About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

Wanna Feel Smart?

Does confusion make you sad?  When you read words like “enigma” and phrases like “Thanks Gary. Ass”, do you wonder why mean people speak in languages you don’t understand?  Fret no longer friend!  The A2Y Glossary will bring you great joy and enlightenment.

How Others View The A2Y 19

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I realize it’s the slow summer season, but can this guy tone down the tough-guy histrionics? His posts are fatiguing on an otherwise excellent site.”
--A2Y Fan, Eternal_Fields

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont

Welcome to the brilliance that only weary Wing fans can offer in the midst of a way West swing.  Live blog will be confined to the comment section tonite.  Remember my prediction:  the hype that accompanied the Circus’ arrival in Edmonton can only mean an end to Hank’s point streak.

Tuned in late and have to watch on mute for awhile...I see Franzen’s in, so who’s sitting out?

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  10/30  at  09:44 PM

Gabe, Downey and Ellis out; Franzen and Drake with a full shield are in.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  09:45 PM

Anyone happen to notice any mention among the diggers of Osgood’s illfated attempt to clear/score the other night in Vancouver?

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  09:52 PM

I haven’t, although Babcock mentioned it right after the game.  Said he didn’t know what Osgood was thinking, but chuckled a little since the team won.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  09:56 PM

Even if Lilja didn’t make knee on knee contact there, it wouldn’t have been an issue if he’d hit Hemsky the way the play set up...right in the chest. He could have knocked him to next week and it would have been clean...but he either sidestepped him to avoid it, or moved to trip him.  Pretty shady any way you look at it.  Don’t even frigging tell me I’m the only one staying up to watch this game.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  09:58 PM

Just saw it again.  Good hit. Sorry Andres.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  09:58 PM

Wow, that was a nice mullet that Drake sported in his younger days

Posted by Defenseman from Grand Rapids  on  10/30  at  10:00 PM

I can vouch for the popularity of mullets in Marquette in the late 80’s dman.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:03 PM

The view looks so strange with the benches on the same side as the camera.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:05 PM

I hadn’t even noticed it Baroque. Maybe because I’ve had one too many Gatorinis.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:06 PM

And there is the required “Chelios is really old” reference.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:07 PM

Crappy pass, Sam.  :(

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:11 PM

I can’t think of another pro athlete who goes by the given name of Dick.  Like his coach and a helmetless existence, I think Tarnstrom may be the last of a dying breed.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:12 PM

Datsyuk never stops working.

“I can vouch for the popularity of mullets in Marquette in the late 80’s dman.”

Did the Duke just own up to having a mullet..?

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/30  at  10:16 PM

Agreed Baroque. Speaking of odd video, it just me or do broadcasts from some arenas look like they’re fresh out of 1989?

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  10/30  at  10:16 PM

Who’s spot did Franzen take?

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  10:18 PM

Franzen has looked excellent for his first game back.  He’ll likely lose a little steam later on, though.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:18 PM

Yes Gramps, the Duke had a mullet.  It was terrible.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:19 PM

Gabriel:  Some of them are so dim it’s hard to watch.  Rangers broadcasts always look bad to me, and Chicago is really ill-lit.  They’d better improve things before November 11th and their first home broadcast of the century!  In HD, no less.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:21 PM

Is Shareen Saski one of the twins Dave Rozema and Kirk Gibson married?

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:21 PM

Agree the games on MSG are terrible.

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  10:23 PM

Who’s spot did Franzen take?

Ellis, I think.  I can’t keep track of who is on a line with whom most of the time.

Drake in for Downey is logical, though.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:25 PM

I don’t know where the put the cameras in MSG, either, but the players look like ants scittering around on a white plate.  Ugh.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:27 PM

That should be “they” and probably “skittering.” Can’t spell when tired.

Stupid plate tectonics.  :(

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:29 PM

Just updated the glossary a bit.  Took out some terms that never really caught on (nicknames for Cleary, John Hahn), updated Datsyuk’s and added the Monty Babcock Flying Circus.  http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/A2Y/glossary/

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:33 PM

The Wild’s home jersey on HD look horrible, makes you want to go x-mas shopping.

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  10:34 PM

I like what Dallas Drake does for the team, but I’ve seen nothing...not a single shift or play...that indicates he brings anything to the table offensively.  I know that’s not his role, but man.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:36 PM

The Wild’s home jersey on HD look horrible, makes you want to go x-mas shopping.

Walmart will be happy.  They are already dropping prices on some toys in a desperate attempt to get customers to shop earlier, hoping that then they will spend more money.

I hate seeing a knee twist like that.  Ouch.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:37 PM

You took out Buckets?? That was one of my favs.

And yet another point...the streak continues!

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  10/30  at  10:38 PM

You were wrong, Chief.

Posted by soft watch from ontario  on  10/30  at  10:38 PM

Gotta love that passing, amazes me everytime

Posted by Defenseman from Grand Rapids  on  10/30  at  10:38 PM

I frigging told you guys there was no way Edmonton would stop Zetterberg’s streak.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:38 PM

Zetterberg must have been tired of getting assists.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:38 PM

BING-BANG-GOAL!!!!!!

