Scott Mellanby Joins the Canucks

No, he didn’t un-retire himself… he’s now a “consultant” with the team. From the Vancouver Canucks:

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis today announced that Scott Mellanby will join the club in the capacity of Consultant to the General Manager and Hockey Operations department. Mellanby played 20 years in the National Hockey League with five different teams.

“We are pleased that Scott has agreed to join our Hockey Operations department, his experiences in our League over two decades as a player will be a great asset to me and our entire department,” said Gillis. “Scott displayed strong leadership skills and character throughout his NHL career; these are the same qualities we are looking for as we build our team.”

Updates below...

Strange. Wonder if Gillis was ever his agent?  Incidentally, someone just mentioned to me that Mellanby holds the distinction of having played the 3rd most NHL games in history, without winning a Stanley Cup.

He should feel right at home in Vancouver.

Update 11:10am PT: The CP via the Globe & Mail points out that…

“Mellanby became a fan favourite in Florida when he killed a rat with his hockey stick in the team dressing room.”

How can you not instantly love the guy? I’m sold. smile

Update 11:18am PT: Jim Jamieson at The Province notes,

His hiring may mean that current director of player personnel Lorne Henning is on his way out.

It also occurs to me that Mellanby’s new position is probably exactly the kind of job a lot of Canucks fans were expecting Trevor Linden to slide into.

Update 12:22pm PT: From Craig Custance at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

After working in television on a part-time basis this year, Mellanby said he was looking forward to returning to the game.

“The bottom line is Mike [Gillis] wanted me to be involved and after speaking with him and meeting with him, I wanted to be involved,” said Mellanby, who will maintain his residence in St. Louis. “My role will be a little more defined as we go along.”

As the immortal line in Office Space goes, what would you say you do… exactly?

Who the hell knows. But it’s safe to bet he’s not fetching the GM’s daily morning espresso…

How many more ‘consultants’ does Aquilini hire before it becomes painfully obvious Gillis is not a GM but a figurehead for Francis Aquilini’s mid-life crisis acquisition?  Most of us would be satisfied with a Corvette Convertible, a comb-over and a redhead in tow.  Good luck to us; we’re going to need it with this egomaniac pulling the strings.  Suddenly I am deeply missing McCaw.
