Judgement Day… Draft Day… Same Thing in Vancouver

An FYI from Mike Gillis: Roberto Luongo won’t be traded this Friday. (Did anyone seriously think he would be??)
Anyway, a very good article from Iain MacIntyre at the Vancouver Sun, on the goings-on preparing for Draft day:
Gillis said he has been fielding offers for the 10th over-all pick, and expects many more will arrive before the first round Friday night. The final six rounds are Saturday. Gillis holds five picks, none in the third or fourth rounds due to deals the Canucks made in 2007 and 2005.
This is Gillis’s first draft. This will be the first of many judgement days on his leadership.
Indeed. Read the whole thing here (or listen to the audio of MacIntyre’s interview with Gillis).

OTC, far be it from me to suggest that the Canucks are better at anything than the Wings, but…
Using the data at hockeydb.com, I totaled up a few NHL stats for skaters drafted over the ten years from ‘96 to ‘05. The results may surprise you.
First number is for Detroit, the second for Vancouver:
Players
25 28
Games Played
2442 4195
Goals
457 577
Assists
740 1057
Points
1197 1634
Obviously there are many factors that are not reflected here (number of low first round picks, mix of forwards/defense, ability to “season” players in the minors, what the prospects are like right now, etc), but taken at face value, I don’t think you can simply say that Detroit rules and Vancouver drools.

Sure I can. When it comes to the Wings and their rivals, I’m not at all bothered by facts, Shep. ![]()
Okay, you do have some interesting info there, but (in addition to what you pointed out) here’s another problem I see with what you’ve listed. The comparison doesn’t include the period from 2006-2008 when a number of Wings prospects have been particularly productive. A better comparison would be the last ten years…a time when Kenny & Co. have been at their best.
Just my 2¢.

Sorry, my post could have been a bit clearer…
The time span I used was for players drafted those years. I didn’t bother with ‘06 and ‘07 because those prospects haven’t played much yet (the lone exception is Matthias—you can add another player, 4GP, 2G, 0A, 2PTS to the Wings’ ledger if you want).
The stats I used are NHL career totals (not just with DET/VAN), and appear to be current thru the 07-08 season. I say “appear” because I did not confirm all fifty-plus players. I spot checked the stats for Hank, Pavel, and the Sedins, and those are all up to date.

Without going into any numbers, and just by subjective perception - I don’t think of the Canucks as having notably poor drafts. They may not have had as many notable players come out of their system lately, but the Wings have had their share of busts, too.
When I think poor drafting history, I think Toronto, actually. Maybe that’s just because I think of them as having a pool of prospects as deep as a parking lot puddle.

I like any and all things people can possibly find that might be good to say about the Canucks’ drafting history, so my thanks for the calculations, Shep.
And I suppose Vancouver has done well with a few late-rounders in recent years. Kevin Bieksa was 151st overall in 2001; Alex Edler was 91st overall in 2004; Matt Cooke was 144th overall in 1997… and so on.

Using the same criteria as I did before, they’re comparable to Vancouver:
32 players, 3924GP, 554G, 1076A, 1630PTS
They also have a 2006 draftee, Jiri Tlusty, who’s made a decent showing, apparently in more ways than one (rimshot!).

Geez, why didn’t the Wings think of that. Oh, right, they did…years ago. Oh, well, maybe in three or four years the Canucks will have a third or fourth or seventh round pick make it to the “show”.
Almost makes you feel sorry for the hapless Canucks. Almost!
