By now you’ve read of the exploits of one Zach Smith, the wack job who bought two tickets to Game 4 so that he could toss a ‘pus, get kicked out and get right the hell back into Mellon Arena.
“Before the national anthem, we made our way down there and stood there,” he said. “I got it out and just tossed it.”
As the guards took him out, fans screamed obscenities.
“I hate Pittsburgh more than anything,” he said, noting the rivalry between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. “It was great. I loved the rush.”
And this is why you guys can’t stay mad at PensBlog. Here’s their version of Smith’s quote.
“I hate Pittsburgh more than anything,” he said, noting the rivalry between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. “It was great. I loved the rush. And I love men.
Dammit. Now that’s funny.
And so are these, a few of the comments from PB readers. For the record, I have no idea what an “emo” is. 39 is so frigging old.
“RE: Emo. i want to fu**ing murder that douche. i hope his dog dies.”
“I hope Emo kid gets disowned by his family on Christmas day. What a dick.”

“Octopussy should have taken some of that money he spent and gotten a real haircut.”
Many of us have been going back and forth with the Pens Blog “staff” and readers, and it’s gotten intense at times. Expected, considering what’s at stake. But, man, that’s some funny stuff. STWWT? One thing we’ll all have to admit is that we’ve found ourselves some kindred juvenilidiots. And, yeah, that’s a compliment.

Aww come on, Chief…you don’t know what an “emo” is? ;p Haven’t you gone to the mall and seen those kids with the bangs in their faces, black skinny jeans, converse shoes with rainbow shoe-laces? They are ripe with emotion…just teeming over with it really…emotion that stems from their parents trying to control them, emotion that stems from nobody in school liking them, they are black sheep in a world of white ones.
And they cut themselves to make the pain go away, mostly. Get with the times! ;p

Since Smith was able to re-enter the Igloo after getting bounced the first time, I can see the security at Mellon Arena is top-notch!
Smith is lucky to get out alive.

Zach Smith is a hero.

Morning all, back from the wilds of Indiana where I participated in some recreational drinking with the wifey and Dad to be and some friends.
Successfully motivated the 3000 foot, 200 year old TV antenna into gagging up a snowy NBC picture, captivating my new family with both my tenacity and insanity. Dad in law is now hooked, the third period did it. I could almost hear the switch flip in his head.
Looking forward to actual internet access and a LB this eve!
And yes, emo is friggin’ ridiculous.

I missed something. What is STWWT?
Dude. I just made it up this morning!! I created it. “Should the Wings Win Tonite”—STWWT.
Brilliant, eh?

I think they are referring to Emo Phillips, the comedian. he has hair like that.
Posted by Margot from Atlanta on 06/02/08 at 08:51 AM ET
I think we should make Zach Smith from Cleveland an honorary member of the 19 of us.
We might even find him a spot in the Hasek car.
Posted by w2j2 on 06/02/08 at 08:58 AM ET
Dub, I see pictures like that and I’m glad I only have daughters. If my son started wearing eyeliner, I’d have to insist on aborting him.
By the way, how are the wedding plans going?
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 06/02/08 at 09:42 AM ET
My girlfriend is from Sharon PA, a huge Pittsburgh-hating Cleveland Browns fan, and she loved that story. She is also a hockey neophyte, and even she understood the significance of that 5-on-3 Kill. That was absolutely legendary.
I’m thinking of the Tin Lizzie on N Clark St, usually reliable for watching any Detroit sporting event with kindred spirits. The Gin Mill on N Lincoln is also a possibility.

Gabe(!)
Well, the planning is going swimmingly, and by swimmingly I mean very slowly.
Very.
July 4, 2009 is about as far as we’ve gotten, might fly off to Vegas, might have it in my parent’s humongo back yard… not too sure yet.
School is whipping my lily white arse this summer, planning will proceed full steam when/if I survive this ridiculous compressed semester (5 weeks.)
On that note, I’m off to take 2 tests, study for a midterm and prepare for 2 presentations and another 2 tests.
Kill me now.

