About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

Does confusion make you sad? When you read words like “enigma” and phrases like “Thanks Gary. Ass”, do you wonder why mean people speak in languages you don’t understand? Fret no longer friend! The A2Y Glossary will bring you great joy and enlightenment.

How Others View The A2Y 19
“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time
“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey
“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats
“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom
“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp
“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players? I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont

Chemistry
by IwoCPO on 03/08/08 at 10:26 AMComments (16)
Here’s what I know about chemistry. In tenth grade I failed it, and I mean miserably. The innocent young maiden sitting next to me tried to help by drawing the entire periodic table on her thigh then letting me look at it during tests (and only during tests you sick bastards), but even that didn’t work. I applaud her efforts though. Sweet girl. Grew up on a farm, then moved to the big city to try to get into acting, only to find talent alone...nevermind.

Train Delay
by IwoCPO on 03/06/08 at 08:04 AMComments (30)
I didn’t see the hit on Kopecky, and I didn’t see Downey’s antics, and I didn’t see Rafalski’s body slam of a guy who outweighs him by thirty pounds. No, I wasn’t passed out. Damn you all for thinking that.

“That Is One Crazy Motherf…”
by IwoCPO on 12/08/07 at 08:55 AMComments (8)
Updated 1051 EST: Just for fun, read through the list of comments at Russo’s Rant’s blog from last night. Amazing how the tone changed over the course of three hours. Includes a good comment from Matt Saler from OtW.
--------
I put that in quotes because I guarantee those were the exact words shouted, whispered in awe or uttered from father to son accompanied by a hearty back slap last night at 2153 EST.
And it’s true. With a shutout just moments away and the memory of watching Chris Osgood start seven consecutive games still very fresh in his cluttered mind, our Czech Miracle of Insanity returned to his sociopathic self and gave us a wakeup call. I’m almost shocked he didn’t point at the cameras after his takedown of Gaborik and say…

Secret Behind Drake’s Return: Shreddies
by IwoCPO on 12/06/07 at 09:31 AMComments (22)
Bob Duff has broken a big one, that single story every reporter waits for.
“I’m a big Shreddies guy.”
The move back to Detroit, the team that originally drafted Drake back in 1989, put him within eyesight of the Canadian border and in close proximity to Shreddies.
“It just became a lot easier to get them,” Drake said, joking he’d had a Shreddies clause written into his pact. “That was the only contract bonus I got.”
The rest of the story mentions a few other (former) Wings and the items they’d have imported from home. I don’t know if Duff had a straight face when he wrote this about Bob Probert.
Probert, who spent his entire 17-season NHL career in the United States playing for the Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks, was another player who delighted in care packages of Canadian products.
Yeah...we know.
Schedules and stuff
by IwoCPO on 12/01/07 at 01:32 PMComments (12)
...we could always talk Army/Navy? Nah. First half’s almost done and this game’s over. Scratch that idea. We could talk Les Miles to Michigan, as Kirk Herbstreit reported on ESPN this morning? Nope. Miles has a presser at 1:45 to announce he’s staying at LSU. One note on that: Michigan screwed themselves by opening their elitist idiot traps. If they’d stayed quiet, Miles would be theirs...after today’s game. Idiots.
Ok. The new schedule. The schedule we all wanted? Yeah. Getting closer to it anyway.

One Liners: Minor, Major, Does It Matter?
by IwoCPO on 10/15/07 at 06:30 AMComments (24)
Kris Draper’s a frigging rebel. On a night when the boxscore could have made an emphatic statement, he had to go and throw a shorty in there. If not for his unassisted goal in the second the entire scoresheet would have been dominated by the to this point unnamed Zetterberg, Homer and Datsyuk line.

Game 1 Impressions
by IwoCPO on 10/04/07 at 05:50 AMComments (17)
You can see the post below for the whining, now for the good stuff.
Jiri Hudler needed that. He needed to start with a jolt of confidence and it would appear that Uncle Mike has proven his genius once again by putting the kid in a prime spot to win the game. He set him up for success and that’s good to see.
Does the home team have a choice of shooting first or last during the shootout? Because I’d, you know, kinda rather shoot last.

