If you weren’t fortunate enough to see the banner raising tonite, whether on Versus (TGA!) or CBC.
Well, here you go.

So, disappointing game though, huh?
Looked to me like Babcock’s 2-team preseason thing backfired—the actually day-to-day lineup didn’t look like they were on the same page yet. Can’t get ‘em all right, and the organizational depth almost forced him to play it that way.
All-in-all, not a big deal, they’ll hit a stride in a week or two. Hopefully the disappointing performance against the Leafs will spur the team on to shelling the Sens.

Thanks Chief. That was awesome. I had to work, so I didn’t get to see the banner raising. And it sounds like that’s about the only part of the night worth watching.
I had a BBJF give me crap about “losing on your banner raising night”, but then I asked him to repeat that last bit again. “Banner raising night,” he said. And that pretty much was the end of that.

Not surprising. Jersey retirements, banner raisings - pre-game ceremonies have a tendency to knock teams out of whack sometimes. They’ll still get their 47-53 wins or so this season, just not on opening night.
It could always be worse - poor Calgary got shelled 6-0 by Vancouver.

Yes, six times - it was incredible.
Alanah must be giddy.

Despite what Doc Emmerich said on the Versus feed last night, I wasn’t impressed with the Zetterberg-Franzen-Hudler line last night; Then again, up to the giveaway that led to the game-winning goal, I thought Cleary had been the best player on the ice. Bottom line is that even the Red Wings aren’t going to win too many games when they give the other team two easy goals and plenty of chances for more.
Good news? Datsyuk-Hossa-Holmstrom looked really good together and will only get better the more time they have to get used to each other.
Posted by J.J. from Kansas on 10/10/08 at 10:26 AM ET
I wish Versus had shown more of the ceremony then have Doc and Edzo blather through most of it.
Wings looked flat, like they haven’t really molded yet.
Watching hockey in HD is heaven.

Osgood is better than Luongo! Lol.
Posted by rwhater on 10/10/08 at 11:15 AM ET
I thought Hossa and Datsyuk were individually both excellent. Some nice cross ice passes on the PP, for sure! Once they get to the point where they’re playing together it’s going to absolutely unfair for the other teams. it’s one of those “if you cover one guy the other guy is open” things or they’ll get a lot of 1-on-1s and make people look silly.
I’m wondering how it’s going to play out though - will Datsyuk/Zetterberg be better together because they’re complementary, or will Datsyuk/Hossa be better together because their styles are more similar. In the end, though, it gives Babcock a wicked option.
When they put Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Zetterberg, Hossa, Lidstrom, and Rafalski on the ice for the 6-on-4 I just about peed myself. As usual, it seems like there’s no way they could possibly NOT score…but we all know how those thoughts usually work out.

ha! yeah, but ya gotta give Ozzie his creds… his glove hand, er, both hands rather, are weighted down by his three cup rings. Where’s Bobbylou’s?

Exactly what I was thinking watching these guys all out of sync.
Who’s the first person that will say ‘Detroit Tigers 08 all over again on ice’.
Not me.

That is sweet. Damn that’s a lot of Ilitchs’, AND Mark Howe!

Babcock really didn’t have much choice in creating 2 teams for the pre-season.
They were playing too many games in too short a time.
He could have called it 1 team, but he still would have been leaving guys home every other game and using massive substitutions.
It is what it is, and with a set roster, they should start humming in short order.
In fact, a little road trip might be just what the doctor ordered.
Posted by w2j2 on 10/10/08 at 06:59 PM ET
So i’m watching the Stars game right now, and I feel way better about the Wings. The Stars look just as out of synch and the game flow is just as choppy as the game last night.
Also, this made me feel better:
So two ducks are on their honeymoon, and after a little foreplay, they start for the real thing. All of a sudden the male duck says “wait honey, I don’t have any condoms. I’ll get some from room service.”
So the male duck calls room service and orders some condoms. The lady on the phone says “should I put them on your bill, sir?”
The duck replies “NO! I’ll suffocate!”

So, a married guy and his wife are in bed. The guy starts reaching aroud his wife, rubbing her here and there, and she is getting excited. Suddenly, he just stops. She asked him why he stopped.
“Because I found the TV remote.”

I am watching that dallas game too. sluggish pp. Unreal on Morrows shot that went off the post.