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  10:39 PM

Well, now I look stupid for agreeing with the prediction of Zetterberg’s streak ending tonight.  Eh, I’ll take it, it’s worth it and I’m used to it.

Posted by Clark  on  10/30  at  10:39 PM

Really Gabe?  Damn. I should have asked you guys first.  I don’t think I ever used it after I wrote it. I’ll try to get it back.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:40 PM

Pavel Datsyuk has got to be in the best condition of his life. Every shift is one hundred percent effort.  Much like Robert Lang.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:41 PM

Nice shot.

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  10:42 PM

That was some rip from Staios.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:43 PM

Unstoppable shot.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:43 PM

How can there be that many players screening the OZ, without a too many men on the ice call..?

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/30  at  10:44 PM

How hot is that line!

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  10:46 PM

That was almost very, very bad.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:51 PM

Is it me or does Ozzy look relaxed?

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  10:54 PM

He looks better than I’ve seen him in a long time.  I’m telling you (again) we’re going to have ourselves a goalie controversy this season.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:56 PM

I’d say Ozzie looks relaxed all the time now.  After coming to terms with being the backup, he seems to me to be the calmest I’ve ever seen him.  Mentally tough, something he’s never really been known for.

Posted by Clark  on  10/30  at  10:56 PM

He always seems relaxed.  Every time I hear him talk after a game, I wonder if he’s narcoleptic and going to drop off at any minute.

This is a very scrambly, sloppy period.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  10:57 PM

Holy schnikees. 60 points his last 33 games.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:57 PM

That relaxed look is confidence, and it may come from being told he is no longer the back-up.

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/30  at  10:58 PM

techtonics, narcolepsy, bevy. Quit showing off Baroque.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:58 PM

Oooh Gramps.  You may see that again.  I’ll give you full credit, of course.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  10:59 PM

You got that right Baroque, I think this is the first 30 minute period of the season.

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/30  at  11:00 PM

A mis-spent youth.  I read too much and over-developed my vocabulary.  smile

Bubba’s getting waxed again. Down 3-0 in the second in Calgary.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:03 PM

Bubba is still looking for their first road win

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/30  at  11:04 PM

They are the Flyers of last year!

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  11:05 PM

Was that an EDMONTON powerplay?

Goodness, that was ineffective.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  11:07 PM

Bubba, even more than the lockout, is Little Gary’s legacy.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:07 PM

The flying circus line doesn’t stop.

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  11:08 PM

Unsettled ownership is never good.  Any place I’ve worked, productivity went down the toilet when rumors of layoffs and such started circulating.  The players have got to be sick and tired of being in the midst of being sold/moved/asked how they feel about being sold/moved.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  11:12 PM

Wow, the 2nd period is finally over and it is still 2007.

Wings are looking a little sloppy, winning that 6th in a row is tough.

Rafalski already has 4 SOG...HE IS DUE

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/30  at  11:13 PM

It doesn’t help when you dump all your star players either!

Posted by BHinde from Toldeo,Ohio  on  10/30  at  11:14 PM

Hey Gramps, meant to tell you earlier.  Great questions about why teams are allowed to fill a spot on their roster vacated by a suspended player.  If the league really wanted to clamp down on any number of things, they’d institute that.

Oh, and Stephen A. Smith said on ESPN radio today that the NBA has a better reputation (in terms of player behavior) than the NHL.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:16 PM

Steven A. Smith is a loud-mouthed donkey-butt.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  11:18 PM

That’s what an expanded vocabulary comes up with? Loud-mouthed donkey-butt?

...

I like it.

Posted by Gabriel from San Diego, CA  on  10/30  at  11:19 PM

ESPN’s Pre-season power rankings:

1. San Jose
28. Columbus

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:20 PM

Yes, but they didn’t look like they would be last-season’s-Flyers level horrible.  They lost too much defensive depth to deal with injuries.  Missing Sullivan is hurting them, too.

Rough night for the home teams so far.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  11:24 PM

I thought ignorant, knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing troglodyte--but I reserve that for exceptional morons.  smile

Besides, I’m really lousy at cussing.  My mom didn’t let my dad teach me any good words from his army days when I was young, and now I have a two-year old nephew so I can’t pick up any bad habits.  He’s supposed to learn things like that from his grandfathers, like a normal kid.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  11:29 PM

Did they list some sites Clark? I must have missed it.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:31 PM

Man, they let up on Datsyuk there. That could have been trouble.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:32 PM

In case anyone’s wondering, Edmonton’s 3-0 in shootouts this year.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:34 PM

They listed all the official sites.  Zetterberg’s, Datsyuk’s, Downey’s, RWW (bastards), and Hasek’s company.  I think there was another that I’m forgetting.

Listening to Ken Kal and Paul...yay…

Looks like we’re dominating and the Flying Circus is doing its thing…

OK, so Paul’s trivia question: Who holds the Edmonton record for most PPGs and GWGs?  His hint: they don’t have 500 goals in their career.

my guess: Kevin Lowe

Memo to the Detroit Red Wings…

It is still permitted to do the following:

A. Win by more than one goal

B. Score with more than a minute remaining in the period to help the cardiac function of your fans.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/30  at  11:57 PM

Anyone else think the Drake had a good game considering the diving helmet..?

