The Replacements

The news that CBC probably doesn’t intend to renew their long-time licensing agreement to play the Hockey Night in Canada theme music, will have some people freaking out a bit. Or a lot.
But others already have ideas for replacement songs for the famous broadcast.
So first here are some musical options for next season to start us off, then hopefully readers can provide other brilliant ideas.
Courtesy of Brad Frenette at the National Post, an opening list:
1. The Hockey Song, Stompin’ Tom Connors
2. Fifty Mission Cap, Tragically Hip
3 The Ballad of Wendel Clark, Part 1&2, The Rheostatics
4. Hit Somebody, Warren Zevon
5. The Lonely End of the Rink, Tragically Hip
6. Danielle (She Don’t Care About Hockey), by The Hanson Brothers
7. We’re Going to Win, Bryan Adams
Oy… Bryan Adams?? But still, full points to Frenette for having the guts to even start this process.
Most of us have heard the original theme from our earliest memories; it’s almost irreplaceable. CBC must realize that as well, and I expect they already have plans for an entirely new theme song with an original composition.
But if they don’t?
Then my nomination is for a Red Rider tune—or a Tom Cochrane solo bit. But I have no ideas which specific song.
Any other suggestions?
Update 2:41pm PT: CBC says they’re still bargaining for rights to use the current theme music, so our speculations are (fortunately) just a back-up plan for now.
Scott Moore, the executive director of CBC Sports, told Newsworld on Thursday that negotiations for a new licence fee are ongoing with the representatives of composer Dolores Claman.
“We’ve been reaching out to [Claman] and her representative, and haven’t heard back,” Moore said. “We’re prepared to do a deal, we’re prepared to talk, but we’re not prepared to do a deal at all costs.

It’s just wrong I tell you...next thing you know they’ll be replacing me with a Swede!

Let’s not forget the 1976 pop classic...Saturday Night...yes...the Bay City Rollers… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VciNPhRPVbI
Ok, but seriously, they’re going to replace our real national anthem?!?! Shouldn’t this require a referendum or something? Lose Bob Cole, keep the theme song!

I think it’s a shame that they’re doing away with it. I appreciate the nostalgia factor of HNIC. I remember being in my school band in a contest to play that theme song ‘the best’ somehow.
Now, nostalgia goes to a point. Bob Cole is too much nostalgia. When the final buzzer sounded, even as tying the game went until the final -0.2 seconds or so, he sounded anything but exciting or enthralled. You’ve contributed great things Cole, but I will compare you now to Stan Lee in the ‘Angry Dad’ episode of the Simpsons.

Yes, I agree Bobby sounded defeated. It was very anti-climatic. The Pittsburgh crowd was saying more than Cole was. It felt very boring and dull…

ACK! No songs from the Zamboni’s on that list??? THE best (and only) all hockey band.

I have heard and read this story from various sources except the CBC.
On CBCNW, they reported that the CBC has not confirmed it and asked for yes or no input from viewers.
Is this a test?

Not to but the cart behind the horse, but CBC really needs to stop this from happening… As much as he’s a bigoted idiot, keeping Don Cherry was a move absolutely essential to the viability of CBC’s NHL broadcasts…
Keeping the theme is exponentially more important… If they lose this song, I really fear for the future of HNIC… No joke.

Some interesting options, guys. (I can’t believe I forgot The Zambonis, either!)
Meanwhile, as I updated on the post above, all of this might just be an emergency back-up plan. CBC is still in negotiations with the song’s composer… so we’ll just have to wait and see.
I’m shocked no one has suggested an Anne Murray tune yet, though… a Canadian standard, is she not??

Anne Murray?...hmmm, how about a trio.
Anne Murray, Celine Dion and Rita McNeil singing Stompin Tom’s “Hockey Game"…

I’m pretty sure TSN used the Bryan Adams tune for an intro, a few years back…

Savvy negotiating tactics all around…

They did. And it sucked.
