. The visitors built a 3-0 lead before the Sabres’ attempt to extend their three-game winning streak ended in vain.

“When you give up the first two [in the first period], it makes it extremely tough on you,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. “The energy is sucked right out of your building, and that’s what happened. We didn’t do anything to get it back.”

If backups play like Sawchuk against us, will Miller play like Legace?

Thanks, Okie.

As all games will be until the playoffs,
a “W” is the only acceptable outcome for the Wings tonight.

Thanks Jeff, nice pre-game…

You don’t expect to see a pre-season game in March, right in the middle of a race for the final playoff slot.  That is exactly what I saw Thursday against MIN.  I wouldn’t even count that as a legitimate win while waiting for the 3 in a row.  I am hoping for a bit of intensity tonight, and from what I read about last nights BUF game, I expect Ruff will have his guys ready to play.

Go Wings..

You can’t fool me Gramps, I know you’re just trying to poke Minny in the eye so we’ll have a good game on the 26th. wink

3 little letters say it all, WIN.
I’ll be ready for the LB tonight, spent the morning prepping goodies for the smoker so I’ll be drinking beer and tending a fire all afternoon. Venison jerky and summer sausage galore by the end of the day.
Rummie, your care package will be headed your way this week.
Cap’n D, if you still have my e-mail add’y, e-mail me a ship to address for you as well.

Anyone else just see Huet poop the bed and allow two goals in the last 2:04 of the Hawks-Flyers game.  Victory Flyers on a Pronger GWG.  And he was named player of the game.

That’s gotta smart.

Ladies and gentlemen, Junior’s goaltender extraordinaire for the playoffs, Cristobal Huet.  FMAO.

@ Voox:

Doesn’t it feel great to realize that Junior’s, “built to win the Cup now,” totally untenable salary situation is completely undermined by their lack of an elite NHL netminder?

The City of Wind sports media is going to be a real hoot after Huet sieves the Hawks out of the playoffs.

He played a damn good game…
His D (and backcheckers) kinda left him naked there for those 2…
Prongers GW was a 4 on 2.

At least it wasn’t Leino.

I’ll take your word for it, only saw the last 4 minutes of the game.  Still funny to see it happen when the Wings aren’t the ones giving up the lead.

I’ve been to Rochester many times, it’s alright.  People party really hard in Buffalo.  Really fauxing hard.  I can only imagine the level it gets raised to on Saint Patty’s weekend.  My liver hurts just thinking about it.

Everyone keeps commenting about Huet but what about Niemi, hes 18-5 with 4 SOs and has a 91% save percentage and a 2.24GAA, I dont understand why he isn’t getting a longer look…

@ pgoody:

I’d say it’s due to the fact Niemi is 26 and only has one season at the NHL level. He may have better physical tools than Huet at this point in their careers, but I’ve got to think that Niemi’s lack of experience makes Chicago really nervous about making him the #1 option in goal.
