Canucks Lose Morrison For the Season

by Alanah McGinley on 03/27/08 at 01:14 PM

From TSN:

The Vancouver Canucks’ postseason hopes have taken a hit.

Brendan Morrison is done for the season and the playoffs after suffering a torn ACL. The 32-year-old has battled injuries this season and missed significant time (38 games) after having wrist surgery in mid-December.

Update 10:30am PT:
And in other news: Roberto Luongo has now left the team for the greener pastures of a Florida maternity ward, and about 1000 (and counting) Canucks fans are expected to throw themselves off the Lions Gate bridge sometime later this afternoon.

In other words… just another day in Vancouver.

What’s Up in Los Angeles?

There was an Iain MacIntyre article in the Vancouver Sun this morning which brought up some serious issues about Dan Cloutier’s experience since his trade to the Los Angeles Kings.  In it, MacIntyre addressed issues about Cloutier’s recent career that hadn’t been publicized before.

Specifically:

But harder than stopping the puck was the feeling Cloutier had—has—that the Kings weren’t doing much to help him.

The team insisted he shed his birdcage wire mask and helmet, citing insurance issues. Cloutier was never comfortable in a traditional mask, and a few games into last season he was feeling physical discomfort.

He was having hip pain. He volunteered to keep playing because the Kings’ other goalie, Mathieu Garon, had a broken finger. Cloutier’s pain got worse, but the team insisted initially there was little wrong with him.

Krajicek Gone for the Season

by Alanah McGinley on 02/19/08 at 03:36 PM

From TSN, some dismal—though not entirely unexpected—news:

CKNW radio in Vancouver has learned that the Canucks have lost defenceman Lukas Krajicek for the remainder of the season.  He will have season-ending surgery on his shoulder this week in Vancouver.

In far more positive news, Kevin Bieksa appears to be shaping up fast:

[He] participated in the full practice Monday but won’t play for the Canucks until he gets at least one American Hockey League game under his belt with the Manitoba Moose.

“I felt a little bit better today than the other day,” said Bieksa, out since Nov. 1 with a lacerated calf. “It’s hard to say if I will be ready to play this weekend. It could happen.”

Mitchell Out with Fractured Vertebra

by Alanah McGinley on 01/29/08 at 03:57 PM

From the CP (via Canada East Online):

Vancouver Canuck defenceman Willie Mitchell is sidelined with a fractured vertebra in his back.

Mitchell said Tuesday he won’t accompany the NHL team when it leaves Wednesday on a four-game road trip.

Mitchell, who has already missed three games, said he hurt his back after being checked during a game against Calgary after Christmas. He played nine games before the pain became too great.

Uh oh…

Update 2:45pm PT -- CBC:

There is no specific recovery time for this type of injury — a stress fracture to the L2 vertebra in Mitchell’s back — but Vigneault said it could affect him for up to five weeks.  Vigneault also said Mitchell could play through the injury without aggravating it, though the pain might be too much.

“All the doctors that checked him, have all came to the same conclusion, with this type of stress fracture, if he can endure the pain, there is no way he can aggravate it,” the coach said. “It shouldn’t be that much longer, knowing Willie Mitchell, in my mind anyways.”

Canucks End Mid-Season Vacation

The Canucks end a 4 night vacation to return to action Tuesday, healthy, practiced and ready to stomp the Islanders…

Or not.  After all, this is the Canucks we’re talking about:

The Vancouver Canucks’ blue-line corps, already reeling from the indefinite absence of Mattias Ohlund (concussion) and Kevin Bieksa (lacerated calf), has another potential problem on its hands.

Brendan Morrison Getting Surgery

by Alanah McGinley on 12/12/07 at 06:45 PM

From TSN,

The Vancouver Canucks have announced that forward Brendan Morrison will undergo surgery on his wrist later this week.

Morrison has been experiencing chronic wrist pain and did not make the trip to Anaheim for Wednesday’s game with the Ducks.

“After further consultation with our team doctors it was decided that surgery was the best course of action,” said Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis. “The best long term decision for Brendan and our hockey club is to have this addressed immediately.”

No word on how long Morrison will be out now.

Update 4:19pm PT: How long? Not surprisingly, the CP uses the word “indefinitely” which has an ugly ring to it.  But I suppose, with any luck, Canucks fans won’t hear it again anytime soon in relation to Roberto Luongo

NHL’s Ironman Halted at 542 Games

Sportsnet.ca is reporting:

Canucks forward Brendan Morrison will see his consecutive games streak of 542 end on Wednesday night when he sits out vs. the Anaheim Ducks.

Morrison injured his wrist in the pre-season and the injury continues to nag him, so he has been sent back to Vancouver for treatment.

His streak is currently the longest in the NHL. The all-time record is held by the Montreal Canadiens’ Doug Jarvis with 964.

Luongo Staying Out

Earlier today, Jason Botchford at The Ice Hole reported that Roberto Luongo has been nursing a rib injury, forcing him to sit out Monday night in Los Angeles.  Now the CP is reporting that the Canucks have also called up goaltender Drew MacIntrye from the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

Luongo told reporters later he has been nursing a bruised rib all week after being injured Dec. 2 at Minnesota.

