About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site.”
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”

One Liners: Minor, Major, Does It Matter?

Kris Draper’s a frigging rebel.  On a night when the boxscore could have made an emphatic statement, he had to go and throw a shorty in there. If not for his unassisted goal in the second the entire scoresheet would have been dominated by the to this point unnamed Zetterberg, Homer and Datsyuk line.

2nd Period, 00:40: Datsyuk, assisted by Zetterberg.
3rd Period, 05:39: Holmstrom, assisted by Zetterberg and Datsyuk.
3rd Period, 07:21: Zetterberg, assisted by Holmstrom and Datsyuk.

Just another 8-point night for the only line in town.  A line we’d better come up with a name for, don’t you think?

Khan(!)

Between them, Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Holmstrom already have 10 goals and 16 assists.

“You get a little confidence when you get some points, and we play a lot, too,” Zetterberg said. “We should create some chances, and tonight the puck went in for us. The key is consistency, we have to bring it every night.”

This is a situation that just begs for statistical analysis. Considering the way the _______ line is carrying the rest of the team, you have to know that the stats must show some lopsided, crazy stuff.

Well, kinda.  The _________ line does have exactly half the team’s points: 26/52.  They’ve taken a little less than half the shots among the forwards: 65/146.  They’ve registered half the assists: 16/33 and 5 out of 7 power play goals.

Worried about ice time? Don’t.  Zetterberg’s averaging 22:23, Datsyuk’s at 21:16.  Homer’s around 17.  Richards, St. Louis and Lecavalier all average more minutes.  So do Doan, Heatley, Jagr and Drury.  Zetterberg is right up there in shifts/game though at 27, which ranks him 4th in the league.  Datsyuk’s down at 26th.

Overplaying these guys is not the concern and we all know it.  In fact, we wouldn’t even be talking about this if anyone other than the _________ line and Draper were scoring.  But no one is.  At least no one healthy.  Samuelsson’s doing his best to avoid the official goat label. He’s got 4 points, but he’s also got an issue.

Kulfan

“He’s got a minor thing and we don’t want it to become a major thing,” Babcock said.

I’m sure Samuelsson’s pleased Uncle Mike emphasized the fact that his groin is minor, rather than major.  Not sure how sensitive the Swedes are about that kind of thing, you know.  Thankfully, offline, Babcock stressed he didn’t mean anything by the reference.

MBCQOTD
“Look, it’s minor.  Mine? Major. I mean that...Major.  Sam’s? Minor.  Not sure of the rest of the boys.  But I’ll tell you this. It’s not good for the club if a players’ is more major than mine.  We’re guys.  Major and minor mean something in the room.  Mine’s major.”

Thanks Mike.

Back to balanced scoring.  Thankfully, Grigorenko’s lighting it up down in GR, right?  Oh...sorry.  Zero points in three games.  But hey, I’m sure his production will switch from minor to major when he gets back to Detroit.  When?  Try next week.

Khan(!)

“Jimmy Nill (Red Wings assistant GM) has seen the first three games. The question continues to be the tempo of the game,” Holland said. “Part of it is conditioning, part of it is his ability to play at a higher tempo with speed.

He’s played OK, (but) he’s a guy that has to get points, that’s what he brings to the table. Next week we’re going to bring him back, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Yep.  That’s what he said, “next week.” Here’s some advice, which I’m sure will be heeded.  Don’t bring the kid back up here and stick him with Maltby and Drake, or Kopecky and Draper.  If the intent is to finally make a determination as to what he’s going to bring to the table, split up the ________ line and give him to Datsyuk for a few games.

Khan(!) must have had a serious sit-down with Kenny because he also mentions the fact that the organ-I-zation hasn’t ruled out a Markov return, but not at his 3.5 asking price.

“Nothing’s changed from their part, and nothing’s changed from our part,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “I like our defense, we think Derek Meech can play, we think Kyle Quincey is close, we’re happy with Jonathan Ericsson. We got cap space (between $4 and $5 million). Ideally, we’d like to put the money into forwards.” A goal-scoring winger or a second-line center would be their top priorities.

