Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. Note To Kenny: I’ve Got Another One For You

Memo below inspired by A2Y logic Czar, Grampa Pinhead.

Dear Tick Tock,

I know I said I’d leave you alone this summer.  I said this was the true “Summer of Ken.” Your time to relax and enjoy the accolades and the rainbows, the puppies and bonfires and stuff.

But I take it back. I take it all back and I’m not ashamed.

Because Kenny?

We want you to sign Darcy Tucker.

We want you to sign him quickly, like July 1st at 0001.  We’d like you to sign him because we saw what Dallas Drake did for this team last year and we think Tucker would offer at least that.

We’d like you to sign him because as much as we enjoy antagonizing the Dive fans and the Bitter Bitch Blues fans, the instinct to give it to the TO faithful is ingrained in us like nothing else.

We think you can get Tucker for relatively cheap, Kenny. We’re thinking 4 mil/year for two years?  Yep. Fits the structure doesn’t it?  I told you it would.

Kenny, you’re our friend. We like you.

Now get it done bitch.

Sincerely,
(Some of) The A2Y 19

I like that.

Thanks, Duke

I don’t know.  He can be a pain in the butt in the room.  But with Lids, Draper and Chelios I’m sure he would mellow.  Can be a liability out on the ice temper wise.  Takes a lot of stupid penalties. Needs to improve his off ice workouts especially in the off season.

Dallas Drake wasn’t such a liability temper wise and a good guy with his teammates in the room.

Tucker would really have to mellow on a team like Detroit.

Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan  on  06/26  at  10:55 AM

Not to mention he made 3mil last season. Kinda high for him. Kenny won’t pay him more then Drapes.

Even better. Kenny gets him for 2.5/season. Minimal dent to the cap.

I’m thinking even less, don’t forget the 6 mil subsidy he gets from the Toronto buyout....

How bad does he want his name on OUR Stanley..?

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  06/26  at  11:06 AM

2.5 is still to much when you consider the balance of contrats. hank’s deal is three years old mind you but he makes like 2.6 homer makes 2.2 cleary 2.8 and drapes 1.6. tucker would have to take less, much less!

Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan  on  06/26  at  11:07 AM

I’m not so sure. I personally wouldn’t invest in Tucker. As others have said, he’s an on-ice liability, takes dumb penalties, etc. I don’t see him mellowing out anytime soon, either.

I would pass, but that’s just me.

Posted by Alan from Atlanta, GA, USA  on  06/26  at  11:15 AM

The more I hear about this, the more I think it’s actually a good, sensible idea.  He’s still got offense, and with regular PP time could bring 20-25 goals.  As far as character issues, yeah, he takes some stupid penalties, but team-wise, all I’ve seen is a heart-and-soul player.  He fights for his team mates, stands up and is counted, and most reports I’ve seen have him as a warrior in the locker room.  And he’d have the fire that a potential Cup would bring.  He’d be abrasive, which is something we’ll need if Drake retires and we can’t re-sign Stuart.  And he’d be CHEEP.

The fact is, I hated seeing the guy play whenever NASN aired a Laffs game.  I thought he was a thug and a sneaky goalscorer.  I thought he was an agitator and a loudmouth.  A royal pain in the ass.  And that’s exactly why I would want a guy like him on MY team.

Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Tuck-Summer '69...er, 2008  on  06/26  at  11:16 AM

The very thought of Tucker agitating the likes of Ian Laperriere, Corey Perry, Barret Jackman, and Jordin Tootoo into stupid penalties?

Sure, why not?

Posted by SYF from Las Vegas, NV  on  06/26  at  11:24 AM

If he keeps his mouth shut, plays heart and soul, cuts down on penalties and takes 1.5mil then he might be a good fit. I just don’t see it any other way thats all. Mac or downey will have to go and I think it would be downey which is no real loss.

Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan  on  06/26  at  11:25 AM

I’d love to see either him or Avery on the team next year if Drake retires.

Posted by Hippy Dave from San Francisco by way of Detroit  on  06/26  at  11:26 AM

He just got cut, but I think he’ll go to a higher bidder with more need for veteran leadership.

