About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site.”
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”

POOL:  HOW LONG INTO THE NBC BROADCAST BEFORE DOUCHE CANOE ATTRIBUTES THE WINGS GAME 1 WIN TO LUCK AND A SERIES SWEEP BY NASHVILLE IS INEVITABLE?

My guess:  15 seconds.

Posted by RWBill from Richmond, VA  on  04/12  at  01:50 PM

Douche Canoe was on the WDIV pregame with Mick and Bernie.  I only caught the last part where Bernie asked him if he was ever scared to be the guy between the benches.

Alright.  So everyone agrees that nobody’s going to text the scores to the Chief, right? I mean, I think I have his number here somewhere, you know, in case you want to just call and say hi.  Maybe pass along some bowling tips. But you absolutely aren’t going to text him, right?

Because that would be wrong.

Posted by RWBill from Richmond, VA  on  04/12  at  02:54 PM

Good to say Chelios back on the ice. Especially for this game...nobody’s going to touch his record for decades.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  04/12  at  02:55 PM

It’s bad enough listening to Ed-zo, Douchie Douche, and Doc rim job Bubba, but now the refs are getting in on the action, too?

Awesome.

Posted by mudshark from Divetown, Colorado  on  04/12  at  02:59 PM

I’m not sure if you guys have talked about this, as I usually don’t read the Wings posts, but I was just wondering how there could possibly be SO many empty seats at the Joe?  I know they’d been having a little struggle with attendance this season, but in the playoffs??? Why?

Posted by NHLJeff from Boston, MA  on  04/12  at  03:00 PM

Intermission now Douche explains that, inspite of what’s on the scoreboard, Nashville is actually leading the game.

Posted by RWBill from Richmond, VA  on  04/12  at  03:00 PM

Whew. First caution flag of the day.

They are sold out!!! Maybe some people could not make it!

Posted by dwingsrock  on  04/12  at  03:01 PM

@RWB...not to stand up for Douche, but Bubba is doing alot better this game.

Posted by jrl123  on  04/12  at  03:03 PM

What game are the announcers watching?  Are they blind?  Are they drunk? Maybe they are figgen biased pr--Ks!

Posted by dwingsrock  on  04/12  at  03:04 PM

Jeff it’s because Detroit is a premiere major league city with multiple sports teams, the fact that the Tigers have sold 20,000 more season tickets than 3 years ago impacts how many people will also pay for NHL playoff tickets, esp first round where the Red Wings have been for 17 straight seasons.  Compare this to Vancouver where the Canucks are the only show in town so in the rare event when they do make the playoffs it’s a big deal.

Posted by RWBill from Richmond, VA  on  04/12  at  03:04 PM

Anyone else notice the little tape thingy next to Douche at the beginning of the game on the wings side of the posts between the bench?  Can’t remember what it said, but it was there at the beginning of the last game too...I think it was E.H.M.B. or something like that…

Very good first period.  I think bubba is thinking that they can take it, but Dom is literally standing on his head.  Thank God.

Posted by eyesris from Georgia  on  04/12  at  03:06 PM

Oh geez, these guys should just blow Arnott on camera and get it over with.

Posted by Jennifer  on  04/12  at  03:06 PM

jrl
for sure Preds had a good first period.  Wings need to lock down the D zone like the first game.

Posted by RWBill from Richmond, VA  on  04/12  at  03:06 PM

I have to agree with Duthie. Based on the ONE replay NBC showed, it looked like the puck went over the line just before Bonk knocked the net off.

I take it I’m not the only one who noticed the tone of disappointment in McGuire’s voice when he talked about the too many men penalty?

The Wings have been good offensively, but the Predators had the edge in that period. If not for Dom, Nashville would have a decent lead going into the second.

I guess they aren’t going call charging in this series.

Posted by Matt Saler  on  04/12  at  03:07 PM

Behind Ellis’ left shoulder there’s a chick with a red V neck top with huge jugs.

Sweater puppies…

|| Jennifer || Thanks for that visual.  < gag >

Posted by RWBill from Richmond, VA  on  04/12  at  03:08 PM

Jen. Really, what the he--! Arnott....not playing well in the playoffs is he? Unless that changes...we will see.

Posted by dwingsrock  on  04/12  at  03:09 PM

I can’t believe it.  The NHL has actually done a commercial that features a Wing.  Go Z!

And now back to our regularly scheduled Red Wings Don’t Exist Broadcast.

Posted by jrl123  on  04/12  at  03:09 PM

|| Cracker Barrel on I-65 || Jebus, where are you O-Joe?

