Wanna Wii?

A moderately-quiet day in hockey news but there was this note from the NHL today:

image2K Sports [...] today announced that the next iteration of the popular hockey franchise, NHL 2K9, will be coming to the Wii™ console from Nintendo this fall. As the first and only officially licensed NHL and NHLPA video game for Wii, NHL 2K9 will offer fans the fun opportunity to play like the pros using the Wii Remote™ controller as a hockey stick, and enjoy playing hockey in a wholly unique and entertaining experience like never before.

“Nintendo is thrilled to have 2K Sports’ NHL 2K9 on the Wii platform this season,” said Steve Singer, VP of Licensing at Nintendo of America Inc.  “This title has been highly anticipated by our Wii consumers who will now be able to use the Wii Remote to face-off, play hockey, and fire a slap shot in their living rooms.”

I’m not an avid gamer, but this news just made me a bit poorer—I swear I’m buying a Wii, just for this thing.

As Steve Tilley said in the Calgary Sun back when the Wii was first introduced: “How cool would it be to grip the Nintendo Wii’s motion-sensing controller like the handle of a hockey stick, miming wrist shots and one-timers and maybe the odd crippling cross-check...?”

Awesome. Although I fully expect people are gonna hurt themselves…

Update 12:20pm PT: Photo of the game cover, courtesy of the NHL…

*photoshop mockup of the stick was done by some other hopeful NHL Wii fan. Unfortunately the game will just be used with a standard remote, though.

Is there a link to the NHL story?

Posted by Karina  on  06/12  at  02:45 PM

Sorry, Karina, but there isn’t. The information I put in the post is what I got from the press release on the NHL’s media site—and there’s no public access to that. And the only accessible online links they provided there are to Nintendo.ca and to Take2Games.

I’m sure more will be more written in coming days, though.

If they do a hockey stick it would probably be really small similar to how they’ve done the golf club or baseball bat:

Alanah, where did that hockey stick mockup come from? Is that supposed to be an accessory released for the game? Personally I expect it will just use the small Wiimote controller rather than a stick which is unnecessary (you wouldnt need a blade extending out-- thats dangerous too).

bcrt2000 - I made a note at the bottom of the post (perhaps you missed it); just found reference to that image on some gaming site.  But yes, the actual game will only use the standard remote controller, according to the release.  (But I think the stick would be fun!)

Karina - here’s a public link for the press release. It just came out.

Thanks, Alanah.  I’m just looking for info on whether you’ll be able to play eachother over the Wii network.

My husband and I may lose any ability to do anything other than play video games if that is the case.  As it is, Mario Kart Wii takes up a lot of our lives!

Rick Nash should be using that mockup stick on the cover of the game raspberry

I’d much rather be on the ice rather than swing a mini stick at the TV. A gaming controller, like with an x-box, is ideal for games and a hockey stick for actual hockey.

HOW cool???

can’t wait for this!

move over Mario Kart and Guitar Hero! smile

Dear Family,

I don’t care about anything else--get me a Wii and NHL2K9 for the Wii for my birthday, and I will be happy camper.

Love,
AQ

Wow, where the hell did that come from?

Posted by The Acid Queen from Raleigh, NC  on  07/20  at  03:19 PM

Hockey to Wii. That would be awsome. Now all they need is a Captain Falcon game and F-Zero and everything would be complete!

This is great! A hockey game for the Wii is something I will definitely get.