Posted by Osrt  on  06/26  at  11:29 AM

F@#$ Avery; I don’t want that idiot associated with the Wings.

Posted by Osrt  on  06/26  at  11:30 AM

Avery??

RWBill doesn’t need him competing for Karen Newman’s affections.

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  06/26  at  11:35 AM

Cheif are you high? Maybe two mil per year. The absolute max you can offer him is what Dan Cleary is making… so I think 2.8? And that’s honestly too high, because Tucker can’t play defense the way Cleary can.

Posted by Nathan  on  06/26  at  11:36 AM

Oh phuck no.

I’d take Chris Simon on my team before Tucker. They’re both complete idiots, but one of them doesn’t think he’s the sh!t for no good reason. One is +28 for his career, the other is -70. One of them may think he has something to prove, the other thinks he’s already proved it.

If you need a more juvenile reason, there’s the whole girl-name thing. Kris, Valtteri, and (groan) Andreas are as close as I want to get.

(please don’t think the above means I’m lobbying to get Simon, it was just to make a point)

Posted by shep from california  on  06/26  at  11:37 AM

About Tucker....He’s got some of the necessary grit and is a PITA but also can play hockey pretty well when he wants. he likes the rough stuff like Dally does but has better hands (not just for pugilism).
Avery was a non-issue in our room and off the ice he wasn’t running his gums to the media as a Wing (was just a kid too but just the same he by rights should have been lass mature then). Me thinks we’d be able to have Tucker behave and he might actually elevate his behavior to fit in & keep ice time IF IF IF. Nice to have someone like him in that “depth” forward position.

Posted by MOWingsfan19  on  06/26  at  11:43 AM

If he keeps his mouth shut, plays heart and soul, cuts down on penalties and takes 1.5mil then he might be a good fit.

Even under those conditions—which I seriously doubt will occur (especially $1.5 mil)—the thought of Tucker on the Wings gives me indigestion. Kinda like the acquisitions of Bertuzzi, D. Hatcher, U. Samuelsson, Wendy Clark and Federko did. In fairness, I have to admit Chelios was once on that list too. So never say never, I guess. But Tucker? Uuuuh, I hope not.

Posted by YzermanZetterberg  on  06/26  at  11:45 AM

the whole girl-name thing. Kris, Valtteri, and (groan) Andreas are as close as I want to get.

Andreas=Swedish ‘Andrew.’
Valtteri=Finnish ‘Walter.’

So your point is...?  I only agree with you on Kris, because my high school art teacher had that name.

I think I’ve made my views on Avery clear already.  If we’d had any idea just what kind of uber-pest he’d become, we would never have traded him.  And shouldn’t have.

But Tucker would be taking a more ‘D-Mac of the Second Line’ role.  A scorer, hitter, enforcer that can play more minutes, has better hockey sense, and can score a few more goals.  He shouldn’t be overpaid (four mil is way out, should be closer to two), and if anyone can keep him from taking boneheaded penalties, it’s Mike Babcock.

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  06/26  at  11:52 AM

I can’t see paying him more then Draper.  kris is a top ten face-off guy, kills penalty’s, still agitates, former selke winner, a heart and soul guy and takes his fitness and off ice workouts more serious then anyone in the room.  He knows how to lead, he knows how to handle the media and he shows up every game. The only thing he doesn’t do is fight. No biggie there. Draper took less to stay in this organization because he knows how great it is.  That is leadership alone.

Tucker might be a third line player who gets time on the pp but that could take away time from Homer and Franzen in front of the net.

Does anyone know what Drake made last season? under a mil I’d guess.

Can’t upset the balance of payroll in Detroit, it alone has helped them win cups!

We will find someone who wants to take less and play for us and the cup.

Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan  on  06/26  at  12:09 PM

I heard the same argument over and over last summer after we landed Drake.

Not from me. (Unlike some others, I’m almost always happy to see former Wings return to the fold. For example, I’d love it if they got Mike Knuble back. I don’t think they will, but I’d be very happy if they did. Wow, as I’m thinking about it, I can’t remember any case—even ones that were probably questionable, like Doug Brown—where I was unhappy about reacquiring a former Red Wing.)

If we’d had any idea just what kind of uber-pest he’d [Avery] become, we would never have traded him.  And shouldn’t have.

