Luongo’s Future Waterboy: Sanford or Auld?

by Alanah McGinley on 06/09/08 at 07:44 PM

I noticed this Canucks’ rumor buried at the back of an unrelated article in the Boston Globe a couple days ago. I saved it in hopes of finding out more but that effort went exactly nowhere.  So here it is, from Bruins reporter Fluto Shinzawa:

According to a Vancouver source, the Canucks would prefer to trim goalie Roberto Luongo’s workload in 2008-09. Over 73 appearances last season, Luongo played a total of 4,232:32, sixth-most among NHL goalies. With backup Curtis Sanford heading to the open market, one candidate to become Luongo’s No. 2 man is Boston’s Alex Auld. In 2005-06, Auld played in 67 games for the Canucks, posting a 2.94 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage. Ex-GM Dave Nonis shipped Auld out to Florida in a package for Luongo…

Luongo Staying Out

Earlier today, Jason Botchford at The Ice Hole reported that Roberto Luongo has been nursing a rib injury, forcing him to sit out Monday night in Los Angeles.  Now the CP is reporting that the Canucks have also called up goaltender Drew MacIntrye from the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

Luongo told reporters later he has been nursing a bruised rib all week after being injured Dec. 2 at Minnesota.

“It just got worse over the last two days, and I’ve been in pain all day,” he said. “I was trying to see how I felt in warmups, but it wasn’t good enough for me to go. It’s not broken, but it hurts when I breathe and it hurts when I move. It’s tough to do your job under those circumstances. It’s day-to-day right now. Hopefully it’s just a few days. It’s almost got to heal on its own.”

Additionally, Mason Raymond and Jason Jaffray were also called up from the Moose.

A Scientific Study of Some NHL Goalies

Allow me to present this scientifically-based, docu-dramatic metaphor, which fully illustrates the personality attributes of a select sample of NHL goalies:

LSD Spider (starring Jose Theodore)
Caffeine Spider, (starring Dominik Hasek)
Marijuana Spider, (starring Ilya Bryzgalov)
Alcohol Spider, (starring Ed Belfour)
Crack Spider, (starring Roberto Luongo)

‘Worst Goalie Ever’ Doing 17 Years for Bank Robbery

From the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction files:

The worst goalie in the history of professional hockey is spending his 40th birthday in prison.

Not for atrocious goaltending, mind you - though Attila Ambrus once gave up 23 goals in a game, and 88 in a memorable five-game stretch - but for robbing banks during a post-Iron Curtain crime spree that became the stuff of legend.

Seven years into a 17-year sentence, one of his few regrets is that it’s become harder than ever to follow the just-launched NHL season. So quit complaining about trying to find “Versus” on your cable system.  “The only time I can see clips,” Ambrus lamented in a recent jailhouse interview, “is through the state-owned Hungarian television channel.”

I just love stories like this; dude even has a MySpace page, for godsakes…

And 23 goals given up in one game? People really need to start laying off poor Cloutier.

This Canucks photo gallery reveals Roberto Luongo’s newest mask.

Honestly, it’s kinda freakin’ me out. Perhaps it’ll freak out his opponents, too? I’ll live in hope…
