Canucks Golf Season Updates
by Alanah McGinley on 05/07/08 at 07:28 PMComments (8)
Just a few stories mildly related to Canuckish-type things:
- Dave Nonis is being summoned for an interview in hell
- Alex Edler made a not-so-endearing contribution to one very embarrassing Swedish team loss at the World Championships - a 10 minute game misconduct penalty
- A company called Coleman Analytics has five NHL teams (and they’re looking to add Vancouver to their list of clients) that are paying them up to $100K a year for “basic” analytics services. Honestly, I bet plenty of obsessive & mathematically-inclined hockey fans would gladly kick those numbers out for free, or maybe a bit of swag. (I know, I know. I’m over-simplifying… but at least let The Forechecker bid for the job.)

Getting Way Too Excited
by Alanah McGinley on 04/28/08 at 05:31 PMComments (0)
David Pratt of Team 1040, on his Pratt’s Rant blog:
THE VANCOUVER CANUCKS SEASON ENDED WEEKS AGO…
YOUR HOCKEY POOL IS IN THE TOILET…
THE ENTRY DRAFT IS NOT UNTIL JUNE 20TH…AND FREE AGENCY DOES NOT ARRIVE FOR MORE THAN 2 MONTHS…
RIGHT NOW IT’S TOUGH FOR MOST HOCKEY FANS IN THIS CITY TO GET EXCITED ABOUT ANYTHING…
THAT’S ABOUT TO CHANGE…
The Pratt is excited about the upcoming World Championships, but points out that the only Canuck on any roster is Alex Edler for Sweden (no Sedins?! First I heard of it.) Anyway, message to Pratt: push down the caps-lock key again. Please. You’re killing me.
Meanwhile, if neither the Stanley Cup Playoffs nor the World Championships hold any excitement for you, there’s always “ESPN After Dark”—for the sultry (read: creepy) way to enjoy the fake-sports broadcasting ESPN has so perfected in hockey’s absence:

The Hives, Existentialist Hockey and a Song

From Pitchfork:
We know damn well that Sweden’s Hives rule the live stage, but what about the ice rink?

Time to Panic?
by Alanah McGinley on 02/15/08 at 05:09 PMComments (6)
February is a hockey fan’s worst headache—especially when their favorite team is on the bubble and experts start dispensing their wisdom.
Case in point, in Allan Muir’s mailbag on SI, a Canucks fan writes a panicked note:
I’ll admit it. I’m in full panic mode over my Canucks. I’m starting to think the playoffs are a longshot at best unless we add a big piece to the puzzle, and soon. What do you think of our chances?
-- Steve Joe, Sacramento
A Canucks fan in a panic is hardly news (that’s just what we do) but Muir’s response seems pretty over-the-top:

“Glorified Beer League” to NHL YoungStars
by Alanah McGinley on 01/26/08 at 01:19 PMComments (4)
It’s the Edler Hour or something this week, as Alexander Edler’s trip to the YoungStars Game has caught the attention of various reporters seeking to profile the latest Swedish Canuck. Sportnet.ca dropped some comments today, following broadcaster Jim Hughson’s remarks on the player’s unexpected rise on the NHL Network yesterday.
But it’s Iain MacIntyre who tells the full story of how Vancouver snatched Edler—a sleeper pick at #91—from under the nose of Detroit (via the National Post). Here are some of the details…

Planning Ahead
by Alanah McGinley on 11/30/07 at 09:39 PMComments (5)
Allan Muir at Sports Illustrated offers a suggestion to boost Vancouver Canucks scoring needs:
GM Dave Nonis has to recognize that a window has opened up here that requires him to take a proactive approach. Sacrificing a piece of the future—defenseman Luc Bourdon appears expendable with the emergence of Alexander Edler—to add some bite to the forward unit is a must move. There’s no hurry, of course, but Nonis can’t be the one left looking for a chair when the music stops.
Bourdon might well be expendable to the Canucks, but—despite his likely future value—is any GM going to hand over a proven goal scorer for a rookie that’s yet to prove himself in any substantive way, and whose development has been constantly questioned? Bourdon’s trade value is difficult to predict, but Muir’s probably right assuming he’s up for grabs if the right deal came along.
Just no idea what that deal might be, and no good rumors either… where’s Spector when I need him?!