From what I understand, the organ-I-zation didn’t really want to, but it was “No Avery, no Schneider.”

Posted by YzermanZetterberg  on  06/26  at  12:14 PM

I may be both mainstream and boring in thinking Sundin would be a great fit for the Wings and vise-versa.

Sundin (6’5"/230 lb) and Franzen (6’3"/220 lb) on the same line would be a pretty daunting task for any defense.  They both routinely make fantastic plays and are extremely strong on the skates.  Who do you go for as a defender cause containing both will be very difficult?

Posted by lilja4ever  on  06/26  at  12:22 PM

I am in the “no thanks” camp on Darcy Tucker.  He would have to take a huge cut, I think $1.5 mil is about right for him but I could see him being a problem in a lot of ways.  He takes extremely dumb penalties at very bad times and runs his mouth way too much.  Could the Wings environment change that?  I am not so sure.

Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO  on  06/26  at  12:32 PM

I may be both mainstream and boring in thinking Sundin would be a great fit for the Wings and vise-versa.

No argument here. What I’m finding hard to believe it that he suppposedly wants to go to the Rangers.

Posted by YzermanZetterberg  on  06/26  at  12:32 PM

it that he suppposedly

“is that he supposedly”

(whoops)

Posted by YzermanZetterberg  on  06/26  at  12:35 PM

I dunno.....shouldn’t a guy who agitates and fights a lot occasionally WIN one of those fights? Tucker gets his ass beat down more often than a red-headed stepchild. That can’t be a good thing.

Posted by dougie  on  06/26  at  12:42 PM

Has anybody looked at Tucker’s stats from last year? 74 Games. 18 goals. 16 assists. 18 goals is nothing to sneeze at, especially considering Drake’s 3-3 statline. But to insinuate that he brings an offensive presence, and thats the reason to sign him, is absurd. He won’t play above the third line. His actualy worth is probably less than 2 million, given his reputation. Pay him for what you will use him for, which is a solid forecheck, and to chip in the occassional goal. He won’t score 18 with the Wings, too much scoring depth.

That being said, I highly doubt he mellows. If he can’t control himself with Sundin as his captain, why is there any reason to think he will with Lids running the show? I think this says it best.

If he keeps his mouth shut, plays heart and soul, cuts down on penalties and takes 1.5mil then he might be a good fit.

The Wings are dominant because they are in harmony, everyone has their role. Throw a wrench in there, and it could seriously dampen things. I think someone said in the last post that Drake knew what his role would be, and did it, which is dead. Tucker thinks he sh!ts ice cream and pisses sunshine. He won’t take that role.

Posted by rwingscup19 from Dallas  on  06/26  at  12:45 PM

I say no to Darcy Tucker.  Too many bad penalties - I think he’s started to believe his own press and think he is more of a scorer than an agitator.  Let someone else pay for his late penalties instead of Detroit.

I wonder if Toronto is going to sign Avery to replace Tucker.  Younger and even more of an irritating cockroach.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  06/26  at  12:48 PM

I am in the NO Tucker camp. You see, when you play for the Leafs, you really do not worry about winning. Cujo was a bust, and he was of the mentality that he was going to be worshiped. Win, lose, or draw. That is the prevailing attitude in Toronto.
I’m sure if Tucker had something to offer, he would still be a Leaf. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

If Kenny has one smart brain cell left in his head ( and I know he has billions), he would NEVER!!!!!!!!! sign this cheap-shot, trailer trash, diver, loudmouth, whiner, crybaby, punk of a player who is clearly past his prime...worst of all he played for the Maple Losers, who I have absolutely no respect for and will always hate...(The Ducks are a close second though) A guy like Tucker has never had a huge role with Team Canada even though he put up ok numbers and do you know why? Because he sucks! Its that simple. We do not need to overpay for this loser of a player, because he will want more then he is worth even though he is making money from his buyout… PLEASE MR. HOLLAND I know you will do better then Tucker, because you are the best GM in the League by far.

