About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

Does confusion make you sad?  When you read words like “enigma” and phrases like “Thanks Gary. Ass”, do you wonder why mean people speak in languages you don’t understand?  Fret no longer friend!  The A2Y Glossary will bring you great joy and enlightenment.

How Others View The A2Y 19

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site.”
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”

1855We’ll do the liveblog on this post tonite.

Man...getting old sucks.  And no, that’s not a lead-in for a Chelios story.  I’m talking New Year’s recovery time.  Pepe Lopez appeared again, and the results were not good.

Yes, I DVR’d the loss to our little sisters from St. Louis.  Yes, I watched it yesterday morning.  No, I don’t recall much of it.  No, our lead diminishing to a mere 19 in the Central does not have me concerned.

How will the Wings respond?  Oh, I think they’ll be just fine...especially considering the return of the future captain.  Fortunately, he returns to a team that appears much more balanced than it was prior to his injury.  Uncle Mike’s splitting up the Circus.

Sipple

“I’ve been talking about it forever and no one ever wants me to do it,” Babcock said of splitting up Zetterberg and Datsyuk. “To me, for us to be the team we’re capable of being, in the end they gotta play apart. But we gotta have enough development of our players so they can. They gotta have guys to play with.”

Agreed and agreed.  No way he was going to put Datsyuk and Zetterberg back together with the way Hudler, Filppula and--yes--Samuelsson have been playing.  The potential is too great for two dominant lines.  Zetterberg-Hudler-Samuelsson/Datsyuk-Cleary-Filppula.  Name a player among those six that isn’t on fire.  Oh, and Datsyuk?

He’s been named the NHL’s “second star” for the month of December.

Datsyuk ranked third among NHL scorers for the month with 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) and posted a +11 rating in 15 games. He recorded points in 11 of 14 games, including two goals and an assist against Montreal Dec. 4, three-assist games against Minnesota Dec. 7, Washington Dec. 17 and St. Louis Dec. 26 and the game-winning goal and two assists against Phoenix Dec. 29. Datsyuk is second in scoring on the Red Wings and ninth among all NHL players with 49 points (15 goals, 34 assists) in 40 games.

Mark Hartigan’s been sent back to Grand Rapids, as a result of Zetterberg’s return.  Homer’s almost ready, and Maltby should be back within two weeks as well.
Khan(!)

“Back’s feeling a lot better, the main thing now is just getting the legs and the lungs back into game shape and the only way you can do it on the ice and getting into some games,’’ Maltby said. “Hopefully about a week of practice and then I’d like to get into a game sometime definitely in the next two weeks.’

And, just as the Wings are getting healthier, Bubba Sr. continues to win despite some fairly significant injuries of their own.

Ft. Worth Star Telegram

Jussi Jokinen is out two to three weeks with a sprained knee; the Stars have been successful filling holes left by Jere Lehtinen and Philippe Boucher, and they’ll need that again.

“With injuries to key people, we’re asking others to step in and do the job. But they can’t do it alone,” coach Dave Tippett said. “It has to be a team effort. That’s the way we’ve been successful in the past, and that’s how we’re going to be successful in the future. Simple as that.”

Worse news for the Stars, Sergei Zubov has been scratched with an “upper body injury.”

Finally, A2Y favorite photog--David Guralnick from the Detroit News--posted an up close and personal look at a nice battle wound to his eye...and claims it was work-related.

Guralnick, Detroit News

I’ve been shooting the Red Wings for nine years now with only one scratch to show for it (from Homer’s skate). And then the college kids come into town for the GLI tournament at the Joe over the weekend and one of them confuses my head for the puck. I was even wearing a helmet at the time. Six stiches later (thank you Dr. Colucci), here I am.

Sure thing Dave.  When you’re describing facial wounds to wives and bosses (especially wounds that occur on New Year’s) always make it an on-the-job injury.  No one believes it but it sounds better.  This one time in Pusan…

Nevermind.  Live blog here tonite.

Actually hoping I get the Dallas feed tonite.  It’s been about two years since I’ve heard Darryl Reaugh call a game and he’s always good.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  08:19 PM

That bastard Gabriel got me sick! I have to sit curled up while listening to the game...damn…

Zubov, according to most, has a hand injury. Where did you get the “upper body” thing Chief?

Posted by srt  on  01/02  at  08:24 PM

Evening SRT. Got it from Captain Khan(!).

For Dallas, defenseman Sergei Zubov is out with an undisclosed upper body injury.

Hail to Millen. Totally off topic, but the Offensive rookie of the year and runner up were both passed over by the Lions in the draft.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  08:30 PM

Typhoid Gabriel. I like it.

Interesting pre-game show with Stevie Y on FSN. He got a call mid-interview on his mobile and mentioned “It’s probably Kenny, wanting me to go down and give Babs a few last minute instructions.”

