Amusing Ourselves at the Expense of the Islanders

Canucks vs Islanders -- 7pm PT
Canucks.com indicates that back-spasmic Alex Edler might actually play tonight. Not much more to add but that (1) the Islanders (or their beat writers) are nervous, and (2) Canucks fans already appear to be intoxicated.
And on that note, Mike the Yankee Canuck will be joining me here to contribute his deep thoughts throughout the game, teaching me everything he knows about hockey, the nation of Canada, the city of Vancouver, and the soulful music of Bryan Adams (it’s his favorite, I’m almost positive).
Join us only if you wish to share complex and thought-provoking “analysis” of Rick DiPietro. (Really, you could tell me almost anything and I wouldn’t have a clue if you were just making it up...)

Well, what I predict and what actually HAPPENS is seldom the same thing. So to avoid jinxing something (or eating my words) I’ll just take the safe route and stick with “It won’t be Garth Snow.”

I almost forgot to mention—just today, the guys from The 2 Man Advantage put up the third installment of their series originally filmed at the NYI training camp last year, hanging with the team.
Includes a brief demonstration about how the Islanders intend to deal with people who mess with their goalie…

A reading from the first book of South Park:
“Now now, the Canadian government has apologized for Bryan Adams on numerous occasions...”
Posted by Mike from New York on 01/08/08 at 11:03 PM ET
Yeah, so what I was mentioning before; Tom Larscheid pretends he’s cold, then they talk about the Candian dollar, then they talk about hawaii, and ask “Why Hawaii, Why Now”. They also did one about some real estate project in Abbotsford.

MIKE,
How would you rate the Snowman’s performance in NY??? I am a bit surprised he’s done pretty well EH (eh for the benefit on the YANK)
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/08/08 at 11:07 PM ET
Who’s this n00b singing the anthem? Where’s Loney?
Posted by sean orr from gastown on 01/08/08 at 11:08 PM ET
If DiPietro gets pulled Alanah has to tattoo the fishsticks Isles logo on her ass. Just throwing that out there. Commit to your craft
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:09 PM ET
Better than the televised brake&muffler;commercials though, right? God, they’d have to be…
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:10 PM ET
Next time he teaches us about Canada, Mike isn’t allowed to use South Park references.
Nice to be playing a team that’s famous for scoring less goals than we are…
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:11 PM ET
Ryan - I’d say Garth has been a lot better then originally thought/mocked. Comrie is having a good year and team has some chemistry. They’re ninth in the conference, ahead of the Sabres and Leafs (snicker). So he could be doing a lot worse IMO.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:12 PM ET
Alanah - you gave me Bryan Adams on the silver platter. You insulted your own country. Tisk tisk…
In hockey news...I SAW PARK (standing oddly at the blueline as everyone skated by him)! We got a game.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:13 PM ET
Just thought I’d drop in to say that, as a Rangers fan, I love the title of this post. And after their 4th straight loss, I need all the amusement I can get.
Posted by K24 from NYC on 01/08/08 at 11:13 PM ET
Flamers losing 2 zip to a surging Coyotes team. What’s up with them?
Looking forward to the game FRIDAY
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/08/08 at 11:18 PM ET
Welcome, K24.
You know, I just had a horrible thought—what if we were to be beaten on a Richard Park GWG?
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:18 PM ET
You know you’re playing the Islanders when Mitchell lobbs bombs and you think “well, sure, maybe that’ll work.”
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:19 PM ET
You’ll be seeing Byron in your sleep on the flight home Ricky
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:22 PM ET
Byron Ritchie have something to prove to the Islanders? Two breakaways are fun… wrong guy to have them, though. Oh well.
As for Phoenix, Ryan, I think they could probably exchange the whole team, keeping Bryzgalov, and the result would be the same. And he’s funny, too… I have a video somewhere about him. Hmm. I’ll find it later.
Shots 10-3 for Vancouver… another nice change.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:23 PM ET
Vancouver is outshooting them 11-3 and the demoted captain scores the opener. Let’s play ten periods shall we?
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:25 PM ET
Dammit. I’ve lost my TV signal.
Naslund scores and I get a cable blackout? Is it THAT unusual??
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:29 PM ET
Jesus, the Islanders are dogging this. You are sleep walking if Pyatt strips you of the puck. Twice. In your own zone.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:30 PM ET
Is the game on FREE TV in NY Islander land??