Ladies and gentleman, your Americanized Detroit Red Wings:

Henrik (Henry/Hank) Zetterberg
Andreas (Andrew/Andy) Lilja
Valtteri (Walter/Walt/Wally) Filppula
Johan (John/Johnny) Franzen
Pavel (Paul?) Datsyuk
Jiri (Jerome?/Jerry?) Hudler

Plus, in the pipeline:

Jakub (Jacob/Jake) Kindl
Jan (John/Johnny) Mursak
Ville (Willie) Leino
Joakim (??????) Andersson
Mattias (Matthew/Matt) Ritola
Johan (John/Johnny) Ryno
Sergei (??????) Kolosov

If you want to see something even more weird, check out the depth chart on the Red Wings web site:

http://redwings.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=DepthChartPage&dcid=17

Posted by YzermanZetterberg  on  06/26  at  01:43 PM

Lets be clear about what’s necessary here. A second line goal scorer/ shooter. If Kenny thought Hudler was ready for that role, or that Franzen is a lock to produce like he did in the playoffs (or reasonably close), then there wouldn’t be this search.

So space #1: A second line scorer/ shooter. This is *not* Tucker. His 18 goals last season is fine but it’s much harder to produce when you’re getting used to a new defense first system; Stevie talked about having to adjust his offensive thinking so that he wouldn’t be caught in a bad position.

I also wonder about Linio (sp?) stepping in.

Space #2: The need for a gritty, potential Pk, veteran. Role opened by Drake’s most likely absence. This is most likely where Tucker would fit in, but I’m coming to think he may not be necessary. Given that Mac and Downey are both coming back and Kopecky is due to have a Kronwall like rise (i.e. one freaking injury free season & playoffs).

Thinking out loud

New Math?  (I have that song on mine).

I have over 12,000 tracks on my Creative 60 gig player, but a lot of those are at a higher bitrate than I prefer, so could probably squeeze a fair few more on.  But that’s my entire music collection (and then some), so I’m not really complaining.

What I wouldn’t give to know what Nick Lidstrom has on his…

Pavel (Paul?) Datsyuk

Got it in one.

Jiri (Jerome?/Jerry?) Hudler

Don’t know, but ‘Gerald’ wouldn’t surprise me.  One to look up.

Joakim (??????) Andersson

This one’s good.  No literal ‘white bread’ translation of this.  The closest approximation is the Hispanic ‘Joaquim’ (as in Phoenix), but it’s pronounced vastly different (Zho-Ah-Keem).  The Swedish are suckers for Spanish things (should be, there are loads of them on the Iberain costas every summer)-- just ask my friend Manuela from Stockholm.

Sergei (??????) Kolosov

Again, I’m not sure there’s any English approximation.  Slavic names are tough.

Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from the multilingual hotpot of Europe  on  06/26  at  01:57 PM

Jiri (Jerome?/Jerry?) Hudler

The consensus translation is apparently ‘George.’ Huh.

As for Sergei, don’t even bother.  Of Latin origin, apparently there’s no English equivalent.  The closest would be the French ‘Serge.’ For what it’s worth, many Sergeis from Russia, upon immigrating to the West, commonly took the names ‘Charles’ or ‘Cyril.’ So he’s ‘Chuck Kolosov.’ Does that help?

Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from lost in the interwebz  on  06/26  at  02:04 PM

today is the slowest day ever.

how is this for a question. let’s say every player on the team is a UFA. they all leave. how long before kenny has the wings back on top?

i say 3 days.

A piece of string walks into a bar with his buddies. They all go up to the bar to order their drinks before sitting down. The string tries to order a beer, but the bartender says “I’m sorry, but we don’t serve strings here.”

The string goes and sits down, a little PO’ed. A few minutes later, he figures he’ll try his luck and attempt to get a beer. He’s walks up and the bartender says to him “listen buddy, i’m sorry, but we just don’t serve strings.”

So he goes and sits back down. A few minutes later, he comes up with an idea. He ties himself into a loop, takes the end of it and rubs on it until it gets a little loose.

He walks up to the bar again, and the bartender says “hey, aren’t you a string?”
String replies “no, i’m a frayed knot”

Joakim (??????) Andersson

Actually, this is a pretty impressive name:

(courtesy of several iterations on http://www.behindthename.com/)

JOAKIM = Scandinavian form of JOACHIM

JOACHIM = Contracted form of JEHOIACHIN or JEHOIAKIM. According to the apocryphal Gospel of James, Saint Joachim was the husband of Saint Anne and the father of the Virgin Mary.