What about WTWWT (WHEN the Wings win tonight)? I’m sticking with that one as I am a bit more optimistic than the Hasek club car passengers.
And leave the kid alone, he has the balls to pull this off and the dollars too.
“Octopussy should have taken some of that money he spent and gotten a real haircut.”
Now Chief, just as a heads-up, there’s nothing wrong with the lad’s haircut. I hate to tell you this given your dedication to your country, but most of the haircuts WHITE guys sport in the military are almost cliches of the term “jarhead”.
You know the look… alot of WHITE military, prison guards, and police officers sport it… that buzzed to the scalp haircut with an flat-top “island” of 1/2” hair in the center of the head. You guys call it “high and tight”, I call it “NARC!”.
Unfortunately, it is usually accompanied by a moustache that would make an 80’s porn star blush. Let’s face it, if your haircut has to meet “Regs”, then you do NOT have a cool look.

Oh, speaking of Pensblog readers…Doctor Turk posted a picture of a bunch of them at the last game. (Turk, hope you don’t mind me reposting here…)

Am I the only one who thinks the guy in front looks like Aaron Downey?
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 06/02/08 at 09:58 AM ET
Gabe,
When those guys grow up, maybe they’ll graduate from “Lite” beer to something a bit more substantial… I have graduated beyond beer and solely run on liquor now…
Thank goodness JLA sells tequila and canadian rye! I like to do at least 4-6 shots/drinks pre-game to get warmed up… and no that doesn’t get this Canadian drunk… just a light buzz to loosen up the vocal chords.
A combination of a Canadian and Serbian liver has been my wallet’s curse at bars for years… I get broke before I get drunk most times, which is why we have better treats up in Canada to make you feel happy

Paul,
I agree with your/my variation… there is no should tonight… we WILL win the cup
Posted by VooX from Behind the Bar in the Hasek Club Car on 06/02/08 at 10:10 AM ET
Hey Paul,
Keep up the battle at Pensblog… send them into their cribs crying tonight. They are a bunch of whiners who ask for trash talk and then shy away from it over there, I am glad to see you giving them all they can handle.
I can’t join you tonight to rub their noses in our impending victory, so please keep firing those shots while I am at JLA!

heh. I’ll be sure to point out the ever-growing gap in +/- between our stars and theirs.

Chief, don’t feel bad, I had to ask my daughter what “emo” meant. Ack, when did I get so old?
Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO on 06/02/08 at 10:35 AM ET
I thought the Zach Smith story was hilarious. But yeah he’s nothing near “emo”. And that word has become so overused, it used to be a genre of music in the 90’s that had nothing to do with eye liner and haircuts. Oh well. GO WINGS!
Posted by Bryan from Columbus, OH on 06/02/08 at 10:54 AM ET
He planned for the security, too.
He entered initially with a regular shirt, tossed the octopus, was tossed out, and then threw on his Wings gear and re-entered.
No doubt the arena staff didn’t think anyone would go through quite that much effort to fling a dead mollusk.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 06/02/08 at 11:09 AM ET
Am I think on;y one to think our Octo Tossing “Emo” looks like Sammy’s little brother?
Regardless, good on him for the toss.
Posted by MOWingsfan19 on 06/02/08 at 11:17 AM ET
Baroque, Wings fans are some of the most loyal. Everyone who I’ve told the story to yesterday loved it, and thought the guy was cool for going through all the troubles.
That walk up the aisle, escorted by security, being screamed at by livid Pens fans must have been the happiest walk of his young life. I would bask in all that hatred coming to me for tossing an Octopus deep in enemy’s territory during the most important game of their season.
Just about to leave for Detroit, I wish you all a good game it should be a great one.
I hope to hear other A2Y 19 at JLA tonight. Remember, it’s not too late to win the Douche Canoe contest, although I think you might have other things on your mind tonight! ![]()
LET’S GO RED WINGS!