Posted by RWBill from Richmond, VA  on  04/12  at  03:10 PM

NHLJeff, I think it can be summed up in four words: Lower Bowl Ticket Holders.  I seriously think the Wings season tickets were such a hot item for so long that the executive types that can afford the them don’t want to give them up...but they apparently have betting things to do that show up.  It drives me nuts to see those seats empty.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  04/12  at  03:10 PM

Well, the tongue bath that they’re giving them is enough to make me gag. Does everyone in the media hate the Wings? It’s frustrating that they’re always so disparaging about the Wings and yet sucking up to everyone else.

Posted by Jennifer  on  04/12  at  03:11 PM

Jealousy is so unbecoming of you Mr. Douche…

Posted by Mike from La-La Land  on  04/12  at  03:12 PM

WTF?.....The little bald fellers with the microphones sure like the Preds, but they seem to revel in the aura of all that is TuTu...and it’s so cute that his number is two two....can’t wait till they figure that one out.

D-Mac is on the road to a Gordie Howe hat trick....it’s turtle time!

Posted by Rumbear from Sandy Eggo  on  04/12  at  03:13 PM

Gabriel… a lot of the lower bowl season ticket holders also have Olympia Room passes. So a lot of the executive types hang out down there during the games schmoozing and boozing.

Posted by Jennifer  on  04/12  at  03:13 PM

Huh. On second thought, that latest replay shows that the net was starting to move when the puck went over the line. That should mean no goal.

Posted by Matt Saler  on  04/12  at  03:13 PM

Amazing how disappointed Doc and Edzo are that the refs don’t count Nashville “goals” that cross the line as the net comes off…

Hope the Hasek Club Car has a barf bucket, cuz I’m gonna hurl…

Posted by mudshark from Divetown, Colorado  on  04/12  at  03:14 PM

NBC a little slow on that no-goal from Bonk in the net. That was just as close as the Calgary game the other nite with Iginla in the net, and the Flames got that one.

Posted by Nate A from metro Detroit  on  04/12  at  03:14 PM

Eyesris, yep, saw that too...I don’t remember the letters, but I did a mental check to make sure none of them incuded “D.C.”

Lucky F’in bounce for Draper.  I wasn’t sure about putting Sammy and Hudler out there...I really thought he would have put a couple more veterans out.  Shows you how much I know.

Oh...and DWing, from your question like an hour or so ago: Yeah, that was of course a total a BS call, but I’m not surprised he didn’t get the benefit of the doubt. Hasek is one of the worst overactors in the league. It’s downright embarrassing to see him flopping around as much as he does when someone gets too close.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  04/12  at  03:34 PM

Why does Doc have to apologize to DC for interrupting him?  The Wings have the play in the offensive zone, it’s not time to talk about whatever’s paddling the canoe’s brain.

C’MON LILJA! You call that a shot? You just passed the freakin puck to the goalie.

Maybe DC should go give Dumont a backrub to make him feel better.

I wish Mickey had a contract with NBC. He’s awesome.

Posted by Jennifer  on  04/12  at  04:09 PM

Nah, dwing, they have to do interviews for the game they’re covering while the game is going on.

It covers up they’re ineptness at play-by-play.

I love Mickey! I met Dan in Nashville at a game...he is cool, too!

Posted by jrl123  on  04/12  at  04:12 PM

OK guys, I get your all Wings fans, but Mickey Redmond is not THAT great.

Yeah, Doc Emrick and his 35 years calling hockey games and his total ineptness is just showing through now.  If anything, letting Doc take over more of the show would help the broadcast.

Also, Pierre and Milbury more phantom coaching.

Pierre: I have 2 Cups…

Yeah, as an assistant.  To Bob Johnson and Scotty Bowman!  With Lemieux and Jagr and Francis!  How much could you have done?  What did you blowdry Jagr’s curls every night?

“Hasek’s been okay. Is okay good enough, Pierre?”

@Steve...Mick’s great at color commentary.

Despite him missing most of one lung.

Posted by jrl123  on  04/12  at  04:15 PM

That’s fair, but at NBC it’s not their job to be versed in Wings hockey.

Posted by Steve from New Jersey  on  04/12  at  04:16 PM

It’s not their job to cheer lead whoever is playing the Wings either.  Or isn’t supposed to be anyway.

Posted by Steve from New Jersey  on  04/12  at  05:01 PM

The CMOI is in as good of form as we’ve seen him in the last two years.

We also haven’t seen the breaks go the Wings way this much in the last two years.

Hopefully these are good omens.

Even so, this game was still the ultimate stress train game, even though at the end of it it was pretty lopsided in Detroit’s favor.