JEHOIACHIN = Means “established by YAHWEH” in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this is the name of a king of Judah who was imprisoned in Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar.

JEHOIAKIM = Means “raised by YAHWEH” in Hebrew. In the Old Testament this is the name of a king of Judah, the father of Jehoiachin.

So essentially, it’s the name of a king.  Not as wimpy as you might think, eh?  wink

BTW, if anyone is all that bored, look up your own name on http://www.behindthename.com/.

Here’s our fearless leader:  smile

BILL = Short form of WILLIAM, arising in the 19th century. The change in the initial consonant may have been influenced by an earlier Irish pronunciation of the name.

WILLIAM = From the Germanic name Wilhelm, which was composed of the elements wil “will, desire” and helm “helmet, protection”. The name was introduced to Britain by the Normans. It has belonged to several rulers of England, Prussia, and Germany, including William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England. Other famous bearers were Willian Wallace, a 13th-century Scottish hero, and William Tell, a legendary 14th-century Swiss hero. In the literary world it has been borne by dramatist William Shakespeare and poet William Blake, as well as contemporary authors William Faulkner and William S. Burroughs.

The derivation of my own name is actually a little scary, so I’m not sure how to feel about that.

just don’t rag on my city.

Okay, fine. But in the spirit of keeping up the snarky juvenilicity that A2Y is known and loved for, I have to ask:

Why did you grow a playoff beard? Were you in the playoffs? And why was said playoff beard still intact after the playoffs were over? Do you consider yourself a “playa,” so you feel the need to keep a playoff beard year-round?

Please answer. My boyfriend needs to know!

LOL

(BTW, your band didn’t sound half bad.)

And FYI:

DARCY
Gender: Masculine & Feminine
From a Norman surname meaning “from Arcy” from French D’Arcy, originally denoting one who came from Arcy in France. This is the surname of a character in Jane Austen’s novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

Still want Tucker, if you are going to judge based on “hockey name” or not?  LOL

I’m late to this party, and the conversation seems to have taken a bit of a turn, but…

Please, please, no.  I know you’re reading this, Kenny, so please ignore everyone who suggests getting Darcy Tucker.  Ignore the comparisons to Dallas Drake.  They’re both the “gritty” type of players that some fans and media types love to overrate, but the similarities end there.

Darcy Tucker scored 0.3 points per 60 minutes of even-strength ice time more than Drake did last year, and he did it with better teammates against worse competition.  He also played 3 minutes a night on an average power play (15th overall), yet only managed 10 points in 74 games--that’s 2.6 points per 60 minutes--worse than every Wings forward this side of Kopecky.  He also wasn’t good enough to play on the second worst penalty kill in the league, compared to Drake’s 3 PK minutes a game last year.  And to compound that problem, he took two penalties every three games, compared to Drake, who took just over one penalty every four.

That’s not even getting into the whole question of leadership, character, and dressing room presence.  Darcy Tucker does not have anything to bring to the Red Wings.  Stay, stay, stay away.

Valteri = WALTER
Gender: Masculine

Usage: English, German, Scandinavian, Polish

Pronounced: WAWL-tur (English), VAHL-ter (German, Polish) [key]

From a Germanic name meaning “ruler of the army”, composed of the elements wald “rule” and heri “army”. A famous bearer of this name was Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish novelist who wrote ‘Ivanhoe’ and other notable works.

Sounds good to me.
Flip can lead the Red (Wing) Army some day.

for the record, the juvenility has always been fine by me. gay-bashing...not so much. however, in the spirit of your question:

i grew it for solidarity. and i was too stoked after the win to shave it off. and i don’t really have a strong chin so i make up for it with a manageable beard most of the time. right before the playoffs start, i shave it all and start anew. like singles night at Necto’s in Ann Arbor. where you met your boyfriend. and i met mine.

I SPENT THE MORNING WITH THE CUP!

Kelle Ilitch brought the Cup to share with several hundred kids with muscular dystrophy this morning at their annual summer camp.