Checking out mondays opponent the Canes. Their game against Florida was pretty wide open up and down the ice.
Good jokes.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/10/08 at 08:43 PM ET
Jeez Dallas has had 2 two man advantages on the PP and scored on the first. Still a trip to see avery in a stars uni.
Well tomorrow is a new day for the Wings and I expect a better performance.
Dallas has made some adjustments and are up 2-1 now. They are no longer living in their own zone now.lol.

I do believe that Turco plays and handles the puck better then Lilja does.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/10/08 at 09:13 PM ET
There’s no doubt he does. Compare Turco’s puck handling to Ozzie’s “pass” right out front last night.
Posted by rwingscup19 from Dallas on 10/10/08 at 09:53 PM ET
Dallas down 4-2 all of a sudden. Just goes to show you that its one game, and the more talented teams probably need more time to gel.
Posted by rwingscup19 from Dallas on 10/10/08 at 09:55 PM ET
The Dallas Columbus game was a trip. First period Dallas was horrible. second period Columbus was horrible, third period Dallas was horrible. They took turns trying to see who stunk the most!
Ozzy usually handles the puck pretty good. He is one of a few that scored a goal as a goaltender. The other night was a fluke, the whole team was out played.. However I doubt it happens very often this year. Mike makes sure very few teams out work his team. so today will be a mucho better performance. Kick some booty boys! Plus Gerber has looked shaky in net for the Sens.
Did anyone notice former Wings goaltender Joey MacDonald started the home opener for the Islanders? He did fine with 27 saves in a 2-1 loss against the Devils. Brodeur was awesome as usual. Stoned them totally!

That’s awesome. I just spent a good (really good, actually) 15 minutes staring at all the names.
But, I’m a Wings fan, so I have a bitch. There’s all that empty space in the top half with the all the front office types, then they mash the players up so much at the bottom they don’t have enough space to spell out all the names.

Monkey,
I agree.
Man, there are a lot of Ilitch family members on there!
I never heard of most of those, and they are not listed here:
http://redwings.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&bcid=win_frontOffice
Remember how Peter Pocklington Sr. got his name X’d off the cup because he was not part of the Edmonton effort???
I guess ownership has its privileges, but in the big scheme, it was the guys on the ice sacrificing their bodies to win the cup, not the extended Ilitch family.

It’s almost game time. With Center Ice you always get the HNIC pre-game show. It’s a nice little warm up.
Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Yeah, I just heard about Quincey. HankySpanky, you were right. I wuz wrong! Now, over/under on him getting picked up? Gotta be about nine to one.
There’s a portly gent in uniform singing O Canada on FSN-Detroit. That must mean it’s time for a live blog. Osrt’s here for one too. Anyone?

Kopy standing up for Maltby…good guy. Well, it may be a tied game, but at least ours came at even-strength from our third line—not top PP unit on a five-on-three.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 10/11/08 at 06:48 PM ET
looking much better thus far. We keep playing like this and we will be rewarded.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/11/08 at 07:10 PM ET
Sens playing much more physical to start out this period. Gerber has looked good and Fil almost cashed in again.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/11/08 at 07:11 PM ET
Awesome Ozzy, cool story about Datsyuk getting off the team bus to sign three little kids Datsyuk jerseys.
Anyone else thing it’s just a matter of time for the Homer dats hossa line? They look better and better as the game goes on.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/11/08 at 07:16 PM ET
Well into the second period, and FINALLY we get a PP…But again, I must reiterate…WHY is William Tell still on the point? Case in point—Vermette just skated through him at the blueline and nearly would have had a shorty if not for a good Osgood save and an equally good save on the rebound.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 10/11/08 at 07:18 PM ET
Fil looks great tonight. Great work along the boards by draper and maltby. You know that drives an opponent crazy.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/11/08 at 07:22 PM ET
Yeah, but some of the shtick that the Sens are being allowed to get away with because they’re on their heels…we should have way more than ONE power play opportunity by now.
Posted by AndrewFromAnnArbor from Fortress Europe on 10/11/08 at 07:24 PM ET
I wonder too Andrew but they seam to like him there.lol Go figure. It’s contract year for him so maybe he will cash in on that as far as scoring. lets hope. I wonder if they resign him though because of the push from Lenio and Helm.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/11/08 at 07:24 PM ET
Great…now we get our minute of five-on-three. Come on, make it count…
