Yes. I took a few days off. I deserved it. I was tired. Beat down. Physically exhausted.
But at least I didn’t have a dose of the Triple Bravos, eh Dive bloggers?
One note to the Dive fans out there, in the wake of a sweep and an utter humiliation at the hands of the team you love to hate because your neighbor tells you that it’s cool to do so: eat it.
Let’s take a little spin, check out the Diggers, the Dallas Diggers--one of them a former Detroit Deep Digger before he departed--and see what bloggers deep in the hearta are saying. It’s a frigging link fest is what it is. Speaking of, the port side round-to-round link section has been upated with all your Dallas pointers.
Have a healthy and a happy. It appears all is well. The Wings, heading into the conference finals, are as healthy as a reasonable person could expect. Val Filppula, of the “twisted leg”, didn’t practice today but Khan(!) tells us Uncle Mike’s been talking again.
“I expect him to go,’’ coach Mike Babcock said. “Everything, weight-room wise and everything is going kind of what we expected. I expect him to skate with our team tomorrow. If at that time it doesn’t happen, then that’ll be a change to our plan and I’ll update.
I’m sure his update will be all-inclusive as usual Ansar. Keep your ears open.
Teddy Kulfan mentions the team’s relative health but also got his Dora the Explorer map out and realized the Wings haven’t had to travel nearly as much as playoff years past.
And compared to recent playoff seasons, the Wings haven’t spent nearly the time traveling, either. There have been no West Coast trips at all.
“It helps not having to spend as many hours on a plane, and all the time differences,” defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom said.
“This is an opportunity to feel fresher and get going,” coach Mike Babcock.
I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t mention the fact that I’m happy Uncle Mike doesn’t haven that less than fresh feeling. That would frigging suck.
Jimmy D Jr.’s running his mouth again, and we kinda dig it. When Chelios talks, he reminds me a bit of Brett Hull because there is just no governor. In this case, he may be on to something regarding the official Wing bitch.
“You can get under his skin a bit if you have guys there, bumping him a bit,” Chelios said. “We have a guy like that on each line in Homer (Tomas Holmstrom), Mule (Johan Franzen) and (Dan) Cleary.
I’ll be adding on to this post in a bit. Just a nugget to get you started.
And now I’m adding to it.
Jennifer Floyd Hyphen Engel was the psycho who claimed Dallas were lifeless, barren soul’d pigs (or something like that) on March 14th after a regular season loss to the Righteous Wings. She’s recalling that dreadful day, and she’s wondering which team will represent the 73 hockey fans down in Texas.
I had this Stars team pegged for another quick and dirty playoff run.
Brutal does not do justice to how pathetically compliant they were in Joe Louis. And so it is fitting, in a playoff march that has been all about slaying monkeys for this Stars team, what awaits now is the biggest.
Returning to Detroit.
Where ugly typically happens to them.
And where maybe, just possibly, from that embarrassing mess, this Stars team finally started to become a group capable of an extended Stanley Cup playoff stay. Maybe, they had to slop through a month of ugly to finally develop that resiliency they lacked.
Because what they have become is a team that no longer folds when games get hard.
Wack. Job. Newsflash Sybil: the games are going to get even harder.
Anybody remember Chuck Carlton? He was, I believe, the beat writer who preceded DD Captain Khan(!) at MLive. He’s a Dallas guy now, has been for years.
The bridge to Canada is closed but the giant Uniroyal tire on Interstate 94 remains as a local landmark.
So do the Detroit Red Wings, and their locker room had a distinct 1998 look today. Against one wall were Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby and Darren McCarty, the same checking line from a decade ago.
Nicklas Lidstrom, on his way to a sixth Norris Trophy, was talking in one corner. Chris Osgood was on the other side, surrounded by reporters. He was in a good mood until someone (uh, me) asked him what he remembered from 1998 West finals. He clearly wasn’t in the mood for a Jamie Langenbrunner flashback.
Anyone else remember the other Wing beat writer to defect to Dallas? Yep. Keith Gave. Remember him? He’s your boy isn’t he? Popular fella. I’m sure you remember his role in the Yzerman-to-Ottawa rumors back in ‘93.
Anybody feel like a series preview? Yeah? Tomorrow.

the first one and the third one are the same, basically. the writer has a blog where she posts links to the same stories. is that all you could find? I’m surprised (or am I?) that there aren’t more Stars blogs.
Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach on 05/06/08 at 10:19 PM ET
geez, the Stars blogs are weak. couldn’t find one where there are fans commenting, and the last one is just a blank page (for me anyway). I sure hope the Stars fans find their way here or it’s going to be a boring series of blogging.

I’ve always known in the back of my mind playing these guys and having a lack of success, I always knew it hasn’t happened in the playoffs, and that would be the ultimate test to see where you stand. So to say the least, I’m looking forward to it.
Turco.
Like you Marty, Dats and Z have proven themselves prime playoff performers. Unlike you, however, they only have to talk to Homer and Franzen, not smell their jock in the middle of the game. And all of us, in the back of our minds, know that destroying you in the regular season means very little except as a storyline for this series. And in the back of Dats’ mind, he’s inventing all sorts of ankle breaking, soul crushing, highlight reel making moves right now.

