The plight of a Red Wing blogger. While most of you sat back with lukewarm, reasonably-priced, yet still satisfying beverages of pilsneric heritage and enjoyed one of the most memorable nights of your hockey-loving lives, I suffered.
You watched The Inevitable occur last night and you enjoyed it. You’ll nitpick it, because that’s what we do here...but you found it satisfying, appropriate and just. Me? I stressed.
Why? Because I’m a hockey blogger and all I could think about was how bad Christy at Behind the Jersey was going to kick my ass on this one. Oh, and she did. No one covers Yzerman like Christy. And you just knew she’d pull out all the stops on this one. Premium seats at the Joe. Video coverage. Minute-by-minute description of events. Don Cherry chance meetings. Still coverage. It’s almost unfair, and I’m more than a little bitter today.
How bitter? This bitter. I’m not even going to link to her. I won’t give her the satisfaction. Just the opposite. I refuse to direct my 13 readers to BTJ because, well, because I’m a little frigging baby who wishes he could have been there instead of watching it in a sports bar with the sound turned down and a 53-year old woman falling asleep in her 55-ounce Redskin beer mug elbowing me in the ribs every time she reached into her purse for a Camel.
So there. I hope you enjoyed the festivities Christy. Dammit.
Hey, here’s an idea. Let’s see what the big boys had to say.
We all know that if it’s a BIG STORY then Mitch and Wojo are all over it. Police escorts, firetrucks, private detectives dressed as Marvel Comics heroes clearing the path, Jack Bauer making one last perimeter check before our two world famous columnists arrive. Yes, indeedy. 19’s headed to the rafters brother. Let’s just see what the icons had to say about it.
The World Famous Mitch Albom, Star of Print, TV and Radio
It’s supposed to be the ocean that smacks against you in these parts, but on Monday it was the Southern California defense that crashed like waves against Michigan quarterback Chad Henne, over and over, chasing him, knocking him down, stuffing him into the turf, until you half-expected some “Baywatch” lifeguard to come flying out of the stands to save him.
Oh. I guess Mitch was too busy watching the Orange Bowl.
No. We won’t dwell. We won’t because that’s not what we do here. We’ll move on because you just know this story was too big for Wojo to pass up. There is no frigging way Big Bobby was going to miss this one. How could he? He’s the working man’s columnist and by God, Steve Yzerman was the working man’s Captain. Let’s see what Bob had to say. Man, I’m excited. You just know that when the big stories break Bobby’s going to bedevil us with brilliance.
Bob Wojnowski’s Coverage of 19’s Ascent to the JLA Rafters
The score was 3-3 at halftime but it already was apparent the Wolverines simply couldn’t block USC. You wonder why the coaches were slow to adjust to the constant pressure, utilizing quicker passes instead of placing Henne in unwinnable situations.
Do I need to say another thing about Detroit’s media? Ever again? Let me be very clear about this. Steve Yzerman’s jersey was retired at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena last evening and the lead columnists for both Detroit papers did NOT cover it. I started this blog one year and 4 days ago. Why? Because of garbage exactly like that. I am disgusted. Offended.
Not now. Not today. I’ll be back to that. You know I will.
Nope, not done yet. Hey Mitch, Wojo...the greatest captain in hockey history was honored last night by a city that considers him a true hero. If you want to read about it, since you didn’t cover it, I have an idea for you.
Head over to Behind the Jersey, because a UM sophomore, 20 years old and “only a blogger”, kicked your candy asses.
Again.

And she was close enough to Cheli’s Chili to take a picture and didn’t get stabbed. So she’s got that going for her. Which is nice.

This is a friggin’ crime and exactly why I stopped reading the Detroit papers this summer… why bother? I get more/better information from A2Y, BTJ, On the Wings, Kuklas, and the other blogs anyways.

IWO… Hey thanks for pointing out Christy’s blog. You’re first on my list of hockey reads (well besides Cootie’s Back Room) but you are right, she did better then both Papers in Detroit. Shame on Mitch and Wojo for not doing anything on Steve’s big day. Not even the FREEP had as much as Christy had. Sad Sad day when the Detroit Blogers out do the Detroit Newspaper Sport Pages! Keep up the good work IWO

Wow. Thanks guys for all the compliments! I went to sleep at 6am after staying up all night working on BtJ. I wanted to make sure everything was perfect, Yzerman deserved that from one of his biggest fans. And we all know, I go all out for anything Yzerman.

Wojo doesn’t surprise me, for some reason, but I thought Mitch would be all over it.
I guess they both wanted to cover the other inevitable sports result of that night. UM falling down in a bowl game was just as certain as Yzerman’s banner going up. (Either that, or they knew they couldn’t compete and didn’t want to get beat head-to-head by a girl!)

The Sharks are big. We are midgets err little people. It will be a whitewash in the playoffs I fear.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

"Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on."
--St. Louis Game Time
"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields
"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats
"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
--Thhom
"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp
"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont
"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
--Paul Nicholson
"I actually like the Detroit team and have a sh&% load of respect for them, but their fans are the biggest douches next to Canadians."
--KStewy, PensBlog Commenter
"Just when it looks like we have bottomed out, the 19 hit a new low."
-A2Y legend, Hockeytown Todd

Christy’s coverage of the retirement—and the lead-up to it—has been incredible.
But geezus, what on earth is the Detroit media thinking? I have a hard time understanding how they rationalize their hockey coverage at the best of times, but for this event, I would’ve thought heavy coverage to be a no-brainer.
The mind boggles.
