0848: Updated below with a welcome note to Mac from an unlikely source.
Paul pointed you to the Chelios interview yesterday, during which Jimmy D Jr. said he believed Darren McCarty was already back in Detroit. Of course, that led to speculation that he could play as early as Sunday against Bubba. Ted Kulfan, former Deep Digger captain, says…not so fast.
Darren McCarty is coming to Detroit quicker than expected but not to play. McCarty is bothered by a rib cartilage injury suffered last weekend while playing with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. He will be examined by Wings trainers Friday and will not be on the ice.
General manager Ken Holland said trainers will determine whether McCarty is able to play with the Griffins Saturday in Cleveland. McCarty was held out of Thursday’s Griffins game in Milwaukee.
“We’re going to see if he’s able to play,” Holland said. “Right now, he’s not able to play. It’s nothing more than day to day.”
Couple issues here. Have you read about McCarty’s rib injury until today? Not anything written by the Deep Diggers. Yeah, we pointed it out a few days ago, but only because Michael Zudeima of the GR Press had written about it in his game report Tuesday morning. Speaking of Zudeima, I’ve asked him a few questions about Mac’s return and I should be getting the answers back soon. When I do, you’ll have ‘em.
And a kudos to our pal Adrienne Dater for this entry in his blog this morning,
I might be risking losing a few Avs readers forever over this brief note, but here’s to a happy return to the NHL and Red Wings to Darren McCarty.
He’s a tremendous guy, somebody I got to know a little bit during the process of writing “Blood Feud” - and, no, this is not a cheap book plug here.
McCarty has, by all accounts, worked real hard to get his life back together, and has looked great in his comeback stints in the minors before re-signing with the Wings.I personally hope he has several more years in the NHL. He’s a real hockey player, a guy I’d want on my team if I were a GM. And, he’s going to help the Wings in the playoffs.
So, welcome back, Mac.
Still a tool, but a classy move.

No need to rush anyone back. Let the depth simmer a little bit. It might be nice to have Nick back for Dallas, as a regulation win would build the cushion by four points, but otherwise, yeah, don’t rush anyone. As long as D-Mac is getting his conditioning back to be able to play five to ten even-strength minutes a night, I don’t see much of a point in rushing him either.
Looking good for a healthy roster heading into the playoffs. A few games for it all to click again, and maybe in September we’ll see the banners in the Joe go up to eleven. Smell the glove, baby.

And there, ladies and gentlemen, are two excellent options for this season’s playoff slogan:
1.) This one goes up to 11
2.) Smell the glove (with Al the Octopus giving Sasquatch eight simultaneous face washes)
Thanks, Andrew!

worked real hard
Ugh. I feel bad for the poor soul(s) who had to edit an entire book of Dater’s junior-high level “writing”. How this hack is employed remains an ongoing mystery. Pics of a publisher with farm animals is my guess.

Unless it was aggravated during Wednesday’s game, I imagine it really is a day to day thing. What’s the likliehood that you break a rib on Sunday, play Wednesday, then decide you’re too uncomfortable on Thursday? Then again, it is McCarty…being this close to a return, he’d probably play with two broken legs and a concussion.
I’m waffling. Must be close to playoff time.
Regarding Dater, that really was a classy move and it’s good to know he’s a hockey fan first. In fact, in the wake of his healing words, I’m left with a strange feeling of compassion…and, damn…I just have to say it.
Dater, if you’re reading this, I forgive you for being a crappy writer.
Wow. I feel better already.

The contrast between what Thomas says about the Avs here, and what he says on his blog, is startling - and exposes him as an intentional troll.

Aw, shucks guys, it was nothing. Thanks though.
And Dub, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. That is a truly awe-inspiring power you have. I’m just glad you’re on our side and use it for good instead of evil. I’ll just back out of the room bowing now…

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. If not Sunday then probably Tuesday vs Chicago. Also, during the St Louie Spank Session, Mickey Redmond mentioned that he doesn’t expect Lidstrom to play on Sunday. The Wings are doing good and there’s no reason to rush him.