Posted by Nathan  on  04/12  at  05:06 PM

Best line of the night comes from Doc’s broadcast partner at the end of the game: “It all came down to Dom being in control at the end there.”

In control? Are you freaking kidding me. That crazy mutherf#!ker spent the last thirty seconds without a stick, flopping around on his back like a crab trying to somehow get back in the water. There’s no doubt that he’s at his best when he’s completely out of control.

As for the game, we all knew Dom would give up at least one “goofy” goal in the series. But who would have guessed the building would give up a goofy goal. Crazy stuff!

And what about Homer? I knew he’d come back with renewed energy after his forced layoff, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him play like such a beast as he has in the first two games. The Flying Circus is virtually unstoppable now.

Man, I’ve so wound up right now I may have to either get off the train and run alongside for a few miles or open another bottle of wine to calm down.

Hmmm. Porter!

Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids  on  04/12  at  05:13 PM

nice win.  very nice win.  if not for the lucky bounce off the glass for Nashville it’s a 4-1 win.  Hasek solid in net, Wings outshoot them badly, defense is solid, very physical play.  game 1 looked like the regular season up a notch, today looked like a playoff game.  win one in Nashville, series done in 5.

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach  on  04/12  at  05:15 PM

That’s fair, but at NBC it’s not their job to be versed in Wings hockey.

it’s their job to be versed in hockey, which includes Wings AND Predators for today.  obviously they are only versed in Predators hockey.  you seriously don’t see what’s wrong with that?

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach  on  04/12  at  05:17 PM

We had a little issue with comments after #200 not showing up.  Now fixed so continue on....

Posted by Paul from Motown Area  on  04/12  at  05:36 PM

Talk about snakebitten--Filppula had at least three goals gift-wrapped and handed to him and missed every one.  He still has that annoying habit of trying to stickhandle through people instead of just taking the puck wide and letting everyone else set up.

Franzen missed a couple of gimmes too.  I still can’t believe how much he improved this year.  He’s become much faster and a better puckhandler.

There are some people here who owe Samuelsson an apology.  He was superb today, especially in the first two periods.

Remarkable game by Draper, too.  If he had any skill left in him, he probably would have had another goal or two.

There were a few good shot blocks in that game, too.  That’s something I’ve always wanted to see more of from the Wings.  (Although having seen two potentially disastrous injuries already these playoffs from shot blocks, I’m not too disappointed when someone like Datsyuk doesn’t go down for a point shot in the second period.)

After only two games and six goals (excluding the empty netter), 14 out of 20 Red Wings have a point.  The forwards without a point are Cleary, Samuelsson, and Filppula are the forwards; Stuart, Lilja, and Chelios the defencement.  What happened to our lack of secondary scoring?  It’s not because the top line isn’t producing, either--they scored half of those six goals.

It pains me to say, but once again Tootoo was the best Predator player.  Unlike last game, he was even better than Ellis this time around.  There’s just no way Nashville can win unless that changes.  Arnott and Dumont have been invisible.

Posted by Ryan from Toronto  on  04/12  at  05:42 PM

Replace Hudler with Abdlekader!  And I apologize to Samuelsson.  He’s playing well.  Hasek, Defense, all look good but Lilja.  Forwards look good, except Hudler.

Posted by TDeters from Washington, DC  on  04/12  at  05:47 PM

Oh, also worth pointing out that the hits ended up 26-25 for Nashville, but the Wings had a slight edge most of the game.  Interesting fact: the only two Red Wings not credited with a hit were the Dynamic Duo, Lidstrom and Rafalski.  The Predators had seven players not credited with a hit.  If it was ever Nashville’s game plan to hit the Wings into submission, they flew off the rails somewhere.

Posted by Ryan from Toronto  on  04/12  at  05:49 PM

Whew, thought I busted A2Y with my comment @ 200.

Woo-hoo!  Way to go, Angry Rabbit!

Posted by Keith from Grass Lake  on  04/12  at  06:24 PM

Ok, I’m getting tired of all the whining in the stress train.  The turd-fondling Douche Canoe deserves everything he’s getting, Millbury has somehow managed to bother me even more.  However, I don’t think Doc is getting a fair shake in here.  I know, I know - 3 straight days of frenetic nerve-fueled binge drinking didn’t exactly set us up for logical analysis.  Right.  That said, let’s not become DC’s ourselves; Doc’s as solid as they come and his call of McCarty’s goal was as genuine as could be without being biased.  Blast away at the Douche Canoe, Millbury and Ol’upchuck - but Doc hasn’t earned any of that.

Bottom line: who gives a rodent’s rump about commentators, predators or anybody not wearing the winged wheel.

Good enough g
