Vomit.
Bad news on the Johan Franzen injury front: The Red Wings just announced that the big forward will be out a minimum of four months after sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Thursday’s 3-2 win over Chicago.General manager Ken Holland said the team has recalled Justin Abdelkader from Grand Rapids (AHL). Holland said he doesn’t know how or when Franzen was injured. “I’m a little surprised because he finished the game,’’ Holland said. “He said after the game the knee was bothering him and didn’t know exactly when he injured it. The doctor said it was before he scored his goal.

And here I was all day thinking I might not get to see Ericsson play tomorrow night. Time to step it up boys!

This is my line combos, as I posted on the main page post:
Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom/Cleary
Leino - Filpulla - Williams
Cleary - Helm - Bertuzzi/Abdelkader/Eaves
4th line is Draper with two of: Abdelkader, Eaves, Maltby, Holmstrom, May
I don’t want to break up the Filpulla line as they have been so good. Cleary and Helm worked really well together last season, have them be our third line nucleus (unless Homer starts sucking large and Cleary needs to play in the Circus).
Don’t sign anyone Kenny, don’t trade anyone either. The Emperor suggests bringing in Shanahan, but unless it is for around a half-million a season, I wouldn’t bother. Make the kids hungry and have to fight for their place in the Central. We could use the grit and tenacity come the postseason.

You HAVE to re-unite Datsyuk and Zetterberg. C’Mon Uncle Mike…

The Mule should be banned from playing against the Hawks in October. This is getting *#$%@& ridiculous.

You make a compelling argument, Voox. I really don’t want to break up the third line either, but making them the second line makes good sense right now.
I keep Holmstrom on the top line for a little while, but as the season wears on, he gets shuffled to fourth-line minutes and time as a power play specialist. This makes Homer mad for the playoffs; mad Homer is good Homer. Cleary plays on the third line with Helm and Bertuzzi until he has to be promoted to the Circus, at which point Eaves takes on third line duties.
Right now, the fourth line of Draper, Maltby, and May stays together, but I want Eaves playing two games for every one that May plays on that line during this four-month stint without Franzen. We should know by the middle of December whether or not Eaves is ready to be a third-liner. If he isn’t by that time (which is right about when I think Homer’s minutes start slipping and all these line changes happen), then we panic. I mean, in that case, Homer can always play on the third line, but Holmstrom and Bertuzzi don’t strike me as the ideal linemates for Darren Helm.

Damnit, Voox… you had to remind Jimmy?
I’d rather he spewed his trite over here than on the main page. At least this is a more appropriate forum for it. We know enough to ignore him while we watch him repeatedly make himself sound stupid.
Posted by VooX from Behind the Bar in the Hasek Club Car on 10/09/09 at 03:51 PM ET
And nice response to my line combos, J.J., I think your points about Eaves are bang-on. We give him a chance to prove his mettle. And, of course, an Angry Chipmunk is a dangerous Chipmunk in the post season.

Jimmy had to leave, just in case you are wondering.

This is really, really bad news.
I say get Shanny back in here.
He always plays well the first few months of a season, and he is a gunner.

F**k. Can’t they just tape his knee up and give him a shot before each game?

Back in 4 months....sort of….
After torn ACL, a player is usually 1 step behind normal for about a year and a half.
Think about it and remember Stevie after his first, and Cheli too.
Same with back surgery,Sorry, 19, but that’s just the way it is..
and we might as well start lowering our expectations for when he returns.Posted by HockeyTownTodd from Madmen is in my 19th year on 10/09/09 at 04:55 PM ET
I like the idea of Shanahan,
I think his contract is 1 mil, but if he is called back up and claimed on waivers it is half price and the Devils have to pick up the other half. The cap hit…? I don’t have a clue.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd on 10/09/09 at 04:06 PM ET
F**k. Can’t they just tape his knee up and give him a shot before each game?
Because we signed him to a long-term deal, we’d like him to stick around for a few more seasons, that’s why. There was a reason the Captain refused pain shots while playing on his bad knees.
1) He didn’t want to do more damage.
2) He’s the frigging man, tougher than Chuck Norris and Kryptonite combined.

Hey, there’s always Floppa. (I know, I know ... whore mouth shut.)
But as I said in the previous post, I’m weirdly not freaking out yet. Let’s give it a month and see how the team responds. Then again, I’m probably trying to be calm because I know I can’t drink, and the thought of panicking on the Stress Train while I’m stone cold sober is horrifying in the extreme.

I thought Mules didn’t have ACL’s
Good Lord he is a monster, though. A friggin torn ACL has many people crying like a little bitch. I spent the last few days sitting through conveniently timed lower limb ligament lectures.
Mule: “Ugh, my knee itches…. oh look a puck to finish”
I don’t doubt he could be ready to play sooner than 4, but I hope to God he lets it heal as fully as possible before he starts playing again.
Posted by MarkK from Maryland on 10/09/09 at 04:23 PM ET
Trying to think positive:
-no Mule (vomit) means less 4 millions on the cap
-Lilja will be able to come back when ready
-Franzén will come back with a proportiional salary, so we won’t have to dump anyone
-I’m with VooX, don’t sign or trade. Unless The Jimmah! sucks until the deadline
-we’re deep, we know it
-a banged up Mule in the playoffs still can score 10 goals in 20 games
Now excuse me, I’m going to a psychologist.

