About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome:

Wanna Feel Smart?

Does confusion make you sad?  When you read words like “enigma” and phrases like “Thanks Gary. Ass”, do you wonder why mean people speak in languages you don’t understand?  Fret no longer friend!  The A2Y Glossary will bring you great joy and enlightenment.

How Others View The A2Y 19

“Hell, I guarantee the content co-opters at Abel to Yzerman were about to link this article under the heading “Bitter Blues Fans” again right up until they just read that last half-sentance. Thanks but no thanks, you Kukla hangers-on.”
--St. Louis Game Time

“I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”
--Mile High Hockey

“I hate them because they are better than us. Of all the frigging teams…”
--In The Cheap Seats

“It’s just a shame that the most classless, uneducated, lowbrow fanbase in the league gets this sweep. Red Wing fans don’t deserve their team.”
--Thhom

“I really don’t care what fans or bloggers think.”
--Drew Sharp

“Why is it you Detroit fans are still so classless when you have such a classy hockey team, with such a professional GM and gentlemen players?  I understand that the author of this blog is a manner-less cad, but the rest of you should be better.”
--A2Y Fan, Jeff Beaumont

Late To The Party: Hank Named TSN Player Of The Year

by IwoCPO on 06/13/08 at 06:40 PM
Comments (5)

I’m late, not Hank.  I’m sure you’ve all read this over on the varsity page (like Malik, AlanaH is a posting machine), but somebody seems to think Zetterberg’s pretty good.

The inaugural TSN NHL Player of the Year featured a showdown between playoff co-scoring leader and MVP, Zetterberg, and regular season scoring leader and MVP, Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.  Zetterberg prevailed with 97 points including 13 first-place votes, while Ovechkin was runner up with 81 points and 12 first-place nods.  Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom finished third with 38 points including three first-place votes.

More from TSN.

Some dude named Jean working for the Calgary Herald asked Matt at Battle of Alberta for his take on a 1998 NHL draft do-over.

1998, you’ll recall, was the year Pavel Datsyuk was drafted in the 6th round, 171st overall.

According to Matt, things might be a tad different today.

“That Is One Crazy Motherf…”

Updated 1051 EST: Just for fun, read through the list of comments at Russo’s Rant’s blog from last night.  Amazing how the tone changed over the course of three hours.  Includes a good comment from Matt Saler from OtW.

--------

I put that in quotes because I guarantee those were the exact words shouted, whispered in awe or uttered from father to son accompanied by a hearty back slap last night at 2153 EST.

And it’s true.  With a shutout just moments away and the memory of watching Chris Osgood start seven consecutive games still very fresh in his cluttered mind, our Czech Miracle of Insanity returned to his sociopathic self and gave us a wakeup call.  I’m almost shocked he didn’t point at the cameras after his takedown of Gaborik and say…

Schedules and stuff

...we could always talk Army/Navy?  Nah.  First half’s almost done and this game’s over.  Scratch that idea.  We could talk Les Miles to Michigan, as Kirk Herbstreit reported on ESPN this morning?  Nope.  Miles has a presser at 1:45 to announce he’s staying at LSU.  One note on that: Michigan screwed themselves by opening their elitist idiot traps.  If they’d stayed quiet, Miles would be theirs...after today’s game.  Idiots.

Ok. The new schedule. The schedule we all wanted?  Yeah. Getting closer to it anyway.

Mirtle On The Selke

James Mirtle has some telling stats regarding Selke candidates.  Naturally, I wouldn’t be mentioning it if Zetterberg wasn’t rightfully at the top of his statistical breakdown.  I would like to, however, point out this from a reader in the comment section.

Even if Brind’Amour is not yet a Selke Trophy candidate, I would rather have him on my team than every player on this list. Yes, I am including Zetterberg.

I’m sure you all agree with that.

First a few congratulations are in order.  Gramps is back.  Grampa Pinhead, who has served as the A2Y logic czar since our inception a few years ago, has brought back his own blog: HockeytownTodd.  If you’re familiar with Gramps’ comments at our site, you know he’s traditional, cranky and caustic.  Great reading and always a source for stats you won’t find anywhere else.

Secondly, Behind The Jersey has been selected hockey’s tenth best blog by Sports Business Daily.  Visit BTJ to see which other hockey bloggers made the cut.  I’ll let you know when Cracked comes out with their rankings. I’m sure I’ll be in there somewhere.

Oh, and back to Gramps for a second…

No Matter What, Grigorenko Staying Stateside…I Think

Gotta give your boy George Malik credit.  When Wing news hits those pulsing Russian news wires, he’s on it like....(insert Bubba line here.  I’ve exhausted all mine.)

Today?  Igor Grigorenko tells some Russian writer for some Russian paper that he’s done with the mother country come Detroit or Grand Rapids.

Update: 1243 ESTBruce MacLeod reports Uncle Mike says Cleary’s ribs aren’t broken and that “he’s day to day”.  Mike Babcock is a lying liar so take that for what you will.

Mid-September in the Navy and all initiated Chiefs are busy yesterday and today.  And that’s all I’m gonna say about that.  Beers and anchors will get you more info.

An exhibition loss...no big deal.  Another two more injuries (at least)? Now that’s irritating.

