The Hybrid Proposal

It’s not every day that you can find something worthy of stealing promoting, from the Canucks.com messages boards, but yesterday provided a pleasant surprise.

Given the level of secrecy dedicated to the protection of the new team logo, there’s certainly no definitive way left anymore to surmise the real image from all the misleading clues. So one board member—Pfizer—decided to believe every possibility and created the ultimate: a Canucks Logo Hybrid.

I’m sure plenty of you have already seen it, but for those who haven’t (that is, those smart enough to avoid those message boards like the plague), here is Pfizer’s creation:

Linden Inked

The endless quests to be the first lunatic to “break” the story that Trevor Linden will be signing with the New York Islanders (or whereverthehell I heard earlier) at any moment, can finally be stopped. Captain Canuck will stay a Canuck (sans “Captain” of course) for another season.  From Canucks.com (via Kukla’s):

“Call off the investigations and put away your detective hats.  After almost four months of questions and predictions, Trevor Linden re-signs and will return in a Canucks uniform for the 2007-08 season.  Linden’s excited to re-join his team of 15 years (going into his 16th) and is positive about the changes made over the summer.”

No idea what he was signed for myself, though TSN should have it available soon. ($700,000 is my guess…)
(Update:...and apparently I would be wrong. Linden’s contract is for another $600K season, but with the stipulation, that the “deal also includes an additional $350,000 in bonuses for games played.”  Not quite sure I know what that means…)

Now, onto the new uniforms, plus the elusive scoring plans for this coming season. It would be nice to clear up all the team mysteries soon.

Hockey Slave to Technology

There are plenty of things to talk about in Vancouver, but I think most of them are getting us nowhere. While interesting, they all seem to come down to “hurry up and wait.”  For instance:

- Trevor Linden is out; Trevor Linden is in; Trevor Linden is baggage??? (Geezus, Tom…)
- The Canucks still need scoring.  (I quite enjoyed some of the stuff added in the comments here. Well done.)
- Peter Forsberg wants to be a Canuck. But he won’t be.
- The new jerseys are ready to hit the streets. But you still have to wait. (F*#&@!)
...etc

So instead, let me point out a real-world mess from last week that botched up my hockey life (and apparently interfered with the lives of millions of other people… although that would be their problem) and made me think about how dependent hockey fans are on technology:  the crash and burn of Skype.  As it’s always easiest, let me first start by blaming Bill Gates:

Trevor Linden Watch

Earlier today I was starting to give into despair. But no longer as Jim Jamieson at the Vancouver Province provides reason to hope:

It appears that Trevor Linden will return for another season with the Vancouver Canucks.

Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault told The Province Thursday that a meeting between himself and the 37-year-old winger “went really, really well” and indicated that it is now up to general manager Dave Nonis to make the final decision and get Linden’s signature on a contract.

Maybe we’ll hear more later. I’m going to bask in hope for a while now.

Naslund, Forsberg, Ohlund and Rumor Assessment

CKNW radio in Vancouver interviewed Canucks captain Markus Naslund earlier today with some interesting revelations:

Naslund’s skating buddies are a who’s who of Swedish hockey.
“The (Sedin) Twins are skating here, Peter Forsberg, and with the local MODO team where there are many ex-NHLers, plus there are players who have signed who are getting ready to go over there (NHL) too,” Naslund said.
When asked if he was trying to coax Forsberg, an unrestricted free agent, to join him in Vancouver this year Naslund chuckled.
“I’m doing what I can. I’m sure there’s lots of interest in him and we’ll see where he ends up. I think his main focus now is getting healthy with his foot, then he’ll make a decision.”

While it’s not a surprise that Naslund would be dropping subtle suggestions in his best friend’s ear, some people are taking the idea quite seriously, including TSN’s staff writers, with this comment: “The Vancouver Canucks have apparently jumped into the Peter Forsberg sweepstakes, and they hope that a childhood friend may influence “Foppa’s” decision.”

The “sweepstakes”? Geez, how many teams has Foppa been rumored to be heading towards in the last 6 weeks?  Still, it’s an interesting thought.

And speaking of rumors, I nearly threw up my lunch reading this when it was forwarded to my email box a little while ago.

Tales of Trevor

There’s been a lot of Trevor Linden speculation going on, and I haven’t had much to add till now.  I’d hoped we’d hear some news today that cleared things up, but it’s just more of the same (here and here).

But Iain MacIntyre’s original report broke open the topic in a big way in yesterday’s Vancouver Sun.

For months we’ve all been left wondering about Linden’s fate. With no news to speak of as he cycled the world, we’ve been sitting and waiting. That is, we were until yesterday when MacIntyre documented the first explicit confirmation (that I can recall) that Linden does indeed wish to play hockey again this coming season:

Catching Up With the Canucks

Despite the lack of hockey action in Canucks land (and from me lately) there still seems to be a lot of buzz going on around this team.  Nothing all that serious, but each requiring a short rant or a few smart (or not so smart) remarks.

As usual, I claim no responsibility for accuracy while discussing today’s topics.

1. John McCaw in handcuffs. (not really)
2. Brian Burke still entertains. (me, if no one else)
3. We don’t care what the new team logo is anymore. (just SHOW us and be done with it)

Good News to Wake Up To

First, Canucks training camp starts on September 7th (going to the 16th, it appears) in Victoria. Great news when you live on this island, seldom able to catch the guys in person.

Today’s other piece of news is even better—though liable to cost me every dime I have.  Shaw Cable has finally, finally come to some deal with the NHL and will be carrying the Centre Ice package for customers in British Columbia.  I don’t think most fans across Canada and the US realize that most of us in BC have never been able to access that NHL package.

Here are the basic details of this deal that, when the costs are decided, will likely guarantee I live in poverty the rest of my life. (Damn, but I’m happy about it, though…)

Canucks Odds & Ends

Because I’m bored waiting on the damn jerseys and logo, here are a couple under-the-radar stories today.

First, Vancouver finally pulled a HUGE trade. From Canucks.com: “Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have acquired defenceman Zack Fitzgerald from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for centre Francois-Pierre Guenette.”

WHOA!  (snore….)  Anyway, a warm welcome to the new Fitz.

Secondly (and far more entertainingly for my money) Jan Bulis is now ready to say “Show me the money!”... without an agent.  From Jason Botchford:

When I was talking to NHL agent Jiri Crha today (August 1) about the Canucks signing of Jozef Balej, he tossed out a small bit of information that got my attention.
Jan Bulis fired him as his agent.
“I want to tell you one thing, Jan fired me as an agent. He said to me: ‘I want nothing to do with you anymore,’” Crha told me.
Now, Bulis can be rash and stubborn — by his own admission — but this move really surprised me, as well as Crha. I’ve had plenty of open discussions with Bulis and he has long considered Crha a trusted friend as well as his agent. These two were tight for a long time.

Wonder what that’s about.