And We All Stayed Home
by IwoCPO on 10/04/07 at 03:19 AMComments (23)
It won’t be just a local story this time. Nope. The Wing win last night, as fun as it was to see, will be secondary to the echo chamber they played in. As Mike Emrich and Ed Olczyk did their pre-game deal on camera, the results of Red Wing apathy jumped out at us on Versus. A thousand empty seats just minutes before faceoff.
So prepare yourselves because that’s going to be the story today. When Detroit can’t fill the Joe on opening night against a team that barely beat us in the conference final...well, just stand by.
The Class of ‘89
by IwoCPO on 09/22/07 at 04:04 PMComments (24)
Just saw an ad for some sort of cheesy melt thing now offered at a big-named Mexican food franchise. The slow-mo imagery of cheddar cheese inspired me to post instead of continue to flip between MSU/Domers and UM/Penn State.
Larry Wigge’s written a nifty little diddy on Dallas Drake and mentions the Wing draft class of ‘89: an amazing effort. Lidstrom, Konstantinov, Fedorov, Bob Boughner, Mike Sillinger and Drake. Think about that: if not for Konstantinov’s misfortune in June of 2007, you’d probably be looking at three hall of famers drafted by one team in one year.
Plenty of good quotes in Wigge’s story from former teammates and opponents. Makes me wish we’d picked him up three years ago when I started whining about it.
”Players often ask you if you caught the license plate on that truck after you get plastered into the boards,” Foote said. “When you play against Dallas Drake, you have that license plate memorized. You expect to be pounded by him. Not a more fierce and honest competitor in the game.’’
This guy’s going to win some fans in Detroit..quickly.
Saturday With The Deep Diggers
by IwoCPO on 09/15/07 at 09:26 AMComments (6)
There is, apparently, no valid reason to use the word “if” when referring to Dallas Drake’s chances of making the team. Naturally, intelligent readers like yourselves knew that the minute he signed.
Your boy Khan(!), already with a contract in hand to write Drake’s memoirs, has found himself a new BFF.
Drake’s experience as the captain in St. Louis will help. Babcock loves his competitiveness.
“Dallas Drake flat-out loves hockey,’’ Babcock said. “And playing for us, he’ll be re-energized and be a huge part of our team, from a leadership standpoint, from a physical standpoint and from just being an all-around good guy.’’
First Scrimmage A Good One For Drake
by IwoCPO on 09/14/07 at 01:17 PMComments (2)
The anti-Digger is back in rare form. Minutes after the first scrimmage of camp, Bruce MacLeod has an update.
Dallas Drake had a good first day on the job, scoring a goal and assisting on two other in Team C’s 3-1 win over Team B in a scrimmage, Friday. The Red Wings are starting training camp with their projected regular-season lines intact, meaning that Drake skating on left win with Tomas Kopecky at center and Kirk Maltby on the right side.
Sunday Odds and Ends

It’s been nearly two years since we came up with the blog title, “Abel to Yzerman.” For most of you, the significance of that has been pretty clear. “Abel” refers to Wing legend Sid Abel. “Yzerman” is our tribute to a little-known role player who somehow eeked his way onto the Detroit roster for 23 consecutive seasons.
Why do I bring that up?

Khan(!) Sighting
by IwoCPO on 09/07/07 at 06:17 AMComments (7)
Just when you think life without hockey had become all too comfortable for Deep Digger Captain Ansar Khan(!), he staggers in from nowhere to fill our heads with brilliance. Apparently convinced the in-depth scouting reports he wrote two days after the Anaheim series aren’t quite enough to merit a consistent paycheck, MLive’s Wing beat writer is back with a vengeance.
His blog from last night is rife with nuggets of insight like this: “It’s really different,’’ Rafalski said Thursday and this:""I got to start practicing face-offs,’’ Kopecky said; and finally, this: “It was unfortunate,’’ Drake said.