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/08/08 at 11:30 PM ET
Canucks have 18 shots already...they had 19 in three periods against the Rangers. Woot
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:32 PM ET
4-on-4—Perhaps the NYI will suddenly take over this game...?
Nah.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:36 PM ET
The Isle’s saving grace right now is the Canucks can’t score.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/08/08 at 11:42 PM ET
It’s funny how, when it’s your own team getting clocked this badly, it’s a “terrible game.”
But watching this as a Canucks fan? It’s like the highest form of hockey art. Makes me want to play the Islanders 20 games a season…
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:44 PM ET
In honor of the lone goal scorer (and much maligned) Markus Naslund, I took these two screenshots today from some Swedish language news story on the history of Naslund’s and Forsberg’s hockey careers.
(I thought I’d include Forsberg’s image, too, since it comes from an era prior to my discovery that he was the devil...)
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:49 PM ET
“Angermanland”?
Is that the city they played for, or some weird team name?
Posted by Shabbadoo on 01/08/08 at 11:52 PM ET
I have no idea. The whole production was spoken in Swedish—and quite hilarious for that reason, really.
But yeah, Angermanland. Sounds like somewhere the Flyers might have their practice rink.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/08/08 at 11:54 PM ET
Hey, I’m here too.
The Islanders so don’t care about this road trip to Western Canada, they didn’t bother to send their top play-by-play man Howie Rose on it.
So we’re stuck here in the New York area with Hockey Hall of Famer Jiggs McDonald. Poor us…
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/08/08 at 11:55 PM ET
In an effort to stall an impending, “How can you hate Jiggs?”, I should say that that was sarcasm. Jiggs McDonald is a god in the New York area, and with good reason.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/08/08 at 11:58 PM ET
That pic of Forsberg? Oof...it’s got that “Last night’s over, I’m not buying you breakfast” feel to it.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:03 AM ET
This is also the battle of the two teams with the most awesome Online TV Channels. Cause we all know the Tech dept’s have money on this.
Isles almost got one by Bobby Lou…
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:03 AM ET
Uh oh, the Isles woke up...this is not good for a Canuck team that failed to put them away from what I heard of the first.
Looks like Teddy had some words for the orange and blue in between periods.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:04 AM ET
Geezus… Mike is right. Not being able to score in a game you’re dominating this much is sorta freaky.
It’s just one bounce away from going from euphoric fun, to freakin’ nightmare.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:05 AM ET
Lui’s problem is he’s bored, not that the Isles are coming on that strongly.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:07 AM ET
Not so much “last night is over, I’m not buying you breakfast” as much as “I’m not just at the party… I AM the party, baby.”
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:08 AM ET
Geezus… Islanders tie it? I guess Luongo’s NOT BORED NOW, MIKE.
Bloody hell.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:09 AM ET
Ugh...bored goalie, bored shot, bored calls on the blueline. THIS is why alcohol is good in sporting events.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:10 AM ET
I’d argue that goal is evidence that Luongo was bored! Whatever, it’s a goal, fair enough. Guerin looks as confused as the rest of us...or is that his normal mug?
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:12 AM ET
Indeed. I don’t even know how I watched this sport prior to being the legal age.
That’s why children shouldn’t be exposed to hockey—it’s got nothing to do with violence, but stress that drives them to drink.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:14 AM ET
I just figured out this wasn’t PPV. WTF.
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:16 AM ET
Canucks get their 5th powerplay. A new saying shall be born: “5th time is the charm.”
I just hope they don’t require another 19 shots in the 2nd period to generate their second #$%@! goal this game.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:18 AM ET
PPV, Ryan? I was wondering why the hell you were listening to this game on NHL radio and not watching it on TV…
Funny, though.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:20 AM ET
Holy crap what are those things on Dipietro’s leg’s?
Looks like 1/2 of a nice sectional I used to have.
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:20 AM ET
I’m blaming you Alanah. You lead me astray.
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:25 AM ET
How can I possibly lead anyone astray when I fully, loudly and frequently admit to having no idea where I’m going???!!
Wow, how many open nets can one team miss in a game? Let’s find out, shall we…
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:29 AM ET
Someone tell me that was Ritchie missing that 2-on-1 open net so my tears are legitimate.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:29 AM ET
DiPi standing on his head practically.
