You Are All Losers

If you’re joining me to stay up for this pivotal October matchup, you have issues.  You need to look yourselves in the mirror and determine just what’s important to you in life.  My god.  You’re up?  You’re all pathetic.

Whatever. Crack ‘em if you got ‘em, it’s a late night West Coast live blog courtesy of Gary Leonore Bettman.

2240: What the HELL is a Dive fan transvestite doing in San Jose?  Oh..that’s Ricci. My bad.

2244:  Cool.  Wings wait 4 minutes real time, 90 seconds game time, to take their first penalty.  Outstanding.

2253:  Reaction.  I believe Mike Grier scored first in Game 1 last year didn’t he?  Reaction.  I looked up and saw Brett Lebda with the puck and thought I saw Dino Ciccarelli.  I looked up again and saw Andres Lilja with the puck and threw up in my mouth.

2258:  I think I told you guys this before.  Dallas Drake beat the snot out of my college roommate in a Marquette bar in 1988.  I also think he just got drilled. He was holding his face on the bench, but looking at the replay it looked like a shoulder.

2301: You frigging bastard Dave.  One minute after you make a comment about only one penalty called halfway through the first, one of Gary’s minions rectifies it.  Nice job Dave.

2305
: I swear to sweet baby Jesus I don’t think I’ve watched a single minute of Wing hockey the last four days that didn’t feature Detroit on the penalty kill.

2312
: Gary you little frigging toad.  When you have Wing fans publicly proclaiming their wishes that one of their own players takes a puck in the nuts, you know the scheduling sucks.  That’s what happens Gary.  It’s chaos.

It’s time for Intermission Playhouse!!

Red Sox are up 4-1 so I’m watching tonite’s episode of The Office, because Dwight Shroot is my new favorite tv character, taking over for Newman and before him; Speed Racer.  Before I turn it on, here’s some A2Y stream of consciousness thinking for you:  Hasek is in no danger of losing his job to Chris Osgood. Any of the crap in the papers this morning is just that: Digger crap.  Grigorenko’s back next week then it’s off to Russia to fail for more money with ugly Russian chicks--no offense to any of you Lapeer Russians.  I continued a running argument with a great friend of mine today. Subject? NHL vs. NBA. He’s a huge Pistons fan and says Rasheed Wallace is a “great teammate, a character guy.” I guess if your definition of a great character guy is someone who takes bong hits during tv timeouts than he’s on the money.  Did I really predict Valteri Filppula will score 25 goals this year.  Dammit.  I’m sticking by it.  I’m off to the office. Back for the second.

2341:  Ha.  All you naysayers (mostly the diggers).  Kronwall...what a great play.  Off the schnide.

0001: Holy Schnikees. I fell asleep and missed Zetterberg’s goal.  Thanks Gary. Thanks Dave.

0006
:  Who gave that puck away? Was that Rafalski?  Sharks’ announcers: they’re really buzzing after that second Shark goal.  Arena is silent.

0009:  Nice.  Thornton goes after Zetterberg and Dasyuk pops him from behind...not like THAT Dive fans, jeez...retaliation and a power play.  Brought to you by your future Wing Leadership.

0054. Hi. I’m still here. I was resting.  Not asleep. Resting.  I did miss Ellis’ goal, but only because things were going on here.  Firetrucks, dancing girls and puppies were out in the street. I had to watch the festivities. I wasn’t asleep.  And I saw the Datsyuk goal, the ho-hum two points for Zetterberg.

0104
:  Reaction: Wings look better the last four minutes than they have the entire game.  That could be due to the fact that I slept through the previous 16. I’m not sure.

0116
: Good win. As Matt pointed out, it may have come at a price as Rafalski may be hurt along with Drake. Great elbow to the chops of Thornton by Chelios. Made me well up with pride and happiness.  I’m going to bed. You can’t stop me. Thanks Gary.  Ass.

I took tomorrow off from work.

I’m still a loser, but for different reasons. smile

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  10:39 PM

I’m sure I just saw some empty seats!

Who’s the losers now?!
tongue rolleye

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/18  at  10:44 PM

Does Lilja know how to clear the puck? Send *him* dude to Siberia not Chelios!

Posted by srt  on  10/18  at  10:54 PM

Nice mugging of Drake… jeebus.

Well, at least they called it.

Oh.

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/18  at  10:57 PM

Could we export the refs to Siberia, too?

Maybe if we’re lucky they will all be eaten by bears.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:00 PM

We’ve made it halfway through the period and only one penalty called thus far?  Little Gary can’t be happy.

Posted by Dave  on  10/18  at  11:00 PM

Shut up, Dave!

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:02 PM

I hate to sound like a homer, but I’m seriously beginning to suspect a conspiracy. Maybe Cheli’s involvement with the Bettman/Saskin nonsense?

Great, another penalty ‘Wings.

The penguins can’t seriously be this incompetent, can they?

Ugh.

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/18  at  11:02 PM

Now we’re playing new NHL hockey!!

Posted by Dave  on  10/18  at  11:05 PM

Okay, this is f%#@*ing ridiculous.

