Love Your Agent

The Vancouver Sun’s Elliott Pap votes for Pat Morris as the best agent in hockey today:
A year ago, he managed to get Todd Bertuzzi an $8 million contract for two seasons with Anaheim, even though ex-Canuck Big Bert looked like a shadow of his former self. The Ducks soon discovered he could no longer produce the goods so they bought him out. Now, only seven days into free agency, Morris convinced the Flames to sign Bertuzzi for $1.95 million. Amazing!
Not a bad choice, but my vote for Agent of the Year goes elsewhere…

I pick Neil Sheehy, the negotiator who sold Leafs’ GM Cliff Fletcher on signing Jeff Finger to a 4 year, $14 million payday.
Sheehy is not a man you want to run into on the lot of a used car dealership.
It all makes you wonder exactly how J.P. Barry is feeling these days. As Mats Sundin’s agent awaits his client’s decision on taking that $20 million offer, you’ve got to figure he’s already spent that 10% commission in his mind. (And is praying every hour that his client doesn’t just retire.) *
On the other hand, Barry made enough coin just last Tuesday alone to buy and sell me, even without Sundin’s decision…

*incidentally, I have no idea if it’s a 10% commission; something like that, I assume.
Update 2:45pm PT: A hockey agent acquaintance was good enough to set me straight by email, regarding commissions:
The standard fee for contract negotiation is 3%. If the agent provides more services (such as financial management), the total fee might be as high as 5 or 6%.
Much appreciated. I learn something new every day.

Well, let’s say it’s 5% then. Even at that rate, it would mean that his cut of Evgeni Malkin’s deal alone is worth more money than I’ll ever see in my lifetime.
Not a bad gig at all.

I believe the standard agent fee ranges from 3-5%. Not a bad gig if you’ve got a lot of horses in the stable.
