Pardon This Interruption…

But it would appear that Michael Wilbon—Washington Post columnist and co-host of ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption”—is dressed up for Halloween on the air today as a Vancouver Canuck.
Yes indeed. The number on the sleeve of his jersey is just ‘07… so no particular player is the target. Just the whole freakin’ team.
Some screenshots I just took:

I’m not sure what the back story is here, but as a Canucks fan, I’m pretty sure I should be insulted…
Although perhaps we should be grateful? This is probably the first time a Canucks jersey has been featured on an ESPN sports show since the Bertuzzi incident.

Do you think it’s possible they shot two versions? The one on ESPN’s website has him wearing a Blackhawk’s Sweater and your screen grabs are from TSN’s broadcast. I didn’t see the TSN version so I don’t know how different the two versions are.
Love your blog!

Dylan -- Indeed it is!
Ian -- Thanks for the nice words about the blog. And yeah, someone else told me they saw (via ESPN) the Blackhawks sweater, too, but on that same broadcast they also saw the Vancouver sweater. I didn’t happen to see the ‘Hawks jersey myself, though. But I didn’t catch the whole show, either.
Regardless, that cheers me up—the ‘Hawks are looking pretty good this season, so maybe ESPN wasn’t just making my favorite team’s jersey into a freakin’ Halloween costume to insult me!

Pardon the Interruption has an odd format: first there is most of the show, then they go to Sportscenter for a bit, then back to finish off PTI. During the segment after the Sportscenter bit he was wearing the Chicago sweater, but during the larger part of the show he was wearing the Vancouver sweater.
I was floored to see hockey on that channel and it wasn’t being run down like a slow squirrel crossing the road for a change.

“I was floored to see hockey on that channel and it wasn’t being run down like a slow squirrel crossing the road for a change.”
Ha! Some day, some way, I definitely have to find a way to steal that line from you.

By all means, be my guest. It would rock if it inspired somebody came up with a graphic of a squirrel in a hockey jersey to go with it.

Hey Alanah --
I didn’t see that episode of PTI, but wanted to say thanks for the excelllent job you did filling in for Paul earlier this week!:)
Two off-topic sidenotes:
First, under the category of “pro sports teams worthy of being made fun of”...the image at the top right of your first screen grab is Detroit Lions’ QB Jon Kitna—who attended a team-sponsored Halloween party for charity dressed as Joe Cullen, the Lions’ assistant coach who was arrested last year (during the season, no less) for placing orders at fast food drive-thru windows while naked. Kitna’s wife went to the party as “Wendy,” complete with uniform and drive-thru worker headset. Personally, I thought it was a hilarious costume, but some folks are up in arms. (Hence “Was Costume Out of Line?” at the bottom of the screen.) Here’s a link to the story with a photo:
BTW, Cullen is still employed by the Lions, who are—amazingly—5-2 so far this season after compiling one of the worst 5-year stretches in NFL history. Interestingly, the only thing Cullen was mad about was that Kitna didn’t win the costume contest!
Second, can someone please tell me what in the world Tony Kornheiser (sp?) is wearing in the second screen grab?

I know it looks like a feathered squid is attacking his head, but he was supposed to be a pirate (had a stuffed parrot on his left shoulder). The last time I saw a hat like that was when I worked as a serving wench at the Maryland Renaissance Festival.

Thanks, Baroque. I think I like the feathered squid better.

Apparently Wilbon was supposed to be Trevor Linden. You can listen to it here:

YzermanZetterberg -- Thanks for the compliment. And for the John Kitna link. Awesome.
Kong -- Thanks for the ESPN link. But why Linden, I wonder? You’d think he’d be dressed up as a ghost, impersonating the frequency Linden gets to play these days…

I think I’m gonna throw up in my mouth a little bit but I agree with AlanaH. Kitna, despite being just a tad hypocritical--Lions fans know what I mean, went WAY out on the frigging limb with that costume. Good on him.

Wilbon has a long-standing love for Trevor Linden. I don’t know how it started, but anytime Linden comes up in the news, there will be discussion of it on PTI. And anytime Wilbon has to make a prediction on a Canucks’ game, he always takes Vancouver on account of Linden.
