About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site.”
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont

Waiting For 3

They’re cleaning up the Stress Train after Sunday’s OT.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, the fourth period Sunday night didn’t last long so there isn’t much to do. Should be ready to board by 1800 or so.  As you wait, here are a few tidbits to keep you occupied.

Some fella named Jeff Meade at the Monroe News is in a bad mood, and has decided to list a number of things that make his tummy hurt.  First and foremost?

The home of the Detroit Red Wings opened in 1979. It was named Joe Louis Arena to honor the Detroit native who held the heavyweight boxing title longer than anyone before or since. Louis was a true hometown hero who performed with dignity and class. Shortening the arena’s name to “The Joe” honors no one. It’s an insult to the memory of a great man.

You’re right Jeff.  Take the fist down.  Call it “The Schmeling”.  Joe Louis is most definitely sad and spinning at this trend to use only his first name when referring to the arena named after him.  In that paragraph you wasted on a sniveling whine that seems to have affected only you, you could have applauded Detroit for sticking with JLA rather than caving to corporate sponsors like, oh, The Pepsi Center.

Bellows of misfortune from the Poultry have become the norm.  They feel only bad, horrible luck has kept them from a 2-0 lead in the WCF (or the Stanley Cup Finals, if you’re that daring).  They claim two fluke goals sealed their fate in Game 1 and their true colors showed on Sunday.  Cam Cole of Camwest News sees it differently, and feels the Wings are, at the very least, holding up their end.

“In our eyes, we played very well in both games,” said defenceman Chris Pronger. “Probably deserved to win both games. Came out with a split.”

They needed two video-review goals - one of them extremely iffy - and a seeing-eye wrist shot from a sharp angle by Scott Niedermayer in overtime to win Game 2 on Sunday, or they would be down 2-0 to the Detroit Red Wings in their Western Conference final, with Game 3 tonight at the place the denizens still think of as The Pond.

Plenty more in there.  Read it while you’re waiting in line for the Stress Train tonite and you may decide to find alternate means of transportation.  In English:  things aren’t looking as bad as they could be.  Here’s the only thing we really know about this series:  it’s going to be tight, every game, every shift.  Seven games seems exceedingly likely and whoever wins is going to be one beaten up team to face Ottawa.  And even so, whoever win(g)s takes the Sens in 5.

Naturally, because age is everything and the Wings haven’t proven they can take a pounding from Calgary or San Jose, the MSM and most of the bloggers are citing that as the reason Anaheim will prevail.

Most bloggers.  Not all.

If you can forget about some of the birthdates on the roster and just watch them, you’ll notice that Detroit is as fit and as tough a team as there is in the league. I fully expect the Ducks to win one of the first two in Detroit; I wouldn’t even be shocked if the Ducks have 2-1 or even 3-2 series leads; but I think the Wings are going to emerge in the end. Detroit in 7.

Finally on the subject of fan bitterness, which we brought up last week; here’s an example from the comment section on AQ’s Conference Finals Prediction post.

As a true Caniac, I can not pull for the Wings or the Buffa-Slugs. An Ottawa-Anaheim Cup series would be most excellent.

As long as Buf/Detroit don’t win it all, I’m content.

I love that.  As a true Caniac, I can’t pull for Detroit.  I’m naturally curious how hating the Wings qualifies someone as a “true Caniac.” It’s funny, but I don’t think the “true Flyer fans” or “true Caps fans” feel that kind of jealousy/bitterness.

True Caniac?  There’s your official definition.  Pre-req number 1: hate the Wings.

Way to go Chief--pull an Army and twist the truth around. :p

Me?  AQ that makes me sad.

Just sayin’, mang. Just sayin’.

Detroit in 7.

7 in Detroit.

The two are intrinsically linked.  And with the looks of the other Conf Final series, the Wings will have home ice advantage in the Cup Finals, too.

Somebody go find an answer to a stats question:  how often do teams win the Stanley Cup without playing at least one game 7 in the playoffs?

Posted by Paul from Miami Beach  on  05/15  at  03:58 PM

Caniacs like to think that they’re number 1 in hockey, which they currently still are (Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs both have more Cups than the Wings).

There is only one team to threaten that position and that team is the Red Wings (although we need to win the Cup 15 times more).  They’d rather give a cup to the Ducks since they don’t have any and are miles off in threatening any Canadian team.  Hopefully we can shut them up and send the Ottawa daywalker captain to retirement.

Ummm, Peter J. from Columbus ... just how exactly would you define a Caniac anyway?