Hail To The BJ

Previews of the Division That Gary Built return today with a look at our once and future rivals, the Columbus Blue Jackets.  I’m no expert on the BJ’s. In fact I wasn’t even aware of their existence until late in life.  But now that I’ve found them, I recognize their value.  I’m sure you do as well.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it now...the better the BJ’s, the better off we all are.  We, as a fan base, can only benefit from their improvement, especially if Gary Bettman plans on giving the BJ’s to us 8 times per year.

What…and you expected me to somehow mature or something?  Please.

There is, apparently, no valid reason to use the word “if” when referring to Dallas Drake’s chances of making the team.  Naturally, intelligent readers like yourselves knew that the minute he signed.

Your boy Khan(!), already with a contract in hand to write Drake’s memoirs, has found himself a new BFF.

Drake’s experience as the captain in St. Louis will help. Babcock loves his competitiveness.

“Dallas Drake flat-out loves hockey,’’ Babcock said. “And playing for us, he’ll be re-energized and be a huge part of our team, from a leadership standpoint, from a physical standpoint and from just being an all-around good guy.’’

Khan(!): Uncle Mike Views Sopel As Top 4 Guy

by IwoCPO on 09/12/07 at 03:12 PM
Comments (7)

Ansar Khan(!) was handing out balloons as the Wings boarded busses for the trip to TC today.  He found a few minutes to throw a few questions at his primary antagonist, Mike Babcock.  One subject was potential diamond in the rough Brent Sopel.

On veteran defenseman Brent Sopel, in camp on a tryout: “I think he has a chance to be a real good fit for us. He can shoot the puck, he can skate with the puck. He’s got to take (away) some of the erratic play he’s had. (Wings assistant coach) Todd McClellan coached him juniors, I’ve known him since he was a kid, we have a real good feel for him and think he’s a top-four NHL defenseman. Now, just because we think it doesn’t mean anything, he’s got to relax and let his skill come to the forefront and show us what he brings (though the preseason).’’

Stealing From My Friends

I’ve decided I don’t like the term “blogosphere” anymore.  Kind of like “Michigander” or “diet”.  Not real fond of those two either.  So, this will be the last time you see it at A2Y.  Henceforth and thusly, any time I present to you a conglomeration of views in one sloppy post I will title it “Stealing From My Friends”.

I sense that you are apprehensive.  Apprehensive like a transvestite Dive fan caught in Raleigh at 0130 on a Tuesday?  No, but understandably wary.  Me too.  Here we go.

“Big” Day For Scotty.  Bad Day For Grigorenko.

Driving home yesterday I came to a startling conclusion.  When I put my mind to it, and the conditions are perfect, I sound exactly like Ozzy in “Crazy Train.” Not every time, oh no.  But I figured I’ve heard that song close to 700 times over the “history of my life” (Rocky II was on Versus!!!! last night) and I’ll bet yesterday and a late night in Hong Kong in ‘94 were the only times I really nailed it.

Oh, and Scott Bowman’s happy with the Wings.  Unless…

Previewing The Division That Gary Built:  Third Man In and The Hawks

Dave at Gorilla Crouch is an ambitious dude.  About a month ago he started sending out emails that sounded all official, suggesting Central Division bloggers join forces for one big, fat look at the Division Gary Gave Us.  He laid out a schedule, wrote us some promotional verbiage and set the stage for a three-week bonanza.

Today, Chris at Third Man In starts us off with a look at the team that Wirtz Tried To Destroy.  Things are looking up in Chicago.  And why wouldn’t they with The Enigma on board?

Mirtle: Wings Will Win 75 Games

by IwoCPO on 09/10/07 at 11:01 AM
Comments (7)

Oh alright. No, he didn’t actually say that.  But James Mirtle, writing for AOL’s Fan House, agrees with all other smart people in saying it would take some sort of wacked-out science fiction scenario to keep the Central crown out of Hockeytown.

Detroit may remain an old team by NHL standards, but that’s not going to stop them from winning a seventh consecutive Central Division title. Given the league’s ridiculously unbalanced schedule, one that will see the Red Wings face Chicago/Columbus/Nashville/St. Louis 32 times this season, it’s going to be relatively easy pickings as long as Hasek remains healthy.

Patience Hard To Come By For Kindl

by IwoCPO on 09/09/07 at 09:40 PM
Comments (1)

Great stuff from Bruce MacLeod tonite on Wing prospective blue liner, Jakub Kindl.

“About a week before we did send him to juniors, we said that we were going to send him out,” said Detroit assistant general manager Jim Nill. “Then we played him a (preseason) game and he played very well. We said that we’d give him one more and then let him go back to juniors and he played better. He wound up playing about five games.”

With seven NHL-experienced defenseman on the team at training camp last fall, there was little chance that Kindl would wind up in Detroit.

Different circumstances will keep Kindl down in GR this year, or at least prompt the Wings to start him there.  A stacked blue line, plus zero flexibility with Derek Meech spell a season with the Griffs for the young Czech.

More from MacLeod.

Not ALL Southern Teams, Just One

Here’s the great thing about blogging.  One guy (the emperor) points to an article about the Wings offering some 9 buck tickets, then a few other guys scoff or applaud the move.  Then a reader who happens to be a fellow blogger drops a few bombs in the comment section until she’s formed her argument to the extent she’s ready to post it on her own site.  At that point, I read it, agree or disagree, and point you right back to both, throwing in my own elitist views for good measure.

And away we go.
