Yzerman: “What The Faux Was THAT?”

Darren McCarty officially called it quits today, even though we’d heard he retired several weeks ago.  Craig Custance remains the best hockey writer in Detroit.

Sporting News

“I was going to dump it in, it was the end of the shift but [the puck] rolled on me. My reaction was to toe drag and the next thing I knew I had a step on Niinimaa. I was just trying to shield the puck and saw Hextall coming out ... the last thing I remember, I got the puck on my stick and I remember thinking ‘Don’t miss the net.’”

As classic as that goal was, the reaction from Steve Yzerman might have been better.

“We were celebrating and the first guy I see is Stevie Yzerman in the pile. His eyes were as big as saucers and he said ‘What the [expletive] was that? I had no idea.”

NHLPA’s official release on Mac’s retirement is here.

And this will blow your mind…

I know Avs fans here will hate to read this, but McCarty was/is a tremendous person who has overcome a lot in his life and probably will continue to face tough personal challenges in his new life. He’s had some very public personal setbacks, and they’re always waiting to re-appear in a person’s life if given the chance.

And let’s face facts here: if McCarty had been an Av, you all would have loved him. He stuck up for his teammates, played hard and was good to the fans.

Classy stuff from Dater, of all people.  And he’s asking for reaction from Dive fans. That should be interesting..

DMac will be sorely missed.  There are some great memories, and thank God for Youtube and the ability to relive them.  Fight Night at the Joe, and the OT winner, my fave.

I’m glad he made good on the opportunity given him to return to HockeyTown and contribute at the end of his career.
Once a Wing, always a Wing.

Thanks D-Mac.

I love DMac.  If I ever get VS again, I look forward to seeing his commentary, regardless of how horrible it may be.  I watch Fight Night at the Joe on a semi regular basis.  I wish I had been there to see it live.

That Dater quote is indeed mind blowing but so true.

Back in the day—late 90s, early 00s—McCarty was probably my favorite Wing, next to number 19. The attitude he had on the ice was so much fun to watch, and Stanley Cup teams need guys like him almost as much as they need top-notch scorers or workhorse defensemen. That he was able to make any kind of a comeback last season is remarkable—that kind of determination showed how much being a Wing mattered to him. He’ll be missed.

Franzen hopes to be back on the ice in January and go on their own. But coach
Bengt-Ake Gustafsson’s most recent reports from the U.S. current Johan Franzén is bleak.
It sounds like the OS is out.
- There are those who think he does not play until next year (season), “said Bengt-Ake Gustafsson.
- Medically speaking, they say that he is in the best case is returned to the Stanley Cup finals.

was it McCarty or Kocur who did the rock/paper/scissors to decide with an opposing player who got to leave the ice last after the pre-game skate?  they both had the same superstition and I thought that was a great moment.

I do have a funny story about this. It was when Lepuke was playing for the Coyotes. I was at movie and saw Lepuke and Jeremy Roenick waiting in line for popcorn. I was just going to punch Lepuke in the face but my friend wouldn’t let me so I walked up to them and said, “Are you two enjoying your date?” and then walked away. My friend said they had a look on their faces like a cross between, “I can’t believe he just said that” and “I can’t beileve he can tell we g@y for each other”. It was classic.

Dater shouldn’t get too many bonus points for recognizing the blatant truth.  Mac was the kind of player that any fan would love to have on their team - Detroit, Colorado, Anaheim, New York, Toronto, Columbus, wherever.  There are a few players around the league that are like that.

I’m glad he was able to make a bit of a comeback.  It meant he could leave the game the way he wanted, and with his last memories good ones.  Leaving everything on the ice.

I wish him nothing but the best in his post-playing career (and I hope he never forgets, when he struggles with his demons, that more people are pulling for him than he could possibly realize).

My favorite moment had very little to do with the Red Wings.  Darren has always been my wife’s Favorite Wing so I was happy to be able to take her to a couple Grinder concerts.  It happened the second time my wife and I went to see Grinder in Bay City.  While waiting for the auditorium to open we sat in the bar next door.  Darren walked in and walked right past my wife.  A few other people jumped up and asked him for his autograph.  My wife was the only person who had a sharpie with her (just in case) and she quickly handed it over for Darren to sign things.  For about 20 minutes he was signing posters and pucks and hats (my wife’s being the only one that mattered) and jerseys and pictures and cards.  Ever the gentleman, when he was done, he walked up to my wife, handed her sharpie back and thanked her for loaning it to him.

Darren is a genuine decent person.  I never watched any game, live or on tv that didn’t include darren tossing pucks to the kids.

We missed him greatly when he went to Calgary and will continue to miss him now.

I know you hate to do it Chief, but linking to Dater since his pissy little blow up seems like a bad idea.  I know that with Denver being a bustling metropolis of hockey coverage and Adrianne being the only beat writer in town makes it difficult to get away from Captain Pisspants but I’ve filed him away in the same folder with Dwayne as far as how much I pay attention to him.  He’s a whiner, a cry baby and a fauxing diva and not worth my attention at least.  I’m sure that him saying nice things about McCarty is his way of sucking up to the likes of us and make sure that every clicks away at his link.

Don’t know why I felt like spouting off on that here but I felt it and ran with it (that’s what she said).
