Fashionable Hockey

If you’re not going to check out the ASG for the hockey, how about the designer clothes?  From Nedra Rhone’s “Shop Talk” in the AJC:

Even if you’re not a total hockey head, NHL all-star weekend isn’t a complete bust.

Alyssa Milano (seen lately on My Name is Earl) is making an appearance in Atlanta this weekend at Rockin’ Skate 2008 to launch her new clothing line for female hockey fans who are into fashion.

Touch, available in early spring at shop.nhl.com, will include outerwear, denim, dresses and more. Clearly a sports lover, Milano also designed a Major League Baseball line.

I have no doubt there’s a market for it—and that baseball line of hers has certainly worked out well— but I’ll be sticking to my Luongo jersey, thanks.

But for the more chic hockey chick, here’s something for the LA Kings fan:

Maybe I’ll just get the shoes—those would probably look great with the Luongo sweater….at least as long as I don’t fall and break my ass. smile

I like the Stealth better than the Synergy, and I’m saving up for the S17—think of it as an “O-Stick” that actually works.  Those orange Synergy Grips are OK, but that’s a legacy model at this point, and the grip is overrated anyway.

I’m sorry, but I still see Ms. Milano as “Sam” from “Who’s the Boss.”  It’s like the Olsen Twins, except that at least Ms. Milano grew up to be an attractive young lady instead of two anorexic Ethiopian boys.

Put Maria Sharapova in a Red Wings jersey, on the other hand…

Sharapova in a Wings jersey?? Pfftt… you haven’t seen me in the Luongo jersey!

Boring.

Standard borderline-tart-wear with an expensive logo on it, apparently.  Without the logo I can’t see how it’s different than anything in any other overpriced department store.

(And you better not even think about those shoes until your concussion symptoms are gone!  I can feel my ankles aching just looking at them.)

You should have been around a few months ago when there was a discussion of marketing ideas for the NHL - I think Angelina Jolie in fishnets and a jersey came up then along with other similar ideas…  smile

Ohhh…the clothes?  Yeah, you are right…standard ‘tart-wear’...indeed.  My guess is the NHL’s fashion marketing team is in a time warp in the early 00’s…and doesn’t realize we are in ‘08 already.

I still like the stick…

Nothing wrong with tart-wear—my wardrobe could only improve by such measures.  (*though it’ll be a cold day and hell before I’m convinced to prove that theory…) smile

And don’t worry, Baroque… I barely trust myself to even walk in bare feet at the moment. Those shoes would kill me.

**Incidentally, Sherry at Scarlett Ice has posted a bunch of photos of Milano’s fashion initiative with MLB.

Yeah, I’m just not sure that LA Kings top would be appropriate for a cold arena! Under a blazer or a cardigan it’d be cute, but then you can’t see the logo which…kind of defeats the purpose.

No, not so good in a cold arena!

But I don’t think that the goal of logo-covered fashion is to wear it to the arena at all, but everywhere else.  Make a girl into a walking billboard and the NHL gets exposure beyond it’s small surrounding market.

Okay the purse encrusted with hundreds of Swarovski crystals caught my eye - haha good lord!

In that case I want them to pay me.

Although I just hate someone expecting my to spend $50 for a $20 shirt because they did some slipshod embroidery or silkscreening on it.

That’s the thing that drives me nuts!  I’m a fireplug of a guy, so hockey jerseys, um…cater to my figure…but who the hell is going to pay $70 for those pink-and-white, silk-screened monstrosities that the NHL calls “fashion jerseys?”

They keep on marketing those black-on-black silk-screened t-shirts and hats to guys for $10 over what a regular t-shirt or hat usually costs, and I keep thinking to myself, “Why would I want to buy that?  $40 for a hat and you don’t know which team I’m supporting unless you walk right up to me.  That’s dumb...”

I support a team whose main colour is a primary one.  I want that support to stand out.  I want people to say, “Hey, he’s a Red Wings fan” before they say, “What the hell is that, a cactus on his face?” (my goatee is a little bushy)

Mind you, my fashion sense is suspect (my favourite colour is plaid), but I can’t imagine somebody spending extra for something that a) doesn’t fit right or b) panders to one’s gender.

York Rangers forward and former Vogue intern Sean Avery is getting into the bar business—and no, the new nightspot will not be called “Sloppy Seconds.” The popular, if somewhat controversial, 28-year-old Broadway Blueshirt is partnering with Beatrice Inn proprietor Matt Abramcyk in opening an intimate bar and restaurant called Warren 77, located at 77 Warren Street in Tribeca. The pair have been friends for some time.
