Tick, Tock…

Three hours and change, or the equivalent of one half of a Vancouver/Bubba Sr. game. Speaking of which, the die-hards who stayed up and watched that entire game are just waking up. A few of them are commenting below. You can tell they’ve had no sleep because they’re using terms like “dratto”. Of course, that was Jeff from Oklahoma…which explains his vocabulary.
Needless to say, I’m barely coherent. And garbage like this doesn’t help. Doesn’t help a bit.
Six hours before the Wings playoff opener tonight there were still plenty of tickets available on-line. Unless they get scooped up fast, the 11-year sellout streak at Joe Louis Arena will end.
I’m not in the mood to stress AND defend Hockeytown. Frankly, I can’t. I can’t do both. Empty seats at the Joe for Game 1 of a playoff series is going to be a news item we can’t argue away; bad economy or not. Apathy from the organ-I-zation is partly to blame, but not fully.
Low expectations and recent gut-wrenching disappointment are the true culprits, and the Wings just have to deal with it. John Boy Hahn can spin it all he wants, look befuddled and shake his head. But the bottom line is this: win the first two and watch the crowds come back for Game 5, if there is one.
More must-haves for tonite: The Enigma must be a presence. We’re not asking him to do anything silly like backcheck, but in the Flame zone…move your frigging feet Langer, please. As Jack Black would say, “create something!”. Damn…look at that. A Tenacious D reference on game day. Nice.
The unveiling of the power play. It’s been dormant all year and it has to awaken now. Calgary’s going to come out hitting tonite, a bunch of crazy women swatting anything that moves, frothing and scowling. We have to capitalize on that. Pop a few tonite, lessen the likelihood of violence in future games, turn it into a style more conducive to Wing hockey.
Ahh..but that style is what earned us that nasty treatment from Don Cherry. Shouldn’t the Wings come out and prove that freakshow wrong? Doesn’t it makes sense that the Wings have to prove to the Don Cherry’s of the world that they can hit with Calgary?
No. The only thing Detroit has to prove is that they can win a damn first-round series. That’s it. Doesn’t matter how. Let Cherry spew all the garbage he wants while fat-ass Brett nods his head and eats his nachos. Win and it all goes away.

That’s been my contention for days W2.

OUCH!!! Good thing that was only a flesh wound. I may live in Oklahoma, but born and raised in Marine City MI—you can attribute the dratto comment to lack of sleep of MI public education (although OU might not like that).
In my opinion, shutting down Iggy will determine the series. If you dare to assume Detroit will maintain it’s league leading shots against, AND that Dom will be—well Dom AND healthy at that, the Wings should be okay. Stay healthy and NO friggin turn-overs. Saw too many scoring chances last night due to the dreaded turnover (and one ended up in the back of the net). Lang needs to replace his teflon stick with Datsyuk’s and the puck magnet he has in his. Its just too much to ask him to back-check an unrealistic expectation. Hope Calder and Samuellson cycle the puck and Lang doesn’t cough it up too often at the blueline.
Kiprusoft will be tough this series, going to have to shoot from everywhere and pray for rebounds. Homer, Franzen, and hopefully Bert are going to have to be there to tap some home. Death for the Wings to try to pass too much—like they always seem to want to do. Need 45 shots/game and hope to pot a few. 3 GF should get us out of the first round. Power play at 85%, PK at 90%. As tight as they were calling the games in regulation last night, we’ll get our chances (0vertimes were another animal altogether); especially since Flame will want to run us through the boards. Go Wings!!!

You want to know what’s sad? I wanted so bad to come up to Detroit and see a playoff game (my first playoff game mind you) but when I went to buy tickets it was $68.00 for STANDING room. In Nashville I found top level seats for $17.50…I know you have talked about the prices but I find it ironic the major price difference at the arenas. The Wings need to remember the fans…

Great.
Just found out that I have to ferry some people/things around at 6:45 due to a serious illness in the (extended) familia.
Sure, the hockey gods pick the *one thing* I can’t conceivably refuse during game 1 of the playoffs.
Curses.

Don’t know if you’ve heard yet, but Magoo is reffing. Bad luck for us all.

T-minus 2 hours. I’m stuck at work and it is starting to snow. Hopefully this meeting will be short and I won’t miss too much of the game and can catch up on TiVo pretty quickly.
GO WINGS!!!

Thanks Kyle. Exactly what we don’t need.
Chic: you’d better get out of that meeting. I can’t believe any of your co-workers are Dive fans, or that they’d admit it. But have you considered the possibility of a conspiracy?

Bummer Dub!! I am firing up the barbie and will have a cold one for you. As I sacrifice a horse to the hockey gods, Ill mention that you need to get home to see the game as well!!!!

Thanks a ton for the offers fellers, but I should be able to pick up 1270… although with McGeough reffing I dunno if I want to hear/see it…
Perhaps I shouldn’t have started drinking quite yet, eh?

Magoo! ARGGHH! (pulls out hair)
IWCPO - I tried convincing my boss that I really, really needed to go home (especially since I was supposed to have the afternoon off) but she does not get the hockey thing. I like the conspiracy idea. That has to be it!

Great Caesars Ghost! I was just about to drop you a line to see what poor smucks had drawn the Great Magoo for their series…..it’s us! Maybe with both teams wearing some Red he will get, ... uh, more “confused” and call a semi even game. Let us pray…....
Posted by Rumbear on 04/12/07 at 05:09 PM ET
T minus 32 minutes…
I’m not going to let the Magoo thing destroy the excitement. Instead, to be honest, I’m really stoked! I can’t wait to see the octopi fly!

No worries, Jeff…
‘Wings 4 Datsyuk (2) Z (1) Schneids (1)
Flames 2 Tangeh (1) Celine (1)‘Wings put 40+ SOG. score 2 on the PP.
Lilja of the valley doesn’t cost us more than 1, Langsidaisical the other.
‘Wings out-hit Flames by a dozen.
Hull announces that the ‘Wings won’t make the playoffs.
Posted by TeamDub from NW Ohio on 04/12 at 12:23 PM
Well, Dats only had 1, Flip scores, Lids scores and Schneids scores.
Only 1 on the PP.
Tangeh does score his one.
40+ SOG?
Check.
Outhit the Flames by a dozen?
Enh, outhit ‘em by 1, but I’ll take it.
Lilja - and I absolutely cannot believe I’m going to let these words pass through my cyber lips - actually played a pretty strong game.
Langsidaisical looked better than he usually does, but still had way, way too many giveaways.
Z looked surprisingly good and aggressive, hope he still feels good tomorrow morning. Thank God for 2 days rest.
Calgary looked unhinged… Iggy with fewer shots than offensive powerhouse Chelios… Franzen *will* be talked aboot tomorrow…
All is well in the universe.
Until Sunday.

P.S. -
I’d appreciate a tip of those 40’s for my Grandfather (well, step-grandfather,) a bronze star recipient who probably won’t live through the night.

Thanks and go ‘Wings.
