About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site.”
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”

Worst Case Scenario: Lidstrom Helped Off Ice

Update 2233:  St. James and Khan(!) both blogging that John Hahn is claiming Lidstrom’s injury is a sprain, that he was sitting in front of his stall watching the game, and actually wanted to come out for the second.  Hold on to those sighs of relief though and answer this question: Is anyone going to tell the truth about the extent of an injury to Nick Lidstrom when Ken Holland’s trying to work a deal right now in Naples?

Update 2125:  From Khan(!)’s blog (URL below): Wings spokesman John Hahn said it doesn’t appear to be too serious but he’s being held out as a precaution. Hahn said Lidstrom never blacked out and actually wanted to return to the game.

Update 2121: From St. James blog (URL below): “It doesn’t look too serious,” Hahn said, “but he is being kept out as a precaution.”

Update 2108:  Paul Woods reporting a “slight knee injury.”

Nick Lidstrom, and reports from Versus and the Diggers are calling it a right knee injury, was helped off the ice midway through the first in Denver.  Will provide updates here as we get them.
Khan(!)

No word yet on the extent of the injury. Lidstrom needed some assistance to get off the ice and was taken to the training room after a hard hit from Colorado’s Ian Laperriere at 6:10 of the first period. It happened during a Detroit power play as Laperriere hammered Lidstrom against the boards. Lidstrom tried to get up but was wobbling before trainer Piet Van Zant came onto the ice to help him off. Lidstrom’s right leg appeared to get bent in an awkward position.

Aaron Downey, because that’s what he does, beat the Hell out of Laperriere soon after.  And, yes, Laperriere turtled.

All the Diggers have blog entries up regarding Lidstrom.  Check them out for updates:  Khan(!), Niyo, St. James.

Turtled.  Like a little girl.  Meaning no disrespect to little girls. Then he gets up chirping .... I hope Downey tags him again.

Sweet Jesus.

I’m going to cry.

Posted by Pete K from Chicago, IL  on  02/18  at  10:01 PM

That was, without a doubt, Downey’s best fight. You could see in his expression that this wasn’t one of those “gentlemanly” encounters with the other team’s enforcer that Downey usually engages in...and rightly so. Laperriere clearly used his elbow to drive Nick’s head into the glass. I hope Downey chases him around all night shouting, “Here turtle. Here turtle.”

It’s pretty obvious that the Dive’s game plan was to “run” at the Wings every chance they got. But, as Babcock has said before, the way to make a team pay for doing that is to stuff pucks in the net.

On a side note, anyone remember Smyth’s name being called tonight. I don’t.

You want adversity?  You got it!

Posted by Hap from Grand Rapids  on  02/18  at  10:27 PM

I don’t feel like crying.

I feel like taking the post from my mailbox that the snowplow broke off, finding the driver of said snowplow, and cracking him in the skull until his brains squish out through the cracks.

I’ll feel better in the morning, but right now I want to smash something into teeny tiny pieces.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  02/18  at  10:31 PM

1) You DO NOT hurt our captain, Nick Lidstrom.
2) Downey took care of business, just like a pro.  I love him for that.

Baroque said that? So much for our paragon of reasonable, rational thought. Mess with St. Nick and look out world! Guess Ian’s lucky it was Downey that took him on tonight. If Miss B had been there it could have gotten very ugly.  cool grin

BABS!!!!  I just fell in love with that man again…

He looked like he was going to KILL Granato…

Someone please tell me what happened to LIDS!

So, I get that Laperiere hit him but the announcer just said that it was a clean hit. is that right??

That’s the way it’s supposed to work. Touch our captain and ye shall pay. Good on Downie. Did he get an instigator? (hope not)

Paul, I didn’t have my cookies on. Sorry. Your site is still awesomeness emobodied

Osrt lost his cookies again.  Wuss.

Nice bounce back by Osgood especially.

Heh heh.  He is one of my favorites.  Aren’t I allowed to call for a bloody head on a pike once in a while?  I’ll be more rational tomorrow - promise.  smile

I don’t buy knee injury on Lidstrom.  He didn’t appear to be limping.  Looked like he got his bell rung.  He might have passed his concussion test, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t get rattled around pretty good.

Posted by PaulinMiamiBeach  on  02/18  at  11:45 PM

There’s a story brewing somewhere...just north of kalamazoo

Posted by johnnygloveside  on  02/18  at  11:46 PM

Ok, so I was supposed to stay up all night and work on papers and such. Now, I just want to break that mofo’s elbow in three places…

...maybe leave him some cookies as a consolation prize for “finishing his check.”

I say sign Mac, let him play in GR and if we play the Dive in the playoffs, we can bring him up and put Downey and Draper with them. They might deliver Baroque’s request for a head on a stick.

