See Ya Sammy

Vancouver Province, via Malik

“I liked it in Detroit, I have no hard feelings for them,” Samuelsson said. “But they came up too short, and too late. In my mind they made their choices when they signed guys through the year.”

If we had a dollar for every time one of the 19 complained about Mikael Samuelsson playing the point on the Wing powerplay?  We’d be able to pay the 2.5 million he’ll be making per year in Vancouver.  In truth, Sammy provided some clutch play, a little grit and plenty of conversation.

Another inevitable departure, but a little surprising at how much he’s getting paid.  Sammy’s happy with the cash.

“Obviously that (the money) was the key, I shouldn’t lie,” Samuelsson said.

No you shouldn’t Sammy.  Discuss.

I hope that Lidstrom does take a discount, but I am not so sure he will—he could easily get top dollar on the free market, and we all know he’ll be staying put.  Next year’s July 1st won’t be so much about the forwards as it will be finding a goalie to replace Osgood (*sigh*) for the long-term.

I’m actually optimistic about the post-Osgood goaltending situation.  The Wings style of play generally doesn’t mandate a “shut down, stand on his freaking head” goalie, but just one that’s steady upstairs.  Most of the Wings goalie failings over the years haven’t been due to outright suckery, but lack of toughness, IMO.  Goalie salaries seem to be skewed high for the elites, so Holland should be able to grab a mid-range guy at a bargain.

Any chance of my favorite CMOI coming back again if Howard sucks that bad?

No, I’m not serious.

Count me in on the Dandenault bandwagon-- I hadn’t forgotten about him, as the Freep had him as a potential target, but I didn’t figure he’d still be available three days after the beginning of free agency.  If he is, then it might be an idea to seize the day, say adios to Happy via trade, and bring back Dandenault.

All of you complaining about needing to replace goals and points should remember that we can easily replace them instead with defense.  We don’t need any more goals than we had this year without Hossa and Samuelsson if we tighten up, eliminate unforced mistakes, and play good puck-possession, then we don’t have win games 6-5.  1-0 and 3-1 scorelines are much better.

Dave, Lebda may screw up less than Stuart, but he’s given far less opportunity to do so.  He plays fewer minutes against easier opposition.  It’s easy to look good when you’re not playing tough opposition.  And why do you rule out the possibility of Lidstrom lowballing himself for the good of the team?  He’s made tens of millions over his career and is set for life, easily guaranteed a high-paying position with the organization after he retires if he so desires, and has always shown himself to be a team player.  We know he’s not going anywhere, and hey-- five or six million over two years isn’t exactly chump-change-- many defensemen would love to make that much-- it’s just insanely cheap for The Perfect Human.

And Quincey with the Dive?  Oh, now I’m feeling sick…

I think M71 has already responded quite well to you, but I will say that there is nothing to appreciate about the banter of homelessness, job losses, economic troubles, and base insults that have been incessantly and cruelly slung our way since before this series began, and even after the Pens won the Cup.  The fact that we haven’t retorted in kind says everything you need to know about class.

In Dandenault’s favor, he’s a right handed shot, could easily swing between defense and forward if needed, finished a shift this past season with his arm broken in three places, and he’d be cheap.  Cheap can be good!

Detroit would be looking at a serviceable role player to eat a few minutes, not a major piece.  He’d probably do fine as a bit player.

Colorado is in full rebuild mode now, looks like.  I’m a little surprised that they got someone to take the Smyth contract off their hands - but Preissing isn’t a great contract either, from what I read, and an inexpensive, young, puck-moving defenseman in Quincey was probably the price to Colorado to make the exchange of bad contracts.  :(

The Blue Jackets have signed captain Rick Nash to an eight-year, $62.4 million contract extension, The Dispatch has learned. That’s an annual cap hit of $7.8 million.

The deal will keep Nash under contract with the Blue Jackets through the 2017-18 season.

Good on him for a well-deserved payday and on the BJs to confirming that they want to ice a winner.  Eight more years of nightmares about Nash hat tricks, here we come.

The comment about Dandaneault being too slow, mind you he’d be Sammy’s “replacement"… not exactly lightning in William Tell’s skates. And Dandaneault used to able to flat out fly, him being a little slower is still a step or 2 faster than Sammy & a helluva lot more versatile without the streaky scoring.
Grier would certainly replace the grit of Sammy and he’s solid defensively.
The unknown with Lils doesn’t help much.

Anybody else think the Kings VASTLY overpaid for Smyth from the Dive. Priessing’s not bad, and we all know what kind of powerhouse Quincey turned out to be on the LA blueline. Not to mention the fact that Smyth has to be one of the most overrated players in the game…

What do you think we have to do to lure Quincey back from the dive now? Boy howdy I wish we could have him back in replace of Lebda, Lilja, or Meech.