One thing I can tell about those 5 Pens guys in the picture is that they are card-carrying PETA members.
What other explanation could there be for bringing two dogs to a hockey game?:-)
Posted by dougie on 06/02/08 at 11:25 AM ET
Dougie, the internet’s not a easy place for women. Nothing wrong with them except for their taste in hockey teams.
And bug-eye sunglasses. I friggen hate those things.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 06/02/08 at 11:39 AM ET
“Dougie, the internet’s not a easy place for women.”
Understood, Gabriel…..But the Pensblog fans have been so darn “nice” and “reasonable” over here throughout this series, that I’m reduced to taking potshots at their women to try to get a reaction out of them.
Besides, do we REALLY have to be all PC on a hockey board? That would kinda suck, doncha think?;-)
Posted by dougie on 06/02/08 at 11:49 AM ET
ZACH SMITH IS AWESOME! hahah it was hilarious and clever and well worth it! i bet the pens fans were beyond pissed that an octopus made it out there on their “sacred” bs rink, in pensblog words: STUNNED! way to go baby! GO WINGS!
Posted by kristen from troy, mi on 06/02/08 at 12:09 PM ET
Dougie, couldn’t agree more…but three things I know to be true:
1. We’re better than them and their “Detroit women are fat.” comments.
2. My mom taught me something about respecting women who respect themselves. Fortunately, this allows me to stuff dollar bills in the g-strings of those who don’t.
3. Getting a reaction out of Pensblog readers is really, really, really easy. And the great thing about their herd mentality is that if you rile up just one, they get their colleective panties in a twist.
Deep inside the Pensblog comment section:
Did Michelle say there was obstruction? Oh…then there’s obstruction! That’s obstruction! Obstruction! There it is again! Oh my God, there’s obstruction everywhere! By the way…what’s obstruction mean?
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 06/02/08 at 12:25 PM ET
The PETA members are obviously not real Pens fans. Real Pens fans would be drinking IC, or (if absolutely neccessary) IC Light.
I bet those band wagon posers couldn’t even find Kennywood with a map and compass. Shadyside yuppy scum with their Coach bags. Blech!

“Bubba” (I think that was actually the guy’s name)—the car-burning troglodyte teen from the 1984 World Series—is officially dead.
Zach Smith lives as a true synbol of Detroit fandom (residency not required)!
GO WINGS!!!!!

Can anyone find a video of THE penalty kill from Saturday night? I was at a fcking wedding and missed it. All kinds of goals highlights out there…and they’re beautiful…but I’m dying to see the 5-on-3 coverage.

Did some of my own sleuthing on TSN and there’s about a minute of footage on the 5-3 kill towards the end of this clip on Hank for anyone interested:

question:
WTWWTC, will Tomas Kopecky be on the ice to raise it? will he be listed on the cup? my impression is that the Wings will lobby for it to happen because of his regular season play and will have it put on.
btw: how sweet for Darren Helm to play a few regular season games, and then most of the playoffs and have his name on the Cup!
also, does Hartigan get his name on the Cup?
Posted by Alex from San Francisco on 06/02/08 at 01:37 PM ET
Kopecky played 77 games in the regular season - well above the 41 game minimum, so he’ll get his name on the Cup.
Hartigan only played 23 games, so he does not qualify unless he plays a game in the SCF.

OMG ROFLMAO ! This is one of the funniest threads in a long time, or maybe I’m just a bundle of MFing nerves today. I had to text my daughter at high school to tell me what a freaking “Emo” kid is. In the meantime I saw the picture of the kid in the back seat of the minivan. Damn funny.
This is my daughter’s text explanation of what an “Emo” is:
“Like Gothic and sad and depressed like slit my wrists and leave me in the tub”
The explanation perfectly fits that kid in the minivan so much I nearly spit out my Moons Over My Hammy all over the next table. I nearly had tears running down my face. And no they are not supposed to have cell phones turned on during school, WTF!
*#$%@& Guys.
By the way, this is the same daughter Saturday night I told “No I’m not listening to you I’m trying to watch the Game!” See one of the Sunday threads for the full story. What a great dad.

emu: Australian ratite, Dromaius novaehollandiae. (phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Aves, order Struthioniformes, family Dromaiidae)
Must be the name - One of my best friends in high school was named Andrew, and he was a smarta**, too. ![]()
(Then again, I always tell people I’d rather be a smarta** than a dumba**, so who am I to talk.)
