Red Wings Fan Gives Up

I have some great news for all Abel 2 Yzerman supporters—Bill has finally seen the light and decided to become a Canucks fan. He just loves Luongo and couldn’t deny his true calling any longer.
It’s my hope he’ll soon be writing remarkable essays on C&B, with titles like “The Day Maltby Cried” and “Wow. How could I NOT Support a Team with Swedish Twins?” and (my personal favorite) “The Cheese in Vancouver is Much Tastier.”
P.S. All of this is a total lie, of course. Bill just wanted me to mention that he’s traveling this week so his pro-Wings rantings will be sparse. Bah.

Ok, we will just think of IWO as a ‘Nucksfan
until he returns.

“...we will just think of IWO as a ‘Nucksfan until he returns.”
Oh boy. I think the Sailor Boy is going to be a bit grumpy with me about this post…
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 11/05/07 at 03:46 PM ET
AlanaH, once again--as you’ll see in a moment--you’re in over your head. There was a reason I sent an email to PAUL this morning, and not you, asking him to post a short message letting people know I’ll be giving the blog minimal attention the next three days.
I see you’ve abused the administrator privelege in the A2Y control panel to try and spread your bitter venom. Admittedly, it was funny.
Here’s something funnier...I’ve gone into Canucks and Beyond and placed a minor edit in one of your last four posts. No real need for me to tell you which one right now. That’s not important. Just suffice it to say, the hidden feelings you’ve had for Kirk Maltby have surfaced for all to see.
Happy hunting.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 11/05/07 at 10:58 PM ET
HAH… The evil genius strikes again....
p.s. Cheif, seriously, what the heck did you edit cause I can’t find it....
Posted by srt on 11/05/07 at 11:30 PM ET
Nice try, Sailor Boy—but you’re deluded if you think I’m hunting through my posts to find where you scribbled with your new set of crayons.
Just go back and fix whatever it is. And then, I promise you, I’ll adjust those two small edits I just did to that post of yours from a day, or two, (or three? four?) ago. You know, the one about… (Oh, never mind. There’s “No real need for me to tell you right now...")
So go fix my post, and we can both walk away.
Remember: if you think back about a month or so, you’ll recall that I did owe you one… so you sorta had this coming.
Couldn’t ya handle a little payback?
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 11/05/07 at 11:45 PM ET
This thread is further evidence that not only can the Canucks not score on the ice, but their fans are incapable of scoring off it, too.
Posted by HockeyinHD on 11/06/07 at 06:29 AM ET
.....rantings will be sparse.
Reminds of that qoute by Inigo Montoya from the movie Princess Bride “You keep using that word . . . I do not think it means what you think it means”
Rantings will be “non-existent” would be more appropriate.
We are starving here Chief phone one in!!
Posted by Rumbear from Sunnywithnosmokeinthesky Diego on 11/09/07 at 12:37 PM ET
You never have to prompt IWO to phone one in.
Posted by HockeyinHD on 11/09/07 at 06:32 PM ET
While we’re waiting, just thought I would bring something up. Didn’t Chief go on record during pre-season saying 40 goals for Homer this year?
According to the stats at TSN, looks like he’s on pace for 46. I’m a little creeped out by Duke’s prognostication.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 11/10/07 at 02:05 PM ET
I think he also pegged Fil for 70 points.
Posted by HockeyinHD on 11/10/07 at 08:40 PM ET
is no one watching the games and chatting on here anymore? or where is the location?
Posted by bhinde on 11/11/07 at 06:55 PM ET
2 Hawks’ goals were scored Sunday after Lilja broke his sticks. I say he should use a wooden stick. Heck, he never scores anyway.
Posted by w2j2 on 11/12/07 at 09:57 AM ET
Vancouver is 3-0 since IWO joined the ‘nuckerheads.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd from hockeytown on 11/12/07 at 04:14 PM ET
I know it’s not really his fault that his sticks broke, but can I make Lilja the goat again? Pleaaaseeee.....
Oh, from Snapshots, two juicy quotes from Lang:
“The first TV game and especially against the Wings, the much-hated Wings, and we played a great game.”
-Much hated? Have we actually given this guy a spark of passion? That smiling fool almost buys flowers for the other team.
“It’s nice to beat the team that was on a hot streak like the Wings,” said Lang, who played for Detroit the last two seasons. “Probably at the moment the best team in the league, and they came into our arena really smoking hot, confident and playing great hockey, and we were able to put them away.”
-Yeah sorry, but we barely got by Nashville. Babbles is going to give the team a break on Monday. Isn’t the problem that they were on a long break?
I thought we played like a .600 team against Nashville and .500 against Chicago. However, I am happy to be annoyed by an opposing team; I hope this spark is fanned by Langer’s beautiful hair into sheer hatred.

