I think the lines did well tonight. each line carried us through certain parts of the game. hoss’s line did a ton of great things but just didn’t get on the board. it will come for them I have no doubt. Poor gerber plays a great game then it ends like that. They will continue to fry his booty in the press.
awesome come from behinder!!!!
Thank God for ozzy he should be in the three stars for sure. Franzen, fil and Ozzie looked great but dats was strong and hossa as well. poor hank they blistered him with hits tonight but he came back each time harder!

Second that, Osrt. So, uh...Kenny?
FRANZEN. RE-SIGN. NOW.
We KNOW we won’t keep Hossa beyond this season. Let’s have Much More Mule. Long-term. At least we know that if we re-unite the Circus, we can make Franzen a one-man ass-kicking line.
Oh, and let’s have less icing in the dying seconds. We can live without the empty-netters, guys.
So, that’s that. Finally we’ve got some points. And we avoid the starting the season with two losses bit. So...who’s next?
SEC football on now, after Deep Riverrock water has just insulted me by saying it’s purer than me. That means it’s time for sleep. Night all.

G’night.

Hey, Monkey, when I saw what i had accidentally agreed with Osrt on, I DID post a clarification. I’m all for re-signing The Mule, as is Osrt. However, I have no particular wish for what your true identiy is, while Osrt does. While he would like you to secretly be a smart beautiful woman, it doesn’t matter to me if you’re a homely illiterate dwarf, a stunningly gorgeous yet tragically wheelchair-bound Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist, or a spandex-clad genius supervillain bent on world domination living in a hollowed-out dormant volcano shaped like a skull with dozens of doomsday devices. (Actually, that last one would be pretty cool. Except for the spandex part.)
And I don’t care if he scored a hat trick last night, Big Bert is still an uber-lazy shell of his former self with a wonky back and Steve Moore hang-ups. If we’d gotten the pre-incident Bertuzzi, with the power-forward play and the sociopathic streak, then I’d be pissed off he’s in another Western Conference jersey, but these days, meh. If we’d re-signed him, he’d be playing in Grand Rapids right now.
NHL.com has Fleury as the third star of the night. All he did was manage to lose in overtime. They couldn’t have found a more deserving third star? Say, one who scored two goals to inspire a come-from-behind win against an Eastern Conferece power?

Hahahahaha, you guys are awesome. I was doing the ol’ LMAO the whole time. Thanks for the laughs.
You know, I got why Osrt wrote that- it just came across kind of, um, weird.
Posted by monkey from Gary's World, setting fire to McCrimmon on 10/12/08 at 07:49 AM ET
Seriously, the longer Kenny waits to re-sign Franzen, the more he’s gonna cost. But of course his agent knows this. :(

I gotta say, what with the economy as it is making an increase in the cap unlikely and the relative value of the players on the open market, I can’t see how we can afford to keep Hossa, Z, and Mule.
After having done some quick and dirty calculations, and given what I consider to be a very generous $3.3mil bump to the cap, keeping Z and Mule on board is relatively easy as long as both are on board with a little hometown discount (Z and/or Hossa could max out somewhere else, and we can’t afford to pay that much). The darker side, I would think, as most Wings fans don’t have much attachment to Hossa, is that we could also afford to keep Hossa and Mule.
Unless something remarkable happens, such as a large increase in the cap, multiple players agreeing to re-structure their deals to make room, or one or more of those guys agreeing to take a lot less than what they’re worth, we’re going to have to say goodbye to someone.
In Kenny we trust, in Kenny we trust....

Oh, and I still can’t believe we locked Wally up to a five year $15mil deal. Bargain basement.

Monkey’s cap calculations are doomsday enough. Stupid cap. Can’t we just pay a luxury tax for being Ballers?

Okay, that conversation took a sharp turn toward the odd side ... I’m not sure where that speculation came from ... (Monkey, look out for RWBill and his fantasies!)
I can’t see Hossa staying more than the one year, really. He doesn’t have the attachment and I for one hope he gets the Cup he is looking for and then goes off to a team of his choosing for big money and plays very well for them.
Zetterberg is staying - who else would be the captain when Lidstrom retires?
Franzen will definitely be a tough one to keep, just because everyone else is also going to have to get raises. However there are a number of young players in Grand Rapids just about ready to slide into holes and hopefully that will leave the salary space for him, too.
Although, just hypothetically - what if Zetterberg went on the market nearing the trade deadline, as did Hossa? Any thoughts as to what Hank could bring in as a rental - or a sign-and-trade type of deal? Vancouver for one has a ton of cap room, and I’d bet that Toronto would love to have him. Or the Blue Jackets - Zetterberg and Rick Nash would be scary.