Posted by Osrt  on  02/19  at  12:04 AM

I NEED VIDEOS!!!! My school doesn’t carry Versus. Of course Versus had to have this game… Please anyone with videos it would be much appreciated. Sounds like the rivalry might have some fuel left in the tank after all…

Posted by Sp4r7an  on  02/19  at  12:25 AM

Yah, I’d say tonight’s game just made it about 50% more likely that D-Mac will be back in Hockeytown before the playoffs.

I still can’t get two images from tonight’s game out of my mind. One, the “lost” look in Nick’s eyes after the hit. I’ve never seen anything remotely resembling that from him. And two, the laser stare that Downey had on his face when the refs were trying to break up the fight and he was still pounding Lady Laperirre.

Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids  on  02/19  at  12:29 AM

“Without a doubt Downey’s best fight”?
Do you mean his best fight as a Red Wing?  Maybe so, but he’s had better fights before.  One that comes to mind was his one-punch decimation of Jesse Boulerice back in 2003 when Downey was with the Stars and Boulerice with the Canes.

Anyway, the Lidstrom injury isn’t the end of the world.  A week to ten days is nothing.  “Worst case scenario”?  Hardly.  Here in Carolina, we’ve lost Brind’Amour for SIX MONTHS, plus we had already lost Justin Williams for the season.  Very few of us are talking about the end of the world.  You shouldn’t be, either.

Posted by red and black hockey from North Carolina  on  02/19  at  04:01 AM

The Wings top three d-men - gone.  Albeit all returning within 2 weeks, but it’s gonna be a long 2 weeks.  The Griffins are going to have to call up a few OHL’er d-men.
But, yes, when you lose your top key players for any amount of time, it hurts.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  02/19  at  09:14 AM

Do you mean his best fight as a Red Wing?

Yup, that’s what I meant R&B;. While I love the Boulerice “fight” video (especially the bell sound they add in the slow-mo replay), that one has Downey’s classic I’m-a-gentleman-fighter start and end to it. Last night, I think the only one more pissed off than Downey was Miss B. That showed me a different side of Aaron (and Miss B)...one that I liked a lot.

...we’ve lost Brind’Amour for SIX MONTHS, plus we had already lost Justin Williams for the season.  Very few of us are talking about the end of the world.  You shouldn’t be, either.

Well, the difference between a Hurricane fan and a Wings fan is that you guys never stress about anything hockey related. “We won the Cup? Nice.” “We didn’t make the playoffs? Oh well, more time for NASCAR.”

Here in the frozen north, where hockey is actually considered more important than NASCAR (except among transplanted southerners), we stress about everything related to the Wings. “We won the Cup!!! Who cares if I don’t have a job. Life is sweeeeet!!!.” “We didn’t make the playoffs? Where’s my gun, Maude? I’m shootin’ the TV and then I’m shootin’ myself!!!”

So, while we feel the pain of a team losing a great player like Brind’Amour (probably more than most people in your state do), you’ll have to bear with us as we work our way through the angst and anguish we’re experiencing today because of the two-week loss of our Captain. You see, we’re in uncharted territory here. St. Nick has only missed something like 20 games in 18 years, so ithis will take some getting used to.

Anyway, for me, the best news out of last night’s game (other than Lady Laperriere’s beatdown, Granato’s meltdown and the whole Dive team’s “put down"), was seeing Meech play more minutes than any Wings defenseman...and look pretty darn good doing it.

Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids  on  02/19  at  10:10 AM

I about threw up at the game last night when Nick went down.  Then, it turned to rage.  The fans at the Can were cheering when the Captain got hurt.  I was furious.  Fans were getting on me when Downey flipped off the crowd asking me if I was “proud of this team.” And I responded, “Are you proud of your fans cheering an injured player?” The Avs quit after the first period and I couldn’t care less.  I just spent the first period frantically texting my friends trying to find out what happened to Lidstrom.  Knee injury?  I have my doubts.  He did not know where he was after that hit.

Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO  on  02/19  at  10:29 AM

Downey is the man.  Bring back Mac and nobody will be calling the Wings “soft”.  You don’t mess with Nick son.  I was also proud of the young guns (and the ancient one) stepping up their play.  Makes me proud to be 24.

Posted by Bryan from Athens, OH  on  02/19  at  02:53 PM

I’m with you OTC.  I thought when Nick went down everyone stepped up — and the Wings’ have a lot more defensive depth now than they had 24 hours ago.  If it’s true that Lidstrom will be gone only 7-14 days, this may actually turn out to be a real blessing for Detroit.  Nick gets a pre-playoff rest and his team grows up a lot in his absence.

Different circumstances, but just maybe Laperriere provided Detroit with some of the same glue that Lemieux provided all those years ago.

Highlights of the Wings/Slides Game 2/19/08

After the hit on Lidstrom, the next guy I worried about was Chelios.  Three of our top four defensemen are out with injuries.  If Chelios is next to go down, Lilja and Lebda are our top defensemen.

Yes, I was that scared for Chelios.