In addition to fanning the flames of the Nucks’ waning fandom, I think Iwo is getting shifts on their second PP unit to boot.
In for a penny in for a pound, that ratfink turncoat traitor.
Posted by HockeyinHD on 11/12/07 at 08:57 PM ET
I remember a time when this was a hosted site. Ahhhhhh....those were the days.....
Upon reflection, I detect a disturbing trend here… first Gloveside disappears and now IWO has gone AWOL. (awolcpo?) Seems that Red Wing Bloggers have about the same lifespan as Jimmy Hoffa these days. Pre-game lunch at the Red Fox? Anyone..........
Posted by Rumbear from Sandy Eggo on 11/13/07 at 03:20 PM ET
I recently heard from the Sailor, and he will be back as soon as he finds a dock big enough for his ship.
Posted by Paul from Motown Area on 11/13/07 at 03:23 PM ET
It would be nice if he was back for the Vancouver game on Wednesday.

I bet The Sailor is gonna love that phrasing…

Nine days and counting.
Maybe when Iwo comes back we should have him pull an Albom and write up blogs for games in December, January and March to cover his next period of, er, ‘travel’.

Maybe when Iwo comes back we should have him pull an Albom and write up blogs for games in December, January and March to cover his next period of, er, ‘travel’.
Should be a breeze to come up with topics.
“Chris Chelios is really old”
“The Wings are the oldest team in the NHL”
“The Wings’ playoff hopes rest on an injury-prone Hasek”
“Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Holmstrom are all late-round steals”
“Detroit isn’t selling out, so call a town that hasn’t won anything Hockeytown because they sell more shirts”
A few permutations and that should get him through a few months.
(I think he’s actually on a ship named “Vancouver Avalanche” and was sent to sick bay with a severe case of facial tics.”
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/14/07 at 12:56 PM ET
There has to be poker on those ships..probably forgot all about hockey..Nice one HD, maybe we should start refering to him as ‘Mitch’.
Baroque..you forgot “deadwings”.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd from hockeytown on 11/14/07 at 02:18 PM ET
Spot on Baroque..
I would offer up
“Limping in to the playoffs: Will the Red Wings Sign Forsberg?”
Posted by Rumbear from Sandy Eggo on 11/14/07 at 03:07 PM ET
One time my daddy told me he would be back in 2 or 3 days, and he NEVER came back
Posted by dougie on 11/14/07 at 05:12 PM ET
I thought of a couple more…
Barry Melrose (before a series): “Detroit doesn’t have enought grit or meanness to beat a big, physical team.”
Followed by Barry Melrose (after two playoff wins): “Detroit has too much skill and experience to lose this series.”
Of course, the ever-popular “No one watches on TV.” “You can’t see the puck.” “There isn’t enough scoring.” “Defensive hockey is choking the life out of the game.”
And the newer permutation, “Hockey has too many furriners for Americans to like it.”
(As though it’s so much harder to pronounce Henrik (aka Hank) Zetterberg than Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. Narrow-minded xenophobic dorks.)
Maybe we could have a few posts ready for Mitch when he gets back. Kind of a Veterans Day “thank you.”

We need to come up with a name for a Blog that’s never updated. Now, most people probably know that the term Blog is a short form of ‘Web Log’, so I’m wondering if there’s a similarly catchy deal we can come up with for Iwo.
A few starter suggestions:
Absent Author: Abthor?
Missing Writer: Wrissing? Mriter?
Extinct Essayist: Estinct?
Lapsed Bard: Bapsed?
Maybe posting after having 7 beers will turn out to be a bad idea… but I think NOT!
Posted by HockeyinHD on 11/14/07 at 08:43 PM ET
Crikey, I’m out of town for a bit and return to find the place thick with cobwebs and dustbunnies (at least they’re not Ozzie’s puckbunnies, eh?).
Ahh, but I’m sure IWO will be proud as a new father when he returns to find that his blog has been filled with so much wit and sarcasm in his absence.