Is there some humor buried in there that I’m missing?  Because it sure looks like that Columbus part of you might be sticking out like a (scarlet red) sore thumb…

I thought a Caniac was a fan of the HurriCANES… maybe I’m wrong.

I might be considered an ignorant, but I’ve seen the abbreviation MSM a lot these last few weeks, and I don’t have a clue what that means. Is it Madison Square Merlin?

Posted by Luc  on  05/15  at  06:36 PM

MSM....=...Main Stream Media.  Detroit in seven.  Yup.

“The Joe” it’s a keeper.  Hey Chief, I guess the MSM have not picked up on yur moniker for the Gaylord Entertainment Center!

Can we get on the train yet?

I live in Raleigh, and work not far from the most recent Stanley Cup parade route (aka the RBC Center parking lot). I was through there last week, all I saw was a bunch of Mezcans working on the adjacent football stadium. Pretty quiet over there this spring.

I was not hearing a lot from a couple of my buddies who were Canes season ticket holders. I was concerned for their well-being, and invited them over to watch the Wings on the big screen this past Sunday. You know, talk HOCKEY, it’s the PLAYOFFS, and we’re hockey fans!! Offered to cook a small animal of their choice for the tailgate, and told ‘em they could get a picture taken in my Yzerman sweater (because I’m a shirt off my back kind of guy).....All I got was “F### the Red Wings, you dirty sumbitch”

Boy, they sure got bitter in a hurry, now that someone else is coming for their Stanley Cup;-)

Posted by dougie  on  05/15  at  08:02 PM

We’ve only got 9-1/2 years of hockey experience as Caniacs.  Yes, I’m still bitter about ‘02.  But where did that comment say the word hate

I don’t hate Detroit (or any other NHL team for that matter).  They’re fun to watch.

We know our original six, oh Chieftain.

Posted by WufPirate from Raleigh, NC  on  05/15  at  08:36 PM

Why do so many Caniacs hate the Wings?  For me, it’s because most of their fan’s “holier than thou” attitude and condescending tone, which is still prevalent even today.  Nice to see things haven’t changed over the years.

Screw the Wings.

PS, there are still tickets available for game 5 at the Joe.

I think the ‘dislike’ of the wings stems from 3 things for Canes Fans.

1. 2002, animosity always exists in fervor when a team defeats you in a playoff series.  Even more so the later in the playoffs.  The franchise’s first trip deep in the playoffs results in a trip to the finals, and to get dispatched so quickly (that triple overtime game was a killer)

2. Detroit fans everywhere.  Stay with me here, Detroit is one of those teams due to success, history, and regional economic diversity that has fans everywhere.  It certainly builds animosity when there are more visiting fans in your building than home team fans.

3. Detroit buying championships.  Detroit is viewed similar to the Yankees, they have had the market and the money to buy the best available players and give large contracts to other non-superstar, but talented, players to keep them in the organization (and thereby out of others).  Toronto has been accused of this but haven’t had the recent success of Detroit.  While this was certainly true with the Montreal teams, that was quite some time ago, and ‘93 was entirely Patrick Roy.  Small market teams generally dislike Large market teams for their ability to spend to the limit to acquire talent.

The beauty of the Stanley Cup playoffs is that the Best team wins.  For your favorite definition of ‘Best’ of course.  A 7 game series gives ample opportunity for the Best team to shine through.  No excuses, you win 4 you’ve proved your better.  Even in 2002 wink

What “Dougie” fails to mention is that the only reason the drive around the RBC Center was the parade route is because Fayetteville Street was torn up--and there was no way downtown traffic on Hillsborough was going to be stopped or diverted during rush hour. They didn’t do it for State, they sure as hell weren’t going to do it for the Hurricanes.

But what do I know, I’m just a Hurricanes fan.

Posted by The Acid Queen from Raleigh, NC  on  05/16  at  12:11 AM

I know I’m coming late to the party, I hadn’t watched game 2 until last night.

The Ducks tying goal was a complete gift. It should have been disallowed under rule 75.8, part ix:

78.5 Disallowed Goals - Apparent goals shall be disallowed by the Referee and the appropriate announcement made by the Public Address Announcer for the following reasons:
...
(ix) When a goaltender has been pushed into the net together with the puck after making a save.

Now I understand that this condition is not eligible for video review (per 39.4). But no goal signal was made on the ice, so there wasn’t really anthing to disallow...so maybe they could have weighed in this factor when they decided to award the goal in the ‘war room’? I guess it’s kind of a gray area.