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/18  at  11:05 PM

The refs can be this incompetent, I just don’t think they are.  You don’t blow calls like this without meaning to.

Posted by Clark  on  10/18  at  11:06 PM

2 more penalties in the last 5 minutes… Good call Dave.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/18  at  11:06 PM

Time for pong, maybe?

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:07 PM

Dave - no more talky please.

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/18  at  11:08 PM

Okay, nice block by Lilja there on the PK.

Posted by Dave  on  10/18  at  11:09 PM

“good block by Lilja!”

Now *there’s* something you don’t hear often…

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/18  at  11:09 PM

Nice block, Lilja.

(Don’t believe I just said that.)

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:10 PM

Lilja blocks an open net…

Is it bad to hope the puck hit him in the junk?

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/18  at  11:10 PM

I swear to sweet baby Jesus

Go Ricky Bobby!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/18  at  11:12 PM

Crap, that should have been a goal!!

Posted by Dave  on  10/18  at  11:14 PM

oooooh, so close.....

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:15 PM

Is it bad to hope the puck hit him in the junk?

Wait until Quincey’s hand heals, then there is another option if Meech doesn’t work out.

Then he can take a puck for the good of the team.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:19 PM

This must be what it feels like to play the wings; you know, a team that controls the puck most of the time. grrrr

Posted by srt  on  10/18  at  11:19 PM

That kind of thing must drive San Jose fans bonkers.  The team looks good (in spite of the anime logo), the talent is there, they develop good young players, and yet they can’t manage to get it done in the playoffs.

It’s easy to say that one of these years they will put it together, but how much longer do they have?  The team can’t stay together forever-the salary cap ensures that-and at some point you’d figure they have to get over the hump before they start losing players to free agency and the veterans’ production starts to drop off.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:26 PM

And the Sharks don’t have Mike O’Connell in Boston to keep feeding them top-level players for a bag of pucks, don’t forget that.

Posted by Clark  on  10/18  at  11:29 PM

If you can’t benefit from one Thornton trade, you don’t deserve another.  wink

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:32 PM

It’s not two Thorntons, but Boston did hand McLaren to San Jose as well.  Tell me there’s this much buzz about the Sharks without those two guys.

Posted by Clark  on  10/18  at  11:36 PM

Watching this game full of Wings penalties & trying to study for my History of Roman Sport midterm tomorrow. I need a drink.

Posted by Christy  on  10/18  at  11:36 PM

Ozzie looks good: Fil just won a few faceoffs: we look better....goooo Downey!!

Posted by srt  on  10/18  at  11:39 PM

“History of Roman Sport”?  I took the wrong classes.

Posted by Clark  on  10/18  at  11:39 PM

yea baby....eat it...eat it and like it

Posted by srt  on  10/18  at  11:41 PM

Well if you’re gonna screw the pooch the least you can do is score a freaking goal!!  Nice job Kronner.

Posted by Dave  on  10/18  at  11:42 PM

5 hole city, baby!

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/18  at  11:42 PM

Kronwall redeems himself for his 1st period penalty / goal.
Nice.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/18  at  11:42 PM

Oh, I won’t argue with you there, Clark.

It’s just so strange that they haven’t won a Cup yet.  Every year they are there, and their key guys are young, but they just seem to be a perennial qualifier for the playoffs so far.  They always get picked to win the conference or the Cup, but haven’t managed to put a run together yet.  The team has all the pieces, but something always seems to be missing--and I don’t think it’s Jeremy Roenick.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:43 PM

I won’t disagree that they always seem poised to take the next step, but I’m also not complaining that they don’t.  I know so many Sharks fans that feel like they get no respect.  Win something and you’ll get respect.  And if you can’t win after having McLaren and Thornton handed to you, quit you’re whining.

Posted by Clark  on  10/18  at  11:46 PM

Hanks the man!!!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/18  at  11:50 PM

Wow, the Zetterborg machine is unstoppable.

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/18  at  11:50 PM

Z!

Posted by Dave  on  10/18  at  11:50 PM

One of the operators at work and I were just discussing Zetterberg today.

We were marveling that every time he’s on the ice, he looks like the best player out there.

Nice goal.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:51 PM

Is San Jose California wine country?  smile

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:54 PM

I think Homer should be awarded an assist whenever there anyone scores and he’s in front of the net.

Posted by srt  on  10/18  at  11:54 PM

Hope you are all enjoying the game.
Just a note, we are removing the secondary comment button so the only one that will be available is below the “posted by”, or in this instance YwoCPO name.
Continue on… I smell a Flip goal coming…

Posted by Paul from Motown Area  on  10/18  at  11:57 PM

You think the Sharks bring out playoff Lilja?

He’s been noticeable in a good way so far.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/18  at  11:57 PM

Z and Datsyuk are just incredible, especially considering where they were drafted.  And Homer gets short shrift but he compliments them perfectly.  His screen was key on that goal.

4 on 4 hockey, y’all!

Posted by Dave  on  10/18  at  11:57 PM

Maltby got hit with a stick on the back of the neck; weird. Lilja redeems (slightly) by jumping in for his mates…

Do we have voodoo over this team?

