What the heck. How ‘bout a live blog? We’ll start it here and even invite the Canes bloggers to join in. And for you Cane fans shafted out of TV coverage tonite, here’s a gift...courtesy of Matt Saler, a Wing fan.
To help you pass the time until the puck drops? Here’s Bruce MacLeod.
The Montreal beat writer couldn’t resist.
“It must be nice to cover a team that wins so often,” he said. “All we have here are controversies. Every now and then controversy is fun, but when it’s every day you hate it.”
This is coming from a writer in the most hockey crazy city in the world.

Another empty JLA. I’m tired of listing the reasons.

You’d think all the Lions fans downtown could have found it in themselves to head down to the Joe for a game in which they stand a chance of seeing a win from the home team…

Mikael Samuelsson has now gone seven games without a goal. He has additional streaks of 8 and 5 games without scoring for a total of 3 goals all year.

Canes faithful aren’t going to like that. “More evidence of pro-Wings bias!” or some such thing.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 06:17 PM ET
And just as I wrote that, they’ve given that goal to Samuelsson.

1-0, Wings already looked like they were on a PP.
Anyone else notice how much space (respect) the Wings defense is giving the Canes.

His 4th of the season? That means he’s on target for what? 12 this year?
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 12/09/07 at 06:17 PM ET
Fil’s definitely worked on his defensive game more than anything else this season - maybe in the second half, he’ll wake up. We can only hope.

On this 5-on-3, it’s painfully obvious that the 2nd Unit was out there… Too bad the Eurotwins were rested…
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 06:21 PM ET
Er, that should be “too bad the Eurotwins weren’t rested.

Kronwall seems to forget that he’s got some offensive talent out there with him on the second unit. Lots of shots from the point when he could use moves we know he has to get deeper.

These Belle Tire commercials are almost enough to make me quit watching games and listen in on the radio instead…
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 06:36 PM ET
This would not be a good time to get into penalty trouble, guys.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 06:36 PM ET
By my count, Wings have now killed off 25 consecutive opposing power plays.

Carolina: “Just the third team to miss the playoffs after a Cup victory.”
I love that.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 06:40 PM ET
“Two best offensive teams in hockey.” Whatever. Wings 15-3 in shots.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 12/09/07 at 06:42 PM ET
This is a bit of a snooze.
Both teams are trying real hard not to hurt themselves.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd on 12/09/07 at 06:46 PM ET
My guess is that it’ll pick up early in the 3rd.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 12/09/07 at 06:53 PM ET
Thanks for the link, I posted it for those who might not have Center Ice.
Hopefully the Canes can muster more than 3 shots on goal the next period.
Posted by Bubba from Raleigh, NC on 12/09/07 at 06:57 PM ET
Ouch. Can’t let up even for a second, obviously.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:02 PM ET
Great play by Cole, and Sam’s streak of ineffectiveness continues.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 12/09/07 at 07:03 PM ET
Great pass by Cheli there - too bad we don’t get a goal for hitting Ward’s mask.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:07 PM ET
I think it’s Cleary’s goal - Johan was close, but missed it.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:10 PM ET
Don’t think that was interference, Mick.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:16 PM ET
Looks like it’s picking up the pace. If it slows down again, just scroll down a couple of posts, and watch the Hasek-Gaborik aerial acrobat clip. That’s not gonna get old for a loooong time.

That’s the first time I’ve noticed Staal tonight.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:18 PM ET
Where’d that shot come from, Andreas?
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:25 PM ET
Lilja is the most gifted offensive dman in the league. We should all remind ourselves of that from time to time.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 12/09/07 at 07:26 PM ET
If Lilja keeps this up, I’m gonna have to say something nice about him before long.
Posted by dougie on 12/09/07 at 07:26 PM ET
Man, that was a hell of a shot.
Posted by ColBerdan from San Jose on 12/09/07 at 07:27 PM ET
That could have been a lot worse. Good to see Hank stepping up for Datsyuk, though.
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:28 PM ET
Filppula is always inexplicably falling like that…
Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids, MI on 12/09/07 at 07:31 PM ET
Nothing says family fun like five failed clearing attempts. Have we completely forgotton how to lift the puck out of the zone?
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 12/09/07 at 07:57 PM ET
Oh no...no they didn’t. That Larionov hightlight has to hurt all our Cane fans watching on the internet tonite. Damn shame they went and did that.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 12/09/07 at 08:05 PM ET
Did Dats have a smile on his face on the way to the net? Sure looked like it. Classic.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 12/09/07 at 08:22 PM ET
Another night, another steal in the neutral zone, another highlight reel goal for Datsyuk. On frigging fire.
Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC on 12/09/07 at 08:23 PM ET
Yhat woke me up .
catch-up hockey is a bitch, eh.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd on 12/09/07 at 08:23 PM ET
Ward looked like last years Ozzie on Homers goal.
Posted by HockeyTownTodd on 12/09/07 at 08:25 PM ET
Boy, I’m sure glad I didn’t send that post about letting the Canes stay in the game too long, and how I was geting a little antsy.
Posted by dougie on 12/09/07 at 08:25 PM ET
And another entertaining finish to a game that was already in the bag.
Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA on 12/09/07 at 08:26 PM ET
Love seeing the Wings continue to fire with less than :20 left, especially against this team.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

How Others View The A2Y 19
"Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on."
--St. Louis Game Time
"I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site."
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields
"I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season."
--Mile High Hockey
"I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…"
--In The Cheap Seats
"It's just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don't deserve their team."
--Thhom
"I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think."
--Drew Sharp
"Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better."
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont
"Have you ever *read* A2Y? Its the most opinionated, juvenile stuff i've read."
--Paul Nicholson
"I actually like the Detroit team and have a sh&% load of respect for them, but their fans are the biggest douches next to Canadians."
--KStewy, PensBlog Commenter
"Just when it looks like we have bottomed out, the 19 hit a new low."
-A2Y legend, Hockeytown Todd
"And for the record, I don't hate the Red Wings, I hate their fans."
