via TSN, a statement from Mats Sundin today:
“I would like to thank all the teams who have expressed such sincere interest in my services.
“The numerous options provided to me were impressive and I have no doubt that each one presented a unique opportunity for me to finish my career in a terrific hockey environment.
“I spent a great deal of time yesterday reflecting upon the teams who stepped forward and the opportunities that each provided. Unfortunately, I am simply not close to being ready to make a decision about resuming my career at this time.
“I wish all the teams the very best and thank them for their interest.”
Alrighty then. Got a “Plan B” (or “C” or “D” or...) in mind, Mr. Gillis?

Ahhhh Mats.... thank you for giving hope to Leafs fans that you’ll once again return to us.
Foolish Mike Gillis. Good idea, except Sundin doesn’t chase money… now who ya gonna sign?

Take you time Mats. You don’t owe shit to anyone.

Ditto 41LongOnes…
Mats, this is one Leafer who says no matter what happens, it was great to have you on the team and screw all the critics…

Thank God. Don’t get me wrong, I like Sundin but he isn’t worth no 10 million per season. But Gilles better pull a blockbuster trade out of his pocket or Gilles free agentcy record will look awefully close to Nonis’s and Burke’s!!!

Matts, your a washed up bum. You aint worth 2 million anymore let alone 10. You missed your pay day and a chance at the cup. Now if you retire, you finish without a cup. If you resign with the Laffs, you’ll still end up without a cup but also without 10 million!!!!!!!!!!!!

So now the Canucks have missed out on Cole, Avery, Rolston and Ryder. Four players I would have loved to see in a Canucks uniform. Looks like Demitra might be our saviour
.

WTH, Hockeyman? Chance at the cup? Does anyone like the chances of the Canucks against Detroit after the addition of Hossa?
No, Sundin isn’t worth $10 mill, but he’s sure worth more than $2. Take your anger out somewhere else, but Sundin is a sure lock first ballot HOF player who has the right to take the time and decide if and where he wants to play, he might not have a cup but he has virtually everything else including having Captained a gold medal Olympic team.
Maybe Gilles makes this offer to Sakic now.

Sounds like he would like to do the wait til the season is half over then come back to see who has the best chance at winning the Cup.

No! Don’t do it! Don’t sign this guy!
That’s the first thing that comes to mind after reading that statement. $20 million for two years is not worth it if the guy is contemplating HIS CAREER.
Not that there’s a lot left on the market, but this doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

Call me suspicious but I don’t believe he’s this indecisive. I think he’s one to take his time but this press release seems more of a ‘don’t call us we’ll call you’,yet listening to his agent yesterday he seemed quite sure Mat was returning to the NHL.

First...it was a stupid offer.
Second...if Mats wasn’t interested, then why did he float his name on the open market?
I think we should have all figured out what kind of guy he was during the trade deadline last year, where he remained quiet throughout, generated interest from many teams and then backed out at the last second. Reminds me of a kindergartner getting ready for the first day of school.

It was the only offer Vancouver could have made to compete. $7 million to come to a city on the West Coast that is in transition and logs the highest travel miles in the league just would not have cut it.
I believe Sundin is acting like any player at his age who is in high demand. He hung on to the Leafs out of loyalty when most would have long since bailed out.
