Concerns About Bernier. And Everything Else.

Chuqui at Two For Elbowing—who certainly knows far more about Steve Bernier’s history than I do—wrote a great post yesterday wondering about the sequence of events leading up to his trade to Vancouver:

Even recently, Bernier was being touted as a key cog in the Buffalo future.

And now he’s off to Vancouver for a 2nd and a third draft pick?

Alarm bells are going off here. When a player starts becoming the pass-around pack, unless it’s Mike Sillinger, you have to wonder why; especially when teams say nice things about them and then trade them.

The Game Must Go On—But at What Price?

Watching the Sabres/Panthers matchup on Sunday, the accidental slash of Olli Jokinen’s skate blade into the throat of Richard Zednik was a terrible sight for all who witnessed it, much less to experience the horror first-hand as Zednik did.

Fortunately, all indications are that Zednik is doing fine so far.  In a state of what must surely have been shock, he moved towards the bench following some internal autopilot as a trainer came out to put pressure on the wound, slowing the blood coming from his throat.  He left the arena and was quickly in surgery, apparently stabilized according to reports.

But one has to wonder at the rationale to let this game continue after such a brutal incident. The show must go on? Perhaps, but who exactly should be deciding that?  And was it really the best decision?

Is THIS the Year?

With thanks to Greg Wyshynski at AOL Sports, I came across this cynical little video parodying the NHL’s advertisement theme, “Is This The Year?”

I actually like those ads just fine, but what the hell—I enjoy cynical-obnoxiousness as much as the next guy. (or more) But even more importantly, I could probably listen to this screwball interpretation of Sidney Crosby’s voice all day.

Greg suggests that Crosby sounds like “Emo"… and I agree, but would just like to add that Emo sounds a wee bit wasted…