Hey, uh, Kenny?  I’m thinking that goal-scoring winger? Yeah, you’ll probably see him tonite.  Another hint?  Big guy. Violent.  Ring any bells?  He was, um, a Wing for a little while.  Put that one in the “missed the boat” category.  More specific? We should have signed Bertuzzi.  Just sayin’.

Perhaps not.  Bertuzzi was hit by Boogaard (totally misspelled, i know) in their game with Minnesota and may be out with a possible concussion.

(At least, according to latimes.com this morning.)

Hmmmmm....2 Swedes and a Russian, whose ability to “toy” with opposing defenses is obscene. The best I could come up with in the 30 seconds I had to ponder the matter was the “Russian Porn” line. Not that I have any familiarity with that topic. Just sayin’.

Posted by dougie  on  10/15  at  08:31 AM

And 3 seconds after I hit the “send” button, I thinks to meself, “That name was soooooo obvious, someone probably said it before.” Did we have this discussion last season? I can’t remember what I had for breakfast anymore, much less a few months back!

I’ve been pushing for dats-z-homer line to get a name for a couple days in the KK forums.  If you say “dats-z-homer” whenever Holmstrom scores in an Italian accent not only is it fun, but it annoys wives, and is statistically accurate.

As far as free cap room, as much as I wanted Bert back, he is over-paid.  I still think a trade deadline return of the prodigal son Federov is in the cards.

the ‘Babble’ just goes on and on:

“We got a lot of penalties; I have no idea why,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.

The Flying Circus

I like that a lot, not sure it will catch, but I like it a lot.

Penalties remind me of last season. Hopefully they’ll follow the pattern then, and cut down on penalties after about the 15 game mark (sooner, would be welcomed!), and then we’ll see the defense tighten up as a result.

I was glad to see Bert come last year, but his performance was poor. I think he’s going to be injury-prone the rest of his career when it comes to his back/neck/head, and even when he’s healthy, I think he’s a shell. He used to have confidence and muscle through the toughest defense. Now I see a guy that when healthy could score 25, or even 30 goals, but just looks shy and timid when a tough defender tries to come down on him.

Well, Atlanta is heading South in more ways than one, maybe we could get Hossa?  Pipe dream, I know, but with snow on the mountains this morning, I was thinking a Christmas present would be good about now. smile

Is Brian Rolston resigned yet? bring the Flint boy home.  He would be a great fit with Fil and Huds.  Just have him get up and use his great shot.  Although minny will most likely be in contention.

Thanks for the return of the MBCQOTD - today’s was a thing of beauty.

Swedish Sandwich Line?  ‘Cuz, y’know, Dats is the center...as long as you don’t listen to what Babblecock says about him and Z deciding who plays center.

The Low-Round Draft Pick All-Stars?

Two Kids and An Older Bulldog Line?  Anything that makes Hully nostalgic can’t be that bad.

Ze-Dat-Ho?  Also useful in Denver.

The Dizzy Whores line?
HAHAHAHAHA!

Well, it is the new NHL, MIKEY, and your team was the visiting favorite.

Since my cable company is screwing around again this year and doesn’t have their contract with Center Ice done yet, I don’t get to see the games.  I just watched the highlights from last night online and I have two thoughts:

1 - holy @#*$ the DZH Line is amazing
2 - holy @#*$ some of the other players better figure out how to score

Some more statistical analysis, in the Algebra Is Fun category…

On pace for:

Zetterberg: 54 G, 109 A, 163 PTS
Datsyuk: 13 G, 82 A, 95 PTS
Holmstrom: 68 G, 27 A, 95 PTS

And a few more… Draper: 54 G… Lidstrom: +95

Posted by BobTheZee  on  10/15  at  02:15 PM

W2, I actually meant “See That Whore,” but I like yours better.

Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Cruisin' the City of Industry  on  10/16  at  04:51 AM

Zetterberg: 54 G, 109 A, 163 PTS

keeping up that pace would be quite the feat.  would that be a record (163 points)?

Posted by Paul from Miami Beach  on  10/17  at  10:39 PM

not even close: Great one had 92 goals and 212 pts.... someone can crosscheck (get it) the numbers…