Wonder how that comment will go over with the coach.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  08:32 PM

Ken Daniels (Wings feed..obviously) just said that if the Wings win tonite it will the earliest they’ve ever reached 30 wins.

Not well.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  08:33 PM

Murphy between the benches: confirmed Zubov’s injury is a hand ailment.  Going with three rookies on the blue line.  Nice.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  08:35 PM

Ah yes. Turco at the Joe.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  08:39 PM

Don’t mention getting old.

I have a stupid birthday on Friday. shock

This one hasn’t exactly been a barn-burner so far…

Dom’s looking stylish on the bench with his Gatorade towel around his neck and stuffed into his jersey.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI  on  01/02  at  08:52 PM

Kronwall...that was a frigging blast.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  08:54 PM

This is one likely reason Downey is so popular in Dallas.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI  on  01/02  at  08:55 PM

Please show that hit soon.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI  on  01/02  at  08:56 PM

Intense 30 seconds there.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  08:56 PM

The crowd’s sure come alive in the last few seconds here.

Looking down typing that last comment when Cleary scored. Nice shot, though, Dan.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI  on  01/02  at  08:56 PM

For all you guys and gals that feel like crap for one reason or another, I got one for yas… I had to pass up free tix for tonight.  Don’t ask why because the excuse could be considered lame.  Just know that it could always be worse.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  08:57 PM

I’m liking all this Kronwall physicality.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI  on  01/02  at  08:59 PM

Dammit. I want to see that frigging hit.  Was that Franzen that hit the post? that was a blast too.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:00 PM

That was an extremely loud shot off the post.

That bastard Gabriel got me sick! I have to sit curled up while listening to the game...damn…

He must have had a computer virus, then.  Hee-hee.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  09:00 PM

You’re going to have to tell us why Slinger.  Don’t leave us hanging.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:00 PM

classy move by the wings/little caesars honoring modano tonite.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:04 PM

Okay Chief, but like I said, it’s pretty lame. Ya might want to make the kids leave the room for this one…

The wife was making dinner and I was looking forward to it all day.  (our first crack at “marinating"). It was pretty good, if that helps.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  09:07 PM

Ugh, that physically hurt.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI  on  01/02  at  09:08 PM

That’s not lame.  I think it sounds sweet.

No wonder Turco doesn’t win much against the Wings.  With that pass he looks like he has a goalie death wish.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  09:13 PM

Slinger, that’s not lame...especially if that means she didn’t move out after all?

So I got pulled away...did they ever show the Kronwall hit(s)?

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  09:14 PM

Anyone almost lose their dinners seeing Lidstrom bringing the puck up ice through about three Stars?  I know he’s a puck mover, but really, Nick, not necessary.  Let Hudler do that for you.

Turco...the Joe’s in his kitchen.  What a tool of a move there.  Lucky.

Downey and Ott: guaranteed.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:14 PM

Slinger: not lame at all.  I’ll tell my wife about it and earn points just by mentioning it.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:15 PM

All:  working on a little surprise for future live blogs.  Stay tuned but it should be cool.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:18 PM

A surprise, eh?

Uh-oh.  smile

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  09:22 PM

Gabe, we both realized that 8 years is nothing to throw away without at least trying to work on it.  So far so good.  Although, after telling her that I passed up the tix, she said, “ya should’ve went.” Right… I’m not even going there!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  09:26 PM

Fair warning Chief… nobody likes me with a webcam!  wink

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  09:28 PM

Hullie’s looking large.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:28 PM

Slinger - Good luck to both of you working it out.

(And I’m glad the dinner was good, too.)

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  09:31 PM

Dub...no chance of a webcam. I’ve seen the video of myself from new years eve and that was enough to squash that idea.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:32 PM

Thanks Baroque, we should be good for a couple years or so.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  09:36 PM

Glad to hear it, Slinger. And yeah, you made the right choice, no matter what she says.

Good call on no goal. Nice try though.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  09:36 PM

Now that was too easy for Franzen.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  09:39 PM

What a shift from Downey.  Hometown hero in the making right there.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  09:40 PM

Wow! Downey is starting to make Uncle Mike’s job a little more difficult.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  09:40 PM

Downey is an interesting player to watch.  He skates much better than the stereotypical tough guy, and has a much better sense of when to get involved in a fight and when to ignore an invitation because it will only get the other team pumped up than a lot of other players.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  09:48 PM

whoa… OZZY!!! you da man! whew!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  09:59 PM

I think Osgood’s heart rate just went up a tad right there.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  09:59 PM

Weird game.  Osgood’s getting stronger.  Last time Datsyuk left the ice it looked like he was hurt. Haven’t seen him return yet.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:01 PM

I’d say Datsyuk’s ok.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:02 PM

I think you’re right, Chief. Or he can fake it really good!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  10:12 PM

My 2-year-old just walked in, looked at Larry Murphy on my TV, and said “Murph’s hair looks better this year, Daddy.”