That’s actually the first thing I thought- “RWBill, is that you?”

Exactly my thoughts. My prediction would be we keep Z and Mule and can’t afford Hossa. Too much has been invested in the guys we’ve brought up, especially Hank.
Franzen will definitely be a tough one to keep, just because everyone else is also going to have to get raises. However there are a number of young players in Grand Rapids just about ready to slide into holes and hopefully that will leave the salary space for him, too.
I see Franzen as the easiest of the three to hold on to. The guys coming up for UFA next year are Chelios, Downey, McCarty, Conklin, Sammy, Kopecky, Franzen, Zetterberg, and Hossa. The first six, financially, are a wash. We either sign them or we don’t, and if we don’t, we pick someone else up at about the same price, or bring a prospect up at the league minimum. If Kopecky is due a raise, he can have Sammy’s salary, and we can easily replace Tell with a youngster making the minimum. That leaves Mule, Z, and Hossa. Hossa can’t get a raise, not from us anyway, them’s the rules; only Z and Franzen are due for fat increases. With a $3.3mil cap bump you’ve got about $14mil for three players, or, in other words, enough to sign two of them. Unless Franzen goes bat-shit nuts and scores 100 goals this year (he’s only on pace for 82), but assuming (hoping) he continues his goal scoring ways, I see him as a 4-5mil guy, with Z taking the Red Wings max 7.45mil (Hossa’s current salary), which would leave us with a bit of wiggle room under the cap and a farewell party for Mars.
But, then again, that $3.3 million raise in the cap ceiling might be expecting a lot.
Although, just hypothetically - what if Zetterberg went on the market nearing the trade deadline, as did Hossa? MULE!
Posted by monkey from Gary's World, setting fire to McCrimmon on 10/12/08 at 11:06 AM ET
No way Z goes anywhere. Mule will be signed as well. Not surprised if both Z and the mule get signed by January or sooner. Sammy won’t be resigned, and I could see Hudler getting traded if anyone does. Leino and Helm are more then ready.Leion needs to get use to the North American game both on and off the ice. the travel, the media, the long season, strengh and endurance. Those are huge things to get use to. whereas Helm has had to deal with that during the most critical time, the NHL playoffs. maltby could also be traded. when holland said this is a one year window he was putting many of these guys on alert Next season Lilja goes and Ericsson comes aboard as well. Play your way off or on this team. If Hossa can put monster numbers together and if he jells with homer and Dats, he will, then they will find a way to keep him. It may cost trading some guys, not resigning some guys( but younger more then ready and cheaper guys step in and up) and Z and Mule taking less to keep more. this isn’t a rule this is a tradition and all the big time players have followed suit with less money, it’s a bridge to leadership in Detroit.
Ok it’s football time!!!! cya have a good Sunday!

I think a lot of the blame goes to the uniform pants in the two sports.
Posted by Baroque from Michigan on 10/12/08 at 05:36 PM ET
I’d say they could switch pants but that would be very dangerous!
watching The av’s Oilers. Oilers have on retro jerseys boy they look weird! kinda boring so far a few scoring chances. Adam Foote’s 1000th game still fun to not like him. Tucker as an AV, still fun not to like him so all and all not a bad game to watch. Oilers gettin the PP.

Boedker just had a sweet goal against the Ducks and Giggy. Phoenix up 1-0. Pretty fast paced the Ducks look out of wack.
Posted by hankyspanky40 from Michigan on 10/12/08 at 07:34 PM ET
@ HS40: Agreed on the pants. And football players generally have longer rap sheets, too.
I’ve got the Oilers on, too. Those uniforms are garish, but I like them. The whole point of sports uniforms should be loud, bright, clear colors - leave subdued colors for normal clothes. Just not as much blaze orange as the Islanders. Yuck! The traditional uniforms are the best because of so much history attached to them.
I’m debating whether I can really afford Center Ice after the free preview is up. It is pretty nice to be able to see more games for teams I don’t normally see, but I have so many evening commitments this fall that I’m not sure I could really take advantage of it until after Christmas.