I’m blessed to be able to party with my MDA friends every year at Camp Cavell about 45 north of Port Huron every year, and this year’s topper was the glorious arrival of the silver chalice.

The Ilitch family is PURE class and they made a bunch of really amazing kids that much more important this morning....not to mention making a dream come true for me.

WOW....simply WOW. There are no other words. I hope you all get your turn!

Thanks Red Wings:)

We can’t call Fil anything resembling “Walt”, That nickname is reserved for Fatchuck (called him that ever since he managed to get booted from training camp for being like 15 lbs overweight, and Hully used to refer to himself as the “laziest person alive").
There is no way we can use the same nickname for a Wing as an established veteran in a place like STL.

gay-bashing...not so much.

Alex --
Gay bashing? Huh? I made a stupid joke tying your comments about the names Walter and Jerry to the fact that you live in San Francisco, which is very well known for having a very large gay community. If anything, I was guilty of being cliche. If, however, I did actually offend anyone, I’d like to sincerely apologize.

No matter what YZ says, I think your city and your band are great

OTC—
I never said anything bad about San Francisco! Unless, that is, you—like Alex—think it’s “ragging” on San Francisco to make a lame joke based on the fact that a lot of gay people live there. Personally, I have nothing against San Francisco or gay people. Finally, RE: Alex’s band, I said they weren’t half bad. Actually, they sounded pretty good, but I wasn’t in the mood for dishing out a sincere compliment to Alex just then.

we need some sort of voting mechanism to ban people from posting for a couple days.

I nominate myself. I think it’s me, not the Chief, who needs a vacation!

I wasn’t sure what you meant by your remarks to Alex so all I said was ”No matter what YZ says, I think your city and your band are great...”. I didn’t say you “ragged” on him or The City. Relax. It’s all good. We’ve got much bigger things to worry about...like Lilja being resigned. wink

Oy vey! (Now I suppose I’m a Jew baiter too.)

Huh?  Sorry YZ, you’ll really have to try better than that if you want to get my dander up.  I’ve got thicker skin than that.  If you’re looking for a fight, jokes about gefilte fish, my mother, and the fact that I’m neither a doctor or a lawyer work well. wink

JEHOIAKIM = Means “raised by YAHWEH” in Hebrew.

As long as I’ve got my Jewish hat on, this is a bad corruption of what that would really translate to.  A better translation, if you’re using ‘Yahweh’ (the Tetragrammaton) would be ‘Javehgorem.’ Feh.

Congratulations Chief, your proud name means “to protect my head.”

I actually read it as ‘Wants a helmet.’ I can’t imagine what that MEANS…

The derivation of my own name is actually a little scary, so I’m not sure how to feel about that.

Color me intrigued.  Then again, ‘Andrew’ is from the Greek for ‘Manly.’ Talk about having the wrong freaking name...I blame Andrew Young’s father for giving his son, a hero of my father’s, that name.

Andrew - ouch, my bad.  Yes, leave off the zero I managed to place on the end.

S’aright, Chic.  Means I’m still in the lead!

Think I finally recovered from my Rush concert hangover.  Have to tell you all that I wore my Red Wings cap to the concert and got a lot of grief from people but then when I said “2008 Stanley Cup Champs” everyone responded with “Congratulations” or “Your team totally earned it.” I even got a “Gotta respect the Wings.” It was fun.  Just memo to self - half a bottle of champagne followed by one beer and then a margarita and not much food makes for a very, very bad next day.

Scott H - That is so awesome that you got to be with the Cup and thanks for your excellent work with MDA.

i think the real problem is that July 1st is taking FOREVER to get here so we can figure out our team. once that’s done, we can talk more hockey and less extracurriculars.

ps any word on Drake’s status? i hope he retires but i can’t say i’d blame him to come back for half a mil or more to play a game he loves and try to win another cup.

The derivation of my own name is actually a little scary, so I’m not sure how to feel about that.

Color me intrigued.