Posted by srt  on  10/19  at  12:00 AM

Someone poke IWO, he hasn’t updated since Kronner’s goal.

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:01 AM

Do we have voodoo over this team?

Do all 4 lines have 30+ goals? smile

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/19  at  12:01 AM

My picture looks like they are using celfone cameras.  Is FSD dumbing down a HD feed?

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/19  at  12:03 AM

how many chances do you want to give them?

Posted by srt  on  10/19  at  12:05 AM

Hmm.

Rafalski hasn’t impressed the hell outta me, especially since he’s supposed to be better defensively than Schneids.

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/19  at  12:05 AM

Bad turnover eventually ends up in Detroit’s net.

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:05 AM

Clark- Trust me, the class is not as advertised. After a month and a half of classes, we’re finally getting to the sport part. Barely. And it’s ancient Greek sport. My test has pretty much no material on sport- all Roman slavery, family, history, religion, etc. It sucks.

Posted by Christy  on  10/19  at  12:10 AM

I don’t think the Wings have voodoo on the Sharks.  They tend to be really good games.

Detroit on the PP, get the lead back!

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:10 AM

5 on 3, get a goal here!

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:12 AM

Dang, really should have gotten a goal there.

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:14 AM

My picture looks fine.

Maybe you just need a new TV?

At least the power play carries over for 45 seconds with fresh ice.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/19  at  12:14 AM

voodoo just because of the posts...passing comment.

Larry Murphy is getting better as a color commentator: he just explained that if Lids and Rafalski are on their “correct” sides then the play is to go down low; if they switch then they’re looking for a point shot.

Posted by srt  on  10/19  at  12:17 AM

TV is new, picture fine on other channels, maybe a comcast conspiracy.

Posted by HockeyTownTodd  on  10/19  at  12:25 AM

Downey does a good job doing what he’s supposed to do.

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:39 AM

woohoo

Posted by srt  on  10/19  at  12:39 AM

Tear-away jerseys?

Reebok obviously put a lot of qwality work into that.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/19  at  12:40 AM

wow.

Highlight goal, not too shabby for his first!

Posted by TeamDub  on  10/19  at  12:45 AM

There’s some secondary scoring! Ellis… wow.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/19  at  12:45 AM

4th line!

Downey with the fight and Ellis with the goal!

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:45 AM

Congrats to Matt Ellis!

And it wasn’t even a particularly ugly one.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/19  at  12:45 AM

Only got the radio, but Eliis seems to be working right into the lineup.

Posted by soft watch from ontario plates  on  10/19  at  12:47 AM

He’s workin hard tonight, no doubt.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/19  at  12:47 AM

Nice, no way that should have gone in but no complaints from me.  Sharks are getting frustrated, Wings seem pretty calm.

Posted by Clark  on  10/19  at  12:48 AM

At the start of this last scrum, wouldn’t that be considered a late hit?

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/19  at  12:49 AM

“Tough, gritty” teams like Anaheim and San Jose don’t get called for late hits.

Posted by Clark  on  10/19  at  12:51 AM

That’s what I thought.

I was just curious.

Boy oh boy… the fish are losin it!

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/19  at  12:53 AM

Looks like IWO went to sleep again.

I’d love to see Hudler score going against Thornton, just because the size difference would look so funny.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/19  at  12:53 AM

Dats… beautiful.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/19  at  12:54 AM

Nice-looking 5-on-3 there, eh? The Sharks are looking a bit frustrated.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids  on  10/19  at  12:55 AM

Z to Dats!  Rafi with his third assist.

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  12:55 AM

I was resting.  Not asleep. Resting.

Checking your eyelids for light leaks, eh?

It’ll be nice when the team plays a couple times zones closer to home.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/19  at  01:05 AM

For those without the FSN Detroit feed: Ken Daniels is speculating that Rafalski is hurt since he hasn’t had a shift in a few minutes. Lidstrom has played with both Chelios and Lebda while Rafalski’s been on the bench. Larry Murphy said he looked sore.

Posted by Matt Saler from Grand Rapids  on  10/19  at  01:12 AM

Nice elbow by Cheli.

Good game guys.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  10/19  at  01:15 AM

Player of the game: Matt Ellis, for his first career goal being the game-winner.

Good game.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/19  at  01:18 AM

Matt,

Thanks for the update.  TOI shows his last shift as 13:32.  Detroit really cannot afford to lose him from the lineup so hopefully it isn’t anything serious.

Posted by Dave  on  10/19  at  01:19 AM

Rafalski stayed on the bench, though, instead of going into the dressing room.  Maybe that means it isn’t serious and they’re just being careful.

Posted by Baroque from Michigan  on  10/19  at  01:22 AM

I am a major loser, I settled down to watch the game and made it through the first period (just awful for the Wings) and part of the second and then woke up in the 3rd with the score being 4-2.  Sigh.  I don’t even have the timezone excuse, I was only one hour ahead of the game.  I had full intentions of participating in the live blog.  Bummer. :(

Posted by hockeychic from Denver, CO  on  10/19  at  12:45 PM

Sometimes you have to resort to drastic measures and hit the Halloween candy early.  A sugar buzz on Smarties can help you stay awake sometimes!  smile
