Red Wings-Kings live blog: bad ice, dangerous opponent

The Detroit Red Wings will face off against the Los Angeles Kings shortly (10:30 PM EST, FSD/FS West/WXYT/NHL Network) minus Johan Franzen and Brian Rafalski (there’s an actual Kings lineup update in there, too), and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As far as I’m concerned, the ice at the Staples Center is nothing less than dangerous at times, surpassing the slush at the ACC in Toronto and the rinks in Phoenix, Miami, New York and Anaheim as the worst surface of gravel pretending to be ice in the NHL.
I’m not exactly a fan of Jarrett Stoll and his stick-bouncing faceoff cheating tactic or the physical Kings, either, but the Wings have to take their Dustin Penner-reinforced opponent very seriously given the tightness of the Western Conference standings, because if the Wings fare poorly against the Kings and the rest of this week’s opponents (the Ducks, Sharks, and Coyotes), our Wings might not just be playing potential playoff opponents—they might find themselves swimming among that mass of teams for whom each game is already a playoff-determining battle.
Live blog away.

Tonight’s game is an NHL Network game. It’s blacked out on Center Ice and GameCenter Online because the NHL Network swiped it.

My cable company finally started carrying NHLN in HD… WHEE! Here’s hoping they carry the FSD feed.
Posted by RedMenace from the darkest recesses on 02/28/11 at 11:28 PM ET
I’m waiting on Alpha Tango to get started. I sure as hell hope it’s FSD. I cannot take Versus at the moment. Watching a smug jackass like Edzo is enough to make me diarrhea flow like a river.

Starters and scratches:
For Los Angeles:
Brad Richardson-Anze Kopitar-Wayne Simmonds
Willie Michell-Drew Doughty
In goal: Jonathan Quick
For Detroit:
Danny Cleary-Pavel Datsyuk-Jiri Hudler
Nicklas Lidstrom-Brad Stuart
In goal: Jimmy Howard
The Wings scratched Patrick Eaves (lower body injury), Brian Rafalski (back spasms) and Johan Franzen (home with baby); the Kings scratched Dustin Penner (immigration issues), Kevin Westgarth (don’t need a goon tonight) and Davis Drewiske (?).

For once I don’t have to leave work early to catch a game. Lately I’ve been rushing home usually just in time to watch the boys go down 0-2. Maybe we can try a different approach tonight.

Even if you get stuck with the king’s feed, you still get to listen to a HOF’er. Bob Miller, the King’s play by play man, is in the HOF as an announcer. He is as good as Brian Hayward of the Ducks is awful