Canucks have moved it around real well, but can’t find that big white space in between them red thingys.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:29 AM ET
That move by the Sedin sister was SICK.
COOKE??? what was that????
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:29 AM ET
Ugh that was Cooke? Awesome...so we’re still tied and now I’m a grown man crying.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:31 AM ET
John Garrett on Sportsnet just now during that last scrum: “DO you think Kesler and Dipietro are discussing the New Hampshire Primary?”
Good to have experts on the job.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:37 AM ET
Ugh, I’ve only watched a period, and they’ve played that annoying Christie Brinkley ad for the Isles like 10 times.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:37 AM ET
I gotta say, it IS good to see Nolan back in the big show. Good on Snowy for that.
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:37 AM ET
Actually, Wang hired Teddy and NEIL SMITH on the same day. Snowy came 40 days later.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:39 AM ET
Flamers LOSE woohoo.
Coyotes 5-0 now. What’s up with that?
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:40 AM ET
Haha! Mike Sillinger was just interviewed and asked what he was concerned with going into the 3rd period. He says: “The less time spent in our own end, the better. The Canucks have some fire power up front.”
He’s gotta be kidding. Shot power maybe… but geezus, the Canucks couldn’t hit the side of a barn with a cannon.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:41 AM ET
Really wow. DIdn’t know Wang Chung was still around
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:42 AM ET
Why would he leave? He’s not a criminal like the Isles last 12 owners…
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:49 AM ET
He’s certainly not a criminal, but geez, the dude strikes me as a little crazy.
Although I guess being crazy never stopped anyone from getting involved in the hockey business.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 12:52 AM ET
Didn’t he have a hit in the 80’s?
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 12:53 AM ET
Steve...there are far worse things then seeing Christie Brinkley multiple times. It’s the Isles jersey that is tough on the eyes
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:55 AM ET
Christie’s aged quite a bit...not as badly as her ex-husband…
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:56 AM ET
So, Canuck fans...impressions of DiPi?
He’s definitely lost in the shuffle when you talk about great goalies in this league.
Oh! How about that indeed. A distraction-*#$%@& in front and little used Blake Comeau gets the goal, 2-1 Icelanders.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:57 AM ET
You know, this is like a Rocky movie where the bad guy pummels him for like 40 rounds, gets tired and bored and Rocky pops him a few times as a result and wins.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 12:58 AM ET
Ugh, thanks a lot DiPi, I vouched for you..
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 12:59 AM ET
Rick is certainly fighting the *vaunted* Canucks offense and keeping the Isles in it...until that Daniel shot!
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:00 AM ET
Wow. Daniel Sedin scores and it’s tied 2-2.
Thank God. I hadn’t even come to terms yet with the last Isles goal.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:00 AM ET
Well, now you can pretend it didn’t happen.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:01 AM ET
Impressed with Dipietro. Luongo, tonight? Not so much.
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 01:03 AM ET
I’d say it’s pretty good fortune for the Isles that Luongo has coughed up two Cloutier-esque goals in one game. History must be haunting him a bit.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:03 AM ET
Cloutier used to beatdown on the Icelanders...literally, remember when he beat Salo’s ass a ways back?
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:10 AM ET
Man, a game it was way too easy to be cocky about at the end of the first, and now I’m sitting here biting my nails and developing a twitch.
Stupid Islanders.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:14 AM ET
DiPietro, along with Brodeur and Lundqvist will be profiled in SI, due out tomorrow, according to the NYI telecast.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:16 AM ET
Yeah, I think that fight was when Cloutier may have peaked. Sadly it was in the Rags uni too...that was no good either. Cloutier was probably the best fighter all of the most recent Canuck goalies like Snow, Hedburg and Burke (does he count if it’s not on the ice? snicker...)
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:16 AM ET
Here it is:

that’s <b>almost<B> as good as the Ruutu beat the crap out of Tucker vid. Almost.
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 01:26 AM ET
Christ the Canucks have 42 shots? Nothing about this game makes sense anymore.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:26 AM ET
It’ll be Overtime at The Garage. The Isles have gained a point they have no business having.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:26 AM ET
Isles can pass the Rangers with a win here.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:29 AM ET
Seriously...the Canucks gave away a point they had no right giving away. I sense bad things are afoot in the next few minutes…
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:29 AM ET
My TV signal keeps wanking out. Pretty soon I’m going to smash something.