NHL.com GAMECENTER: Has anyone subsribed to this? It looks pretty cool as long as your broadband stays up. You can watch up to 4 games simultaneously on you screen, or some games you can simultaneously watch 3 additional cams like the goal cam. Live stats are displayed during the game. Up to 40 games a week sounds like NHL Center Ice. You also have access to archived games and classics. Thing is with CenterIce I often DVR the game while my daughter and I watch something else then after she goes to bed I’ll watch the game in about 80 minutes. With this GameCenter you’d have to watch it live or wait for it to be archived.
Both are advertised at $139 for the season. If money was no object I’d subscribe to both. If you buy NHL2K9 there is supposed to be a coupon for 60 day free trial of GameCenter. Anyone have any other thoughts on it? Hmm, wonder what the overseas access is for folks like AndrewinAnnArborinStockholminRomeinMoscowinSomeChicksPants.
Posted by RWBill from jabbing a six inch sewing needle into my eye. on 10/13/08 at 09:09 AM ET
Why Uncle Mike loves Cleary. Yeah he had the ill conceived weak cross-ice pass at his own blue line in Game 1 that was a killer, but he doesn’t turn it over much. In the 3rd period Draper penalty (vs. Ott) Uncle Mike put ICanSeeClearyNowTheRainIsGone on the first PK unit and he had about 3 big hits right away forechecking his a** off. A lot of energy and physical play, he was hitting anything that moved and pinning the puck against the boards 175 feet away from his Goalie. I was trying to find some video of it but can’t, it was some of the best 20 seconds of effort that will never get acknowledged except by his coaches and teammates.
The thing that separated the SC Champion ‘08 team from the 2 previous years was the furthering of the concept to “be tougher to play against”. I was a little concerned with the loss of Drake and Downey replaced by Hossa and Kopecky that we would lose what put us over the top last year. As long as guys like Cleary keep working their tail off we’ll be okay.
Posted by RWBill from jabbing a six inch sewing needle into my eye. on 10/13/08 at 09:19 AM ET
Well, I’m late as usual posting something. The Wings looked better against Ottawa though Sammy still can’t hit the side of a barn. Why were the Sens allowed to mug Zetterberg all night?
Whine for the season - so I’m paying for Center Ice and I couldn’t get HNIC on Saturday. I’m thinking the frigging NHL Network must have had it and I was unable to see it. I was very unhappy. My cable system refuses to carry the NHL network, even though it is Comcast. Go figure. Great, another season of me losing out on games because I can’t get the NHL network. O.k. there it is my whine for the season.

I have center ice and am in my glory. Once the cold weather hits my opinion is I don’t go outside unless I have to or the house is on fire! well if I have a Tim Hortons cappuccino attack i will go there. So I wear my zetterberg jersey, wrap up in my blankie and overdose on hockey. The only shows I will miss because of hockey is 24 and survivor.
My prediction on the game tonight is wings 6 canes 3 - game winning goal ZZZZ!!! Yes Yes Yes yes yes!!!!!!
Cleary is a Bull dogl!!!! Martin Lapointe use to have a tatoo of a Bull dog on his right shoulder. Best thing about Cleary is he doesn’t take Lapointe meltdown penalties.lol
I lost in fantasy football, my record is 4-2 boo hoo!

canes really miss Eric Cole, he and Staal had great chemistry. staal is a great player watching him is a treat. Goaltender cam ward has looked great and then bad so the lulls they hit during games have to be taken advantage of. The wings need to control the puck, wear out their forwards and force them into silly mistakes. Keep the ice tilted in the canes zone. they are strong on defense with their top pairing Gleason and Corvo and maybe one other with Pitkanen after that the wings have the advantage. Drapers line should dog their first line and I look for our third line to really run wild because the Canes just can’t match up line to line. also look for dats line to breakout. no way the Canes can contain our top two lines offensively. Ex-wing Ray whitney and staal work well together, their first line is slick and with Samsonov and the second line center Brind’Amour. Brindy is banged up and not practicing all the time because of a knee leg issues. Two of our lines should be able to take advantage of the match ups although the canes have the last change but still.