What about fossil?
Something now non-living, but evidence of something that was once alive in the distant past.
(Or coprolite for a really crummy blog that isn’t updated. This one is good, so it doesn’t fall under that heading.)
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/14/07 at 09:45 PM ET

foblog: noun. A blog that has been active but is now abandoned, either permanently or temporarily. (Derived from a combination of the words fossil and blog.)
usage: Wow, that foblog hasn’t had any new posts in a week and a half.
bloggone: adjective. Term applied to a blogger who leaves his blog inactive, resulting in it being considered a foblog. Analagous to going AWOL.
usage: Where is that bloggone Iwo, anyway?
Somebody contact the OED.

Bloggone Mitch, AKA Duke, sweet willie, IWO, & ‘nuckerhead emailed (Blackberry) this morning from
New Zealand.
“Hey gramps....currently in new zealand. Be back posting soon.”
I am not sure if he is defecting, or what. Just know that NZ was tamed by Sailors ‘n Sheep.
Be good to have him back, although this thread is turning out more entertaining than most of his posts.
No hurry Mitch, we’re into the winter doldrums of the regular season & the only reason most fans watch is because they consider it foreplay.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd on 11/15/07 at 01:26 PM ET
Ahhhhhhh, the old “I’m in New Zealand excuse.” Yeah, that one worked real well with the wife last time I tried it.
Just know that NZ was tamed by Sailors ‘n Sheep.
Um, I’m confused. Who tamed whom?
Posted by Rumbear from Sandy Eggo on 11/15/07 at 05:03 PM ET
I thought they had the internet in New Zealand?
If he’s defecting, i’ll bet it’s for the beer. Or else he’s waiting until the ship docks in Australia.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/15/07 at 05:08 PM ET
I thought they had the internet in New Zealand?
They do, but it goes in the opposite direction.
Or is that the toilets?:)

Maybe New Zealand has better cheese?
Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO on 11/15/07 at 06:34 PM ET
Maybe he’ll come back if we get him a gift basket.
We could include this.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 11/16/07 at 08:17 AM ET
Somehow I think that might be the one thing that would bring him back.
Posted by Hoser from Downer Peninsula, Michigan on 11/16/07 at 08:56 AM ET
I like that Baroque. The quote “cheese is a product of its environment” really amused me for some reason.
I think the gift basket is a good idea. Come back, Chief, come back!

The quote “cheese is a product of its environment” really amused me for some reason.
It made me chuckle because I always thought cheese was a product of cows, goats, and sheep. It makes it sound like it sprouts out of the ground like mushrooms.

I’m not a therapist, but I understand that many of us need help getting through the grieving process taking place here. I had my people contact Mitch Alboms’ ghostwriter for some assistance.
Monday morning, he and I will begin “Five Bloggers You Will Meet In Heaven”, and it’s companion book, “Mommy, Do Blogs Go To Heaven?”, that will help us explain these difficult times to our children, who are our future.
Although these books can in no way fill the huge hole left by IWO’s abandonment of us, hopefully they will begin to give us some closure, so we can move on with our hockey season. Just consider it my small contribution to the process.
Posted by dougie on 11/16/07 at 10:08 AM ET
dougie...have your peoples call that ghostwriter and see if they can pen “Tuesday’s Without IWO”. Use the cheese angle and add a dog. Nothing like a good dog story.
I note this thread is up to 46 entries. Reads like a novel, a cheap one, but a novel nevertheless. Starting to feel like home here. Does this place have a liquor cabinet? Remote control? Wonder if there is a Wings game on......
Posted by Rumbear from Fog Diego on 11/16/07 at 10:54 AM ET
I’m finding myself missing all the nice polls that Duke had started for us. Man, I’m just itchin’ for a poll. Who has the poll software?? Alanah??
Maybe something along the lines of:
“Is IWOCPO one of the Five Bloggers one could reasonably expect to meet in Heaven?”
Remember,I don’t start the book until Monday.
Posted by dougie on 11/16/07 at 12:46 PM ET
Another topic for dougie: Is there an afterlife? Apparently so...This foblog is still alive, after a fashion. Furthermore, the A2Y fantasy team holds a strong 2nd place in the Poolhardy League.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

"Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on."

"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields
"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats
"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