By the power in my pants, I command Fil to score 30 goals, Dats to hit 100 points, Z do the same, Williams get 20 and Bertuzzi get 20.
Don’t worry guys, penis power will totally shift the universe into proper alignment.

Well at least Abdelkader will be up full time. I think he, Helm, and Cleary need to be the third line. Put Z and Dats back together with Bertuzzi (who will be a little better than Homer I think) and get Eaves into the lineup.

Good call. The injury does provide the cap space to pick up Biron or someone like him if/when Jimmy fails. Thin silver lining on a big fugging cloud.

Well, Tick tock has said they’re gonna look internally for the temporary fix, not outside the organ-I-zation. So no to a Shanny return.
Man, this *#$%@& sucks. It sucks more than it did when I first found out about it, because now I have no idea what the Wings are gonna do as far as line combos. We have no oneready to fill that bruising, clutch scoring power forward role.
Hank-Dangle-Homer
Willy-Wally-J Will
Buckets-Taz-Eaves/TuzziKamon
Draper-Gator-Maltby/May
That’s gotta be what Uncle Mike does. What’s he going to do if he keeps Dangle and Hank apart?
Wally-Dangle-Homer
TuzziKamon-Hank-Buckets
Willy-Taz-J Will
Draper-Gator-Maltby/Eaves/May
I’m actually wondering why Gator is up here. He’s going to be stuck on the fourth line, and possibly even scratched for good chunks of time, which is exactly what the team didn’t want for him this season. The only thing I can think of is he’s up here in case Taz can’t go tomorrow, so he can fill the fourth line role. But once Taz comes back into the line up, I really don’t see a need for him to be on the team. Our four centres are either Dangle, Hank, Taz and Draper, or Dangle, Wally, Taz and Draper. Gator’s better off in GR getting first line minutes.

I don’t think Yabatheskater will stay with the Wings for long, since he won’t have any space.
What worries me (even more) is the Yearly Holmstrom Injury, Datsyuk’s 10 Scoreless Games In A Row, Hank’s Back & Groin, Helmer’s Shoulder, TuzziKamon Mummyness, and other bad, bad things.
Shit happens, but the shit started earlier this season. And Hudler, we have the cap space now!

Ugh. I will however have to agree with what Bella said in the last thread about it forcing the team to improve defensive focus. If it means more ice time for Helm, then that’s good. Gotta look at the positives. At least this didn’t happen in April.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on ACL injuries and I gotta say, I don’t see how the team even thinks it’ll be possible for him to be back in four months. Eight months seems to be the general consensus I’ve found. I’m not a doctor though, I just play one on the interwebs.
It’ll be a huge boost when we get our Mule for the SCF though.

Crap, I was going to post how this season was going to test the depth of each franchise in the Central Division due to the competitiveness bringing out intense physical competition each night, such as the Wings had to do to get the W last night.
Players are going to get hurt and abused this year in the Central, and any team that enters the playoffs healthy will be very lucky.
Then this, F Me!

I was driving when I caught the tail end of the talk about this on XM. I knew it was Franzen, I knew he was out for some amount of time, and that was enough to require a detour to a liquor store. Couldn’t shotgun it at the time, but I wanted to be ready for tomorrow’s game. Still internet friends?

Babcock likes to talk about the way these kinds of situations provide opportunities for others to step up. So now I hope we get a chance to see what Leino can do on the second line and on the power play. He seems to have some of the same knack for hanging onto the puck and finding the open man that Happy had. This could be his chance to shine…or to fall flat on his face. I’m betting on the former rather than the latter.
This also is Bert’s chance to be the #1 “power guy” on the team. He looks like he’s in shape and (if last night is any indication) he looks like he’s ready to be responsible in the defensive zone as well. Tomorrow’s game will be the perfct opportunity for him to prove Kenny was right to sign him.
And what better chance for Eaves to get more ice time…and maybe on a higher line than he would have. What if Mule’s injury actually accelerates the emergence of “Dan Cleary, V.2.0”? Wouldn’t that be a nice surprise.
More cap-space flexibility. More opoortunities for others to shine. More chances for everyone to step up their effort and commitment. Why, it’s almost as if Mule going down is a really, really good thing. Yah, you’re right. It sucks big time.
Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids on 10/09/09 at 06:20 PM ET
Cleary-Datsyuk-Homer
J Will-Zetterberg-Leino
Abdelkader -Filppula-Tuzzi
Maltby -Drapes-Eaves(/May)
and when Helm gets back….abdelkader back down to gr….and helm takes his place on the third line playing wing….How bout that…..I really don’t like putting dats and z on the same line when we need depth through all four.