Sorry, just one more thing from the same source:
Question: Has Datsyuk come the farthest in terms of his defensive play than any player that you’ve seen? When he first came up, nobody was talking about him as a great defensive player. Now it’s just a given.
Mike Babcock : It’s just one of those things we believe in here. Your best player has to be good. You can’t be hiding him. I’m not interested in that. I want my best players on the ice. So we partway through last year made a point of making sure Z had the matchup some nights, then Pavel had the matchups some nights and Draper did. So we said they all had to be responsible. They all had to be able to kill penalties five-on-three and they all had to take big faceoffs. We just think that’s the way to go.
We’re going to do the same with Filppula. You have to be able to play against the best people. The same with the Mule. That’s our philosophy here. Scotty had that philosophy when he came here with Yzerman. That will continue to be our philosophy.
We don’t believe that you can play - well, you can - but if you’re playing against Ribeiro all night long and he’s not worried about your ability to score, he doesn’t have to play defense. When you play against these guys, he’s got to worry about playing both sides of the puck.
Posted by Osrt on 05/07/08 at 12:16 AM ET
The only one with style in Dallas, literary or otherwise, is Modano.
And I forgot to say this in the previous post: Babs adopting Scotty’s ideas and pushing them with his intensity is part of the reason he’s the effin Man. This is also the system, and organizational atmosphere, that will make Fil a future Selke winner.

One more from the same source; I’m sure it will show up in stories for a few weeks but we need to get at it first.
Chief, Dub, Nate; we must find a way to post a shorter version of this on the site.
Question: Mike, why do you think it is that even now that you’re in the Stanley Cup semifinals that the Wings still don’t seem to get everyone’s level of respect? Some people picking Dallas. Do you think it’s because of the division you played in all year?
Mike Babcock : I don’t know. Our division we played in all year, we were .500 in and we spanked the rest of league. So I think we should throw that out.
italics are mine, but the word “spanked” is not!
Posted by Osrt on 05/07/08 at 05:53 AM ET
I also noted his comment about how he likes Dallas Drake to run defensemen.
Posted by w2j2 on 05/07/08 at 06:21 AM ET
there are so many things that can be said about Babcock adopting Bowman’s system, and why that system is superb. but the main thing that sticks in my mind is what he said about making the other teams’ forwards play defense, too. that’s brilliant. it also makes sense from a “not relying on just one guy to shut them down” perspective. if you’ve got three or four forwards you can trust against the other teams’ top forwards, then matchups become less of a problem - and road wins come easier.

Heres some good news/karma, from Helene St. James and George Sipple at the Detroit Free Press :
The Wings have been told rules are loosening up regarding twirling the octopus, so maybe, just maybe, Al Sobotka will get to make his moves again this round. The NHL threatened him with a $10,000 fine if he did so because debris comes off the slimy creatures and embeds itself in the ice.
Bad juju for the Stars, very bad!!!

Sadly that poor horse that died in the Kentucky Derby didn’t have the option of Ms. Engel replacing her. Strap a feedbag on Ms. Hate and she’s a triple crown contender.
Better yet, after Turco gets pasted and shellacked they could strap some pads on her and put her between the pipes. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Use this to disprove the “The Wings are SOOOO Old and the Stars are SOOOO Young” arguments.
Using the rosters for the Wings and Stars, as of May 4th, 2008, the average ages of the teams are:
Detroit: 29.32
Dallas: 27.73
Difference: 1.59

Filpulla practices! That’s good news. This is a great lineup and I’m confident of our chances. The Dallas series will be close, but barring any injury or Jesus-like performance from Turco, we should advance. This is a strong lineup, with scoring and defense throughout:
Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom
Franzen-Filppula-Samulesson
Cleary-Draper-Drake
Hudler-Helm-McCarty
Lidstrom-Stuart
Kronwall-Rafalski
Lebda-Chelios

Wonder why the split? Other than I though Stuie was a little slow on getting the puck out of the zone—on more than a few occassions—against COL?

