Even When Vancouver Wins, They Lose
by Alanah McGinley on 03/18/08 at 04:49 AMComments (8)
From TSN:
The Vancouver Canucks big win over the Phoenix Coyotes Monday night was a costly one. The Canucks lost winger Mason Raymond mid-way through the third, when he was hit knee-on-knee by Coyotes defenceman Keith Ballard. Early reports have Raymond out of action for four weeks with an MCL sprain.
There was no penalty called on the play, but Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault thinks the league should look into what he called ‘a dirty play’.
Was it a dirty play? That wasn’t my impression. Ballard was just moving fast and missed his target. While the results are terrible—and it probably should have drawn a penalty—it didn’t appear to be purposeful, just a case of bad timing when trying to connect an awkward hit.

Ohlund Gone For Season?
by Alanah McGinley on 03/06/08 at 02:51 PMComments (1)
From TSN, dire news with a wee bit of hope:
The Vancouver Canucks received some bad news Thursday as they learned defenceman Mattias Ohlund has bone chips in his left knee.
In an attempt to reduce the swelling in the joint, Ohlund has been administered anti-inflammatory drugs. He will then be given four to six days to see if the swelling has gone down enough to return to play.
If Ohlund has not recovered enough to play at that time he will undergo arthroscopic surgery, ending his season.
There’s no way to put a positive spin on this. And note that the injury happened in that losing game against Colorado.
How everyone doesn’t buy my theory that the Avs are the Evil Empire, I’ll just never understand…

The Game Must Go On—But at What Price?
by Alanah McGinley on 02/11/08 at 12:16 AMComments (12)
Watching the Sabres/Panthers matchup on Sunday, the accidental slash of Olli Jokinen’s skate blade into the throat of Richard Zednik was a terrible sight for all who witnessed it, much less to experience the horror first-hand as Zednik did.
Fortunately, all indications are that Zednik is doing fine so far. In a state of what must surely have been shock, he moved towards the bench following some internal autopilot as a trainer came out to put pressure on the wound, slowing the blood coming from his throat. He left the arena and was quickly in surgery, apparently stabilized according to reports.
But one has to wonder at the rationale to let this game continue after such a brutal incident. The show must go on? Perhaps, but who exactly should be deciding that? And was it really the best decision?