Well, since you asked - Look up the first name of Catherine and follow it through to Hecate.  How’d you feel if your name could be derived from a goddess of the underworld and demons?  Spooky.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  06/27  at  12:54 PM

Baroque - we are in the same boat since my name is a Welsh derivation of Catherine.  Does that mean we can rule over the NJ Devils? (shudder)

Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO  on  06/27  at  01:22 PM

Oh, I know who Hecate was.  If it’s any comfort whatsover Baroque, in the classical Greek pantheon, she was the female spirit of wild nature, and of childbirth, associated with Artemis (goddess of the hunt).  Kind of a strong female character, a prototype of Lilith (the good parts of Lilith, obviously).  Strong, independent women were problematic anathema to the early Church, hence the demonization of Lilith, and Hecate with her.  Now isn’t that a much nicer identity?

Of course, the site does say that the source is in dispute.  It could also come from “each of the two” (whatever THAT means), “torture” (okay, not great), but could be ‘from a Coptic name meaning “my consecration of your name.”’ And the last one, “pure.” Not too bad.  Then, of course, there’s the association with Pavel Datsyuk’s hometown (Yekaterinburg).  Now aren’t those much better than witchcraft and the underworld?  (And before you mention it, yes, I know Yekaterinburg is the grim industrial Soviet city where the Romanovs met their grisly end and the Russian Tsarist dynasty died, but I prefer to think of Pavel.)

I went back over Joakim while I was there, and I think they’re actually getting their sources mixed up.  ‘Established by God’ using the Tetragrammaton makes a heck of a lot more sense-- the Hebrew would be ‘Yah-veh-hah-keem.’ Turn the name into the Latin pronunciation Jehovah, and you’ve got ‘Jeh-ho-hah-keem.’ Much better than the mangling seen previously.

Chic (Welsh Catherine?  I’m guessing Catrin), when you catch me up, let’s you and me swap players for a week.  Confuse the hell out of each other.

Just promise me that if you do rule the Devils, you won’t end up looking like Lou Lamoriello.

First move: Trade for Satan!

I went back over Joakim while I was there, and I think they’re actually getting their sources mixed up.

Slow day at work?  Sounds like your are bored out of your mind.

“Pure” isn’t much better - my middle name has a root which may derive from a word for “rebelliousness.”

I’m not sure that “pure rebel” is much better than the goddess of death, but either way it’s a more interesting name than “Apple.” smile

Hahahha!  Nice.  Say what you will about Avery but he’s A: Younger than tucker, B: an easy and familiar fit with the organization, and under Babcock would most likely be made to behave, C: actually is effective when he drops the gloves, something we haven’t seen for a long, long time, and D: scores goals.  If we’re going to blow 1.5 million, Tucker’s our man.  If we’re going to blow 3.5, I still think Avery would be a great option.

Besides, now that Hasek’s gone, we have no bizarre antics to watch game to game.

Good grief… I just looked my first name. The meaning is spot on, but not so sure there is anything remotely saintly abot me nor pious.
My 3 name direct translation becomes: “watchful/alert enclosure black”. Guess I’ll stick with what’s on the birth cert.
From Behind the name:
From the Latin Gregorius, which was from the late Greek name Γρηγοριος (Gregorios), which was derived from γρηγορος (gregoros) meaning “watchful, alert\”. This was the name of several saints including three Fathers of the Church: Saint Gregory Thaumaturgus (3rd century), Saint Gregory of Nyssa, and Saint Gregory of Nazianzus (both 4th century). This was also the name of 16 popes, including Gregory I, who was known as Gregory the Great.

Like the FU#@#NG MAN! ....oh sorry, wrong forum.

Strong, independent women were problematic anathema to the early Church, hence the demonization of Lilith, and Hecate with her.

They kept those demon whores where they needed to be, outside the margins. In fact, TeamDub was a bishop during his previous incarnation and told those rabble rousers to “shut their whore mouths.” It was a touching moment.

How about coach Babcock:

MICHAEL

From the Hebrew name מִיכָאֵל (Mikha’el) which meant “who is like God?”. This is the name of one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven’s armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers.
This was the name of nine Byzantine emperors and a czar of Russia. Other more modern bearers of this name include the 19th-century chemist/physicist Michael Faraday and basketball player Michael Jordan.

All the more reason to hate my parents for giving me this godforsaken name!  It doesn’t even have an interesting back story.