Jeff, I imagine they’re expecting a more physical series than the one with Colorado. That pairing adds some size to the first line.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 05/07/08 at 11:32 AM ET
And in other news, Paul Maurice was fired today...so let’s all brace ourselves for the invitable rumors of Babcock and Bowman both considering the job. I’m sure they’ll find a way to throw Yzerman’s name in there too.
I hear Babcock’s even considering a demotion to assistant coach behind Bowman. And neither will take a paycheck. They’ll do it just for the glory of the Leafs Nation.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 05/07/08 at 11:40 AM ET
Paul, taking out Hasek and Chelios doesn’t impact the average age as much as you might think. Even with them out, Dallas is still a WHOLE year younger (and I say that with the utmost sarcasm).
Point is, we have two teams playing in this series that have good mixes of veterans, newcomers, and younger players in the prime of their careers. Age is not an issue with either club.
Posted by Nathan on 05/07/08 at 12:03 PM ET
Just thought I’d deposit this tidbit of information on the “19”, from TSN.ca:
Turco is carrying an 0-7-2 record and a 3.17 goals-against average at “The Joe” into the Western Conference finals against the Detroit Red Wings starting Thursday night. . .
But Turco isn’t much better against the Red Wings in Dallas, going 2-3-3. That’s a career record of 2-10-5 against Detroit for a goalie who’s 205-93-21 against everyone else.
Posted by Jeff OKWingnut from Hockey Netherworld on 05/07/08 at 01:44 PM ET
Jeff:
Babcock may think this series is going to be more physical, and may want to have a bruiser out there with Lidstrom. But who knows.
Posted by TDeters on 05/07/08 at 01:53 PM ET
For those of you as mathematically challenged as I am, Turco’s winning % against DET (2 wins in 17 tries) = 0.1176 %. Against the rest of the NHL is 0.6426 %.

Uncle Mike on Kronwall
“But the dimension that makes him different than Rafi and Nick is he’s out there hunting you down. He’s looking for you. He’s going to get somebody in this series, I guarantee it.”
Send the message early and if they forget, repeat.
Posted by D Town in Bubbaville on 05/07/08 at 02:41 PM ET
Even if he has learned Scotty’s system and the organization’s philosophy, Babs brings the intensity and soul penetrating scowl to animate the players. This is more important now that our team is much younger and developing strong two way players. He wouldn’t have been able to do that with Stevie, Shanny or the other Hall of Famers.
Perfect fit for our team right now.
However, I would like to go on record and say that I don’t like the idea of changing our top four D. I’m sure they’re getting in some good practice time, but Kronner and Stuart complement each other so well that I don’t want to disrupt that. They’re also out there with our second unit and, combined with Franzen and an angry Sammy, are a powerful unit.
In Babs we trust. Except when he’s wrong, which he is on this one.
Posted by Osrt on 05/07/08 at 02:54 PM ET
I think the D will be fine. Lidstrom complements anyone. Kronner can still headhunt while lidstrom stays home. While Rafaslki and Stuart present a slightly uncertain combination I think that they should still be dominant. I do agree with Osrt in the sense that one thing that tends to haunt the wings is when they try to modify their game to suit someone else rather than forcing the opposite. Ultimately though, the Dallas D will be more of a story in this round than the Wings’ D. I think the cracks will start to appear on Turco and the kids in front of him. So our D will be fine not to be confused with those on the Hasek who will be F.I.N.E.
Posted by Monchichi from Traverse City aka Hockeytown North on 05/07/08 at 08:06 PM ET
Wasn’t the split Lidstrom-Stuart, not Lidstrom-Kronwall? I like the former, but not so much the latter. Franzen’s line needs Kronwall more than Datsyuk’s line. I don’t know what pairs Babcock will start with, but it doesn’t matter because if he doesn’t like what he sees, he’ll switch in an instant.
Maybe it’s just my perception, but it seems like that’s something Babcock learnt from the conference finals last year, when he was probably a bit slow to seperate/reunite Datsyuk and Zetterberg.

By the way, Maggie the Macaque picked the Wings again this round, for the sixth time in a row. Since 2003, the Wings have been 4-2 when picked by Maggie, and 1-2 when not picked.

Homicide or Suicide; take your pick.
For the sake of everyone, gotta go with homicide. Maggie provides intentional humor, and a reminder that the playoffs can be unpredictable. The Mulleted One is only humorous with the idiotic things he says, the awful suits he wears, and the hairstyle he refuses to let go. My only regret in a post-Barry Melrose world would be the absence of the “Melrose kiss of death” bestowed upon Wings’ opponents.
Posted by Aphaea from Pennsylvania on 05/08/08 at 09:55 AM ET
Maggie probably figures that even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while - on the other hand, her predictions reflect the inherent uncertainty in the playoffs, similar to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, whereas each game is both won and lost for each team until the final score is determined. A 0.500 record is quite good in such an environment.

Sweet video Dub!!
Here is some more good news: Fil is playing tonight!! KHAN!:
Update from the morning skate: Valterri Filppula will play tonight in Game 1 vs. Dallas after missing two days of practices earlier this week with a leg injury. There are no lineup changes for the Wings.
“I felt good,’’ Filppula said. “We played a lot this season, so missing a couple of days I don’t think is going to be a big deal.’’

FYI: Leading scorers vs DAL this year:
Valtteri Filppula, 5 (1G, 4A); Nicklas Lidstrom 5 (5A); Pavel Datsyuk 5 (3G, 2A).
Also, Fil has 4 pts in the last 4 playoff games.

Val work your magic tonight! It would be great if the Wings got an early goal so that they can dictate the pace and not get too bogged down in Dallas’ mucking/grinding style. The Wings have to stay out of the box. Their PK was not so impressive last round and Dallas has a very good PP. Anyone know who the refs are tonight?
Is it game time yet?