I have a little tear in my eye…

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  10:15 PM

Don’t let him get a look at Engblom Gabe.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:16 PM

That deserves a happy meal, Gabe.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  10:22 PM

Her, not him, but that’s a good point.  She won’t sleep for weeks.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  10:22 PM

Drake! Makes up for that boneheaded shot by Franzen.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  10:24 PM

Downey gets a point and Drake gets a goal.

What a bizarre game.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  10:25 PM

Woo...first one for Drake.  Good point from Murphy: “see what happens when he plays with Zetterberg?” I was just going to type (before the goal) that Franzen’s miss (and cleary’s from the first) would hopefully not come back to haunt us.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:26 PM

you called it Chief!

wait… that’s it?  now I know how my wife feels! mad

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  10:30 PM

Can’t really fault Ott for that hit, but I would’ve liked to have seen something more from Drake.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  10:30 PM

The Drake is an assist away from a GH Hatrick.

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  01/02  at  10:32 PM

That’s what happens when you hit Nick Lidstrom.

Now all Drake needs is an assist!

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  10:32 PM

My bad, I thought it was Downey.  ‘game aint over yet. There’s still hope!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  10:35 PM

Coming back from the commercial Homer’s supposed to tell us what he’s done that everyone thought impossible.  Sit out for a month because of a “bruise” perhaps?

A “deep bruise” to the same knee.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:37 PM

I was going to correct you slinger, but thought better of it.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:37 PM

Frigging Datsyuk. Amazing.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:42 PM

Not to nitpick, but what exactly was Ellis hoping to do by kicking at the puck?  If only he had a tool with more reach...a stick of some sort.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  10:44 PM

Classic, Gabe.

Kopecky with an injured left hand.  Hartigan or Homer for Saturday.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  10:49 PM

Good win, I’m glad it picked up there from the start.

Baroque, as there’s no game on Friday, happy birthday!

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/02  at  10:53 PM

Downey. Player of the game. I know it’s cold outside but I don’t think hell is frozen yet.  Way to go Downey!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  10:54 PM

I’m betting Homer’s back on Saturday Slinger. And agreed, that was a classic from Gabe.  Another big win against an “elite” out of division opponent...following a nap loss to someone in the Central.  Weird.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  01/02  at  10:55 PM

That’s it till Saturday.

Take the edge off those skates boys, you’re headed for Crappy ice.

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  01/02  at  10:55 PM

Oh that’s right… Happy Birthday Baroque. As I’m sure Chief would agree, beware of Pepe Lopez!
Have a happy, healthy and safe one!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  01/02  at  10:57 PM

Thanks, Gabriel.  smile

38 years old.  Good god, that sounds old.

(Although when I complain about feeling old to my mom, I get absolutely no sympathy.  I wonder whay that is?)

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  10:59 PM

And thanks from you too, Slinger.

Don’t worry about Pepe Lopez - my baby sister has a birthday on Saturday (she is eight years younger) and the family is getting together for cake and ice cream.

Goodnight, everybody!

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  01/02  at  11:03 PM

Great win by the Wings.

Happy B-day, ‘Roque!  Hope you get spoiled rotten.

Posted by SYF from Las Vegas, NV  on  01/03  at  12:02 AM

And just to keep things honest, Bruce MacLeod brought up a great point:

-- This is probably the most dominant regular-season Red Wings team since the 1995-96 season. The stat that the team is throwing out there that this year’s team has 30 wins through 41 games and the 95-96 team had just 29 (on its way to a league-record 62) is bogus though. Four shootout wins so far this season means that by 95-96 rules, the Red Wings have 26 wins this season. That puts these Wings behind the 1995 team through 41 games as well. Still, a monumentally great season thus far.

Sorry ‘bout raining on the parade but we still have a long season to go.

grin

Posted by SYF from Las Vegas, NV  on  01/03  at  02:42 AM

SYF, it doesn’t matter. Does anyone seriously care if the Wings surpass that record?  If I remember, regular season wins didn’t mean jack in the Conference Finals.

I don’t care if the Wings slide through the rest of the season picking up only enough points to secure the 8th seed in the West. As long as they bring home the Cup, all is forgiven and forgotten.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  01/03  at  12:24 PM

Ah I love seeing the Evil Empire Jr. get beat down by the Wings.  Much joy in my house last night!  Still hoping to be able to participate in a liveblog one of these nights.  Sigh.

Baroque, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  38 isn’t so bad.  I just turned 40 and I get no sympathy from my Mom either.  Of course my daughter delights in saying, “In only 10 years you will officially be an artifact!” Doesn’t matter, I’m having fun playing “Guitar Hero III” and refusing to grow up.