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/30  at  11:59 PM

Night all.  That’s three straight way West games I’ve stayed awake for.  An impressive feat.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  10/30  at  11:59 PM

Oh why win by a big margin when you can raise and crush hopes so wonderfully; we owe them...big.

Chicago and Vancouver, however, I want to stomp all over.

read y’all tomorrow.

Posted by srt  on  10/31  at  12:02 AM

Considering everything, Drake was fine.  I just like Downey better.

I am so happy that there wasn’t overtime.  Yay!  Time for a little more sleep before work so I won’t be dragging (hopefully).

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/31  at  12:04 AM

It’s good to see that Penner is still a phantom. Honestly if he wasn’t twice as big as anyone else on the ice I wouldn’t have noticed that he dressed.

Oh and my head nearly exploded during that sweet six minutes of uninterrupted play.

PS, if Drake’s face is still banged up, that means he can’t get into his customary fight per game. Either bring in Downey, or get him to just stop pretending to care about the state his face is in- he already looks like he works as a speed bump during the offseason.

Posted by scheisskopf from Baltimore, Maryland  on  10/31  at  12:44 AM

^^hahaa…

If anyone is interested, NHL.com has highlights posted already. I’m impressed…

Posted by srt  on  10/31  at  12:48 AM

Did anyone know about this Wings TV thing available on NHL.com??  et tu bloggers?

There is some decent pre and post game interview footage; I’m shocked how much reporters don’t/ can’t say. Mannerisms, weird inflections etc.. good stuff… and God forbid, some of their personalities actually come through.

Posted by srt  on  10/31  at  01:06 AM

Did anyone notice the “three stars” of this game?  Oilers PPV picked them:

1. Dwayne Roloson
2. Sam Gagner
3. Chris Osgood

So I suppose the player who nets the game winner with less than half a minute to go isn’t a star of the game?

Posted by BuzzFledderjohn from Frederick, MD  on  10/31  at  11:00 AM

A2Y… if you keep whining about the late games, but you live blog and find all these fanatics willing to stay up with you, how in hell do we convince Gary we’re not gonna take it anymore?  smile

I only made it through two periods.  Just can’t do it anymore, and I still feel like I missed out on some good sleep.  6 minutes of uninterrupted play?

Posted by snafu from Michigan  on  10/31  at  11:18 AM

Had to miss the game since my lovely schedule at work pretty much says I’ll be missing any Tuesday night games for the rest of my life.  Sigh.

I will TiVo Thursday’s game since I will be watching the Sidney Crosby show live at the Can.  I keep missing the live blogs.  Bummer.

Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO  on  10/31  at  11:47 AM

So I suppose the player who nets the game winner with less than half a minute to go isn’t a star of the game?

Not as far as the Oilers are concerned, maybe.

A2Y… if you keep whining about the late games, but you live blog and find all these fanatics willing to stay up with you, how in hell do we convince Gary we’re not gonna take it anymore?

Talk to coworkers and family that have to put up with cranky, sleep-deprived fans the next day!

These live blogs keeps me awake during these early morning games.

Carry on Chief!

That Flip goal smelled like… charred spreadsheet.

Dub, you rock, though your obsession with Thhhhhommy borders on the unhealthy sometimes.  Still, if it inspires you to put together grafix like “There is no links section!” or “Ricci To Garcia,” then fixate on, my brother.  Speaking of him, haven’t seen a whit of him for a while.  Think the challenge to him to post his meticulous thesis paper scared him off?

I read too much and over-developed my vocabulary.

You and me both, Baroque-- I got chewed out in AP History for reading my own books on the subject because I found the course textbooks too simplistic.  Yet again-- I’ve wasted my life.  I shall devote the rest of it to Gatorinis, women, and song.  BTW, I also have a two year-old nephew who I’m not allowed to curse in front of.  He’s slowly learning words like ‘shiznit,’ ‘bizwatch,’ and ‘funk.’

On to the game, which NASN carried and I just finished watching on my lunch break.  Fabulous to see uniterrupted play, and it looks like Fil is shaping up to be the anti-Enigma-- he makes the same clutch plays, has the same moments of brilliance, only without the downside of the laziness and the mullet.  The second line, whether that contains The Mule or Happy, is finally starting to gel.  If it keeps up, things could get very dangerous for opposing teams very soon.

The power-play goal seems almost a token to give Z and Nick their obligatory point per game.  Against teams not so dedicated to playing the trap, they’ll get more.  Still, it was glorious to see passing with such confidence and skill-- play like that will break open any defense in the league.

I’m still not convinced that Lilja isn’t a 7th D, especially when Kronwall comes back.

Jimmy Howard needs to be back with the Griffs ASAP.  Not only do they need him, but he needs all the game time he can get-- this is his make-or-break season.

Chief, keep up the good work with the live blogs.  One early morning I may even join in.

Andrew, I couldn’t agree more about Lilja. Meech has proven his worth. Maybe what happens at practice is different, but in game, he looks like the more sound defender.