“It just got worse over the last two days, and I’ve been in pain all day,” he said. “I was trying to see how I felt in warmups, but it wasn’t good enough for me to go. It’s not broken, but it hurts when I breathe and it hurts when I move. It’s tough to do your job under those circumstances. It’s day-to-day right now. Hopefully it’s just a few days. It’s almost got to heal on its own.”

Additionally, Mason Raymond and Jason Jaffray were also called up from the Moose.

Unconventional Forsberg Diagnosis

by Alanah McGinley on 11/06/07 at 11:17 AM

The North American press and hockey blogs have spent months analyzing the possible return of Peter Forsberg to the NHL (and often with the kind of reverence usually attributed to the devout contemplating the resurrection of Jesus Christ) but their hopes were sadly interrupted yesterday with the news that Jesus… err… Foppa… hurt his ankle.

But while those same analysts seriously ponder how this travesty could happen—studying the various miscues of Forsberg’s recent career as he’s attempted to regain his health and strength—the Swedish newspapers haven’t been nearly as preoccupied with all the accepted jargon.

They have their own theory about how Forsberg’s career ground to a halt:

Morrison’s NHL Iron Man Streak at Risk?

by Alanah McGinley on 09/27/07 at 06:33 PM

From Elliott Pap at the Vancouver Sun,

[Brendan] Morrison, the current NHL iron man with 512 consecutive games played, injured his wrist in Wednesday’s 4-3 shootout loss to San Jose. He did not practise today and coach Alain Vigneault said he was waiting word on the severity of the injury.

“Brendan is going to get it checked out this afternoon and we’ll have further details tomorrow,” Vigneault explained following practice at Burnaby 8-Rinks.

It would be very disappointing if Morrison’s long NHL streak were to end, but on the bright side Pap reports that other members of the Vancouver Ambulance Brigade (Rick Rypien, Byron Ritchie and Aaron Miller) are all ready to go.  So that’s something good, anyway…

The Elephant in GM Place

imageLast night I had a chance to interview Andy and Matt—two of the bloggers behind the very popular Battle of Alberta.  (The recording of that conversation should be available early next week). But one thing they brought up has stuck in my mind, and it’s something I’ve avoided thinking about too much: that the Colorado Avalanche might not actually suck this year. Depressing.

And I suppose that’s a snotty understatement; the truth is, the Avalanche seriously improved themselves this summer, as did others, which is sort of the point of this post.

The already-tight NW division has gotten tougher since last season, and I wonder if Vancouver might be affected by this more than any other team.

Sami Salo Out Indefinitely

by Alanah McGinley on 09/17/07 at 03:33 PM

The apparent wholesale slaughter of Canucks’ players yesterday doesn’t have a happy ending - at least not in the case of Sami Salo

From the Globe & Mail,

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo is out indefinitely after sustaining a hairline fracture in his wrist in an intra-squad game in Victoria on Sunday.
Salo, who missed 15 regular-season games last season due to a variety of injuries, was hurt after being hit by teammate Jeff Cowan.
On Monday, Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said Salo was too ‘nonchalant’ going into the corner prior to the hit.

(Also several updates below regarding Luongo...)

Canucks Weekend Odds & Ends

imagePlenty of interesting trivia about things relating to the team this past week. From Trevor Linden to Anson Carter to events earlier today regarding Yo! Luongo… here are the odds & ends.

Update: Canucks defenseman Sami Salo has been injured Sunday as well. Story is added to bottom of this post.
Update 2: The Trevor Linden injury is also now added down below.  (I can’t stomach making new posts for every freakish Canucks’ injury today...)

Vancouver favorite Trevor Linden may not be at the stage in his career that he can set the league on fire, but he’s proven to be a valuable part of the franchise. Last season’s playoffs were one notable part of that, which led to him signing on for another season with the team.

With a work ethic that’s impossible to beat, adoration from local fans that can’t be bought, and a salary that doesn’t edge the cap, Linden faced down his summer workout with creativity.

Roberto Luongo Injured Sunday

by Alanah McGinley on 09/16/07 at 03:40 PM

From Iain MacIntyre at the Vancouver Sun,

Vancouver Canuck goalie Roberto Luongo left the National Hockey League team’s intrasquad game injured after being hit on the collarbone or throat by Brad Isbister’s high shot.

Luongo, a finalist for both the Hart and Vezina trophies last season, lay facedown the ice for several minutes at the Memorial Centre in Victoria after getting beaned by Isbister late in the first period Sunday morning.

How to Make a Canucks Fan Puke

image(aside from throwing a Mark Messier Canucks Invitational Golf Tournament, that is...)

The Vancouver Canucks opened training camp in Victoria on Thursday, and while anticipating that—all things considered—I expect Canucks’ fans would prefer that this is NOT a thrilling day-to-day ride.  Yet one of the opener’s events clearly violated such good common sense:

A few hearts stood still at Vancouver Canucks training camp today when Canucks winger Jeff Cowan piled into star netminder Roberto Luongo only a few minutes into the first set of drills.

Cowan lost his balance during a routine one-on-one and slid hard into the Hart Trophy finalist at high speed. The two became entangled in the net and it seemed like eternity, although it was only seconds…