My favorite memory of Dandenault is his rookie year. In one of his first games he scores two goals against his idol growing up in Quebec, Patrick Roy. That was the final game Roy ever played for Montreal. Yup, young Matthew was a part of the 11-1 drubbing that cost us a few Cups and gave us a pure rival.

I’d welcome that motherfucher back immediately.

Think Dandenault would be interested in coming back?

The team has changed a lot since he left - although some of the same guys are still here, which is unusual - but he left on good terms, he was never a high-maintenance prima donna, and he hasn’t even played against Detroit all that much since he was in the Eastern conference.  And he wouldn’t be brought back as a pity signing, either, but would be expected to be a versatile role-player.

That’s also assuming he can still play.  I haven’t seen many of the Montreal games the last few years, since the conferences don’t meet that often, but he isn’t 40 years old, so I suppose he is still serviceable.

Our system is much the same, and is ideal for a well-skating defenseman who can move/pass/shoot the puck with any skill that is equal-to-or-greater than that of Lebda.  I like Lebda, but not enough to pay for him.  Bring me back Mathieu Dandenault!  The ‘Nault used to have Helm-like speed in his youth.

I’d put Dandenault at forward with Draper and Maltby, and give Gator another year of development time in GR as a top-line player, rather than limited minutes on the wing (where he’s not yet comfortable) on the fourth line.  Dands wouldn’t be expected to put up major numbers, and he’s always been a good defensive player.  Gator would be the first call-up in case of injury, and would see some playing tme this year in Detroit, but right now I think it’s far more important for the kind of player he’ll be next year (which will probably be a full season in the NHL regardless of what happens) that he spend most of this year playing monster minutes for the Griffs.

I may be somewhat of an aberration from the “19”, I am really going to miss Sammy.

He was a great scapegoat and whipping boy, and
Generally he couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with his shot,

--but--

at least he shot the friggin puck.  Sometimes, even fairly regularly, the Wings think pass first.  You could almost always count on Sammy to shoot.  No friggin telling where his shot would go - at least he shot the damn thing.

I’m going to miss Sammy, too.  It doesn’t mean I’m not happy he was able to get a better contract with a team with a fanbase that appreciates Swedes, though.  Detroit couldn’t match the offer that Vancouver was able to make.

I hope he does very well there and the fans like him.  He should be a solid 2nd line forward for them, and I’ve warned some Canucks fans that he is very streaky, so be prepared for his droughts.  They just have to be patient with Sammy and he will be a good player for them, I think.

(Some of them are just relieved that he will shoot the puck because sometimes the Sedins get so enamoured with cycling it that they never shoot - less than anyone on Detroit, even.  I told them not to worry about that, Sammy will shoot at every opportunity.) smile

I can tell you that they’re already downplaying it on NHL Home Ice XM204.  Apparently, if the NHLPA choses not to grieve the circumstance, the issue could be dead.  The guys on Hockey This Morning were already saying “Yeah they didn’t file the paperwork right, but these things happen.” Um...excuse me?  I’m getting a little sick of the league not following it’s own rules.  Don’t want the NHL to be treated like hockey is a second tier sport?  Then stop running it like it’s a college intramural program.

I’d almost be more angry with the NHLPA if this thing gets swept under the rug.  By now, you have to know the league doesn’t want anything to come of this (although I’d be willing to bet there are a few teams out there who would love it).  But, the NHLPA has to stand up for its players somehow and I don’t see how letting teams screw around with qualifying offers is any benefit to the players’ union.  This is exactly what they’re here for.

You know if any one of the players brought up the fight in the media, he’d get his way and get named a UFA.  However, it would also do irreparable damage to his reputation.  That’s exactly why we have an NHLPA, so that one player can’t get blacklisted for calling the league on its bullshit.

From a comment on The Puck Stops Here (not actually posted by him so it’s probably more credible)

here’s what a Sun-Times reporter wrote about the Hawks gaff:

The New Jersey Devils had a similar problem in 2000, when they ‘’forgot’’ to send qualifying offers to Brian Rafalski and John Madden. Rafalski was scheduled to receive $450,000 and Madden $550,000. Instead, they became unrestricted free agents, and the Devils ended up signing Rafalski to a four-year, $11 million contract and Madden to a four-year, $7 million deal.

This would just be another GLARING example of how the cherry picks it’s own rules to help or hinder whoever it sees fit.

I read somewhere this morning that by opting for arbitration another team cannot give Happy an offer sheet. Happy and the Wings can continue to negotiate and reach a deal up to the moment the arb decision is announced. Happy and the Wings each submit a proposed salary number to the arbitrator (along with briefs and oral argument), then the arbitrator picks one number or the other. If the team loses it can “opt out” and then Happy becomes a UFA.

By chosing arbitration, Happy has helped the Wings because the other teams are barred from submitting offer sheets.