WIN IT already, Canucks.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:29 AM ET
Due to superior points percentage, at the 43-game mark...the New York Rangers are a last place hockey team.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:32 AM ET
OH SURE NOW THEY ARE CALLING OFF SIDES
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 01:33 AM ET
Someone in an orca sweater just got away with breaking Comrie’s composite in two.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:33 AM ET
Alanah you were right...Richard Park MAY score the winner here! At least I’m armed with booze
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:34 AM ET
There will be a shootout in VanCity. 45-28 shots in favor of Vancouver.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:35 AM ET
This is literally a “crapshoot”, no?
Okay, Pyatt scores for sure (he has to be on the list, right?). Beyond that, I have no freakin’ idea. Cloutier was always pretty good at penalty shots, I recall. Maybe Luongo will continue to play like old Clouts…
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:36 AM ET
Shooters:
Kesler shoots first for Vancouver on DiPietro.
Guerin, Sillinger, Satan for the Isles.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:37 AM ET
I feel like Mike Milbury is somewhere giggling, eating string Twizzlers while talking about these goalies to a female stranger at hotel bar.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:38 AM ET
Pyatt the 2nd shooter for Vancouver...misses the net as well.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:39 AM ET
Traveler Mike Sillinger on Luongo...Glove Grab Bobby Lou.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:40 AM ET
Okay, so much for my Pyatt “scores for sure” theory.
.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:40 AM ET
LINDEN! Damn, he’s great at shootouts!
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:40 AM ET
WHAT A MOVE BY SATAN.
Satan scores and we keep going…
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:41 AM ET
Naslund on Ricky D...he lost control of it.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:41 AM ET
Wish we could just put Linden up repeatedly for shootouts.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:42 AM ET
Luongo the save, Mason Raymond for the Nucks.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:42 AM ET
Nice try but got too far when he made his move...now Blake Comeau can win it…
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:43 AM ET
Hahaha...Lui saves it and dumps the guy. That’s actually the best play in a shootout for this team.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:43 AM ET
Oh man what a save by Bobby Lou on Comeau...simply magnificent...Edler for Vancouver
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:44 AM ET
Wow. This is one hell of a shootout. Nice saves, Luongo.
And Raymond’s move was pretty good, even though it went horribly wrong…
GO EDLER! WHOOOO!
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:44 AM ET
Save Luongo, and Vancouver probably didn’t deserve it after letting the Isles stick till a shootout...but okay.
The Islanders move into 4th place and Top 8 in the East, get a couple days off before Calgary on Friday.
Posted by Steve from New Jersey on 01/09/08 at 01:45 AM ET
Geezus. That game was ridiculous.
Beginning to end, totally idiotic.
Final shots: 45-28.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:45 AM ET
The Isles should be happy they get a point and the Canucks should be beaten with a lead pipe for taking that long to finish it off.
12-0-2 in GM Place in the last 14. Thanks Phoenix, the Canucks jump Calgary back into first.
Posted by Yankee Canuck on 01/09/08 at 01:46 AM ET
Naslund is embarrassing in shootouts. Terrible.
Posted by Ryan from dapuddle on 01/09/08 at 01:46 AM ET
My final thought: “exciting” hockey is waaaaay overrated. That would’ve been much more fun if the Canucks stomped the Islanders into the ground after the first.
Posted by Alanah McGinley from British Columbia on 01/09/08 at 01:49 AM ET
Really, Really, Really, stop whinging.
We win, they lose. Their goalie was hot and ours wasn’t. We got 45 shots, their goalie was very hot. Naslund scored on his new line, Edler is better than OK and Linden continues being the shoot-out god. Be happy. If not, try Serazone. Works for me. Plus wine.
Posted by Michael Lewis from Vancouver on 01/09/08 at 02:25 AM ET
If I hadn’t witnessed that game in person I never would have believed it. It’s like there was a full moon or something. Luckily Lou redeemed his bad goals by coming up big in the shootout. Just odd...I’m still scratching my head this morning after this one.
Posted by Trini from Van City on 01/09/08 at 12:19 PM ET
That must have been a roller coaster of a game to attend in person, Trini. Fun, though.
