The Swedish Canadian

CBC’s Satellite Hotstove just wrapped up with a few words on the Mats Sundin fiasco situation that might be of interest to Canucks fans.

Al Strachan made the comment that Sundin may be leaning towards Vancouver, in part because staying in Canada is his preference—he doesn’t want to leave Canada due to the nature of his investments.  However he also emphasized that John Ferguson is asking for a lot in return.

Pierre LeBrun’s perspective is that more than anything, Sundin really wants to stay in Toronto.

I guess we’ll see. Sundin has a NTC after all—he can go wherever he wants.  And with the Leafs having only 44 points, almost zero hope of making the playoffs at this rate, and their captain a free agent this summer, JFJ and his bosses really don’t have much choice here.

Update 6:10pm PT: Spector also summarizes the Hotstove talk above with his opinion that, as long as the Leafs are in the playoff hunt, Sundin won’t be traded.

No doubt, true, and so it’ll probably all come down to where the Leafs rest in the standings by trade deadline day, late February.

Huge mistake.  I’ve never been impressed with Sundin’s play in International competition...he pulls bone-headed penalties and overall isn’t the stud of Sweden that he should be.  I think a better gamble would be Foppa...especially if Foppa just wants to play and isn’t looking to hose an NHL team of a contract.

Sundin has delivered year in and year out in toronto on teams that have been mediocre at best.

BTW, if Van get’s him,Alanah owes me some cheap beer, cause I called it.

Expat -- Not that these are the only choices I want as a Canucks fan, but if I had to choose between Sundin and Forsberg, I’d definitely choose Sundin.  So many reasons, not the least of which being that Foppa still can’t seem to stand on his skates without crutches!

Ryan -- So we agree it’ll be cheap beer? Sure… I’ll give it to ya—If Sundin somehow makes it to Vancouver, you get full points—you called it! smile

This would be crazy to see Sundin leave. I feel so bad for him. He has worked his but off every year and the leafs just cannot make it work. He is an amazing player and I think he will do amazing in another city.

Forsberg may be far more of a risk due to the injuries, but the Canucks wouldn’t have to sacrifice their future to get him the way they would in a Sundin trade, which is why I’d take a gamble on him. I wouldn’t mind the Canucks trading for Sundin if it met two conditions: first, they were playing well enough (which they aren’t really lately, IMO) that his addition could make them a legitimate Cup contender, and second, they didn’t have to give up too much. Either Swedish centre (if healthy) would be a great help though: they’d put up points of their own and give Naslund some talent to work with.

Imagine T.O. management, between a rock and a hard place. Basically on paper they NEED to trade him to start the rebuilding. Everyone knows this, yet the media/fans of Toronto seem to believe they deserve SO MUCH in return.

I can’t see a team giving up what they are suggesting in T.O. media.

So either they do the trade and get less back than the media is suggesting, T.O. management gets raked over the coals in the press, OR they hang onto him because they can’t get what is being suggested in the media, and delay rebuilding, and continue the suffering.

I don’t care, so long as he doesn’t go to the FLAMERS. Imagine him and Iginla coming at ya.
