From The Fourth Period, this rumor:

In an attempt to acquire an impact player, the Vancouver Canucks are actively dangling the 10th overall selection in this month’s draft as trade bait.  According to a Vancouver source, the Canucks are looking to obtain an NHL-ready talent who will make an immediate impact on the team.  The Canucks’ first-round draft pick is believed to be available, as well as other team assets and players.

Mr. Smith Mystery

Buried in a short article in the Edmonton Journal was this tidbit from Jim Matheson yesterday:

SCOOP DU JOUR—The New Jersey Devils will sign former Oilers captain Jason Smith this summer when he’s an unrestricted free agent.  Smith started his NHL career with the Devils.

At Spector’s Hockey, Lyle observes, “That’s possible, but I think such a signing would come after GM Lou Lamoriello has addressed his lack of scoring depth at center this summer.”

Fair enough, but it still makes me wonder…

NHLPA’s Player of the Day

imageYesterday’s Player of the Day.... the Sabres must be so pleased.

I realize this sort of thing happens all the time, but seriously: no one can find a pic of this guy in a Flyers’ jersey?

The guy’s getting a bazillion dollars to play in Philly over the coming 5 years.  I think “franchise player” is a reasonable definition of Briere’s job at this point.

It just makes you wonder at the people doing the marketing around this league sometimes. The NHL’s own media guide also still promotes Briere with the same photo.

And what is really the point of “Player of the Day” if not marketing the league and the player?
