17 Points…Stress Train Is Full

Update 2229: Wings win 3-2 in OT.  Guess the “best teams” don’t always win.  In “Hockeytown” too.

Update 2027:  Give the “best team” the Cup they deserve.  Tied 1-1 two minutes after the last update which was the cause of the goal which led to this update.

Update 2024: Wings lead the “best team in hockey” 1-0.  I’m just sayin’.  Still early. I’m sure, even though the Wings are 13-0-2 against the NW, that the “best team” will prevail.

I’m worried.  Worried sick I tell you. Stressing.  Total anguish.  A seventeen point lead in the conference is not enough on February 5th.  To confirm it, check out Wild Puck Banter.  The State of Hockey is right on our heels.

And if that’s not enough to send you into convulsions of concern, WPB is also claiming the Wild are “the best team in hockey.”

I guess we’ll see tonite, eh?

I guess I’m selfish. My grandfather passed on Sunday and I just wanted to let everyone know...in a more permiment way other than the chat. He raised me along side of my mother and grandmother (2003) and with that made me a life long Red Wings fan. Thick or thin ladies and gents, through thick and thin. He aquired his first tv to watch third period games broadcasted in Detroit, and one of my favorite memories of Grandma was at a home game in Detroit against the flames when a fight broke out and she yelled “give him the old one two”.  It still has not hit me, and probably won’t until I watch the game this weekend on NBC...but we have someone up above pulling for the Wings. He told me that we can’t win them all, but dammit we will win the big ones this year.

LETS GO RED WINGS!!!!!!

I’m so sorry for your loss.  :(

I wish I had something more sympathetic than a frownie face, but that’s one of the limitations of the internet.  Words can only express so much.

Sorry for your loss, and a great story about someone who obviously loved the game and loved life.

For the game, worst two periods I’ve seen all year, but we’ve seen this act before, the Wings dog it for 2 periods, hang around and then flip on the switch for the 3rd. We’ll see what happens.

Called it baby.

Wild fell asleep and it cost them. Great pass by Hank.

The Wild sat on a one-goal lead and the Wings took advantage of it.  By the start of OT, the Wings SOGs for the third period was 16 to the Wild’s measly 3.  That’s too much hope for the Wings because they carried that momentum into OT.

Go Wings!!!

My prayers are for you and your family in this time of loss. Only thing the Wild are best at is running that trap, and i’m not only referring to their collective pie holes.  They are good no doubt, but Cup Contender, I think not.  I hope they can draw Anaheim in the first round though, they can both beat each other half to death again.

eyesris—Deeepest condolences to you and yours. May your happy memories carry you through this difficult time and stay with you always.

RE: the game—the way these guys keep finding ways to win is starting to remind me of 2001-02. Just sayin’…

eyesris - Please accept my condolences to you and your family on your loss.  What a great tribute you posted.  It gave me a big smile.

For the Wings, when is the last time you saw Datsyuk have that bad of a game?  I really didn’t like the way they played for two periods and then came the third period...Wow.

Datsyuk was hampered somewhat by two ridiculous penalties. First, he was called for “roughing” while being mugged in front of the Wild net. Then, it was “holding the stick” when: a.) he actually appeared to touch the other player’s glove and b.) the touch lasted for about 1 second.

Definitely not his best game, but garbage calls certainly don’t help.

eyesris… please accept my condolences, too.  What a wonderful tribute you posted.  I can remember (vaguely) those old 3rd period broadcasts.  Here’s to your grandfather…

25 point lead in the Central.
17 point lead in the West.
17 point lead in the NHL (with 2 games at hand on Dallas)

that’s freaking ridiculous.  anyone know how we could find the record for point leads at the end of a season?  fastest to 100 points?

2 players in the top 10 in points.
2 players in the top 10 in assists.
5 of the top 6 players in +/- are Wings.
Osgood and Hasek are #1 and #2 in GAA.

#2 in goals per game
#1 in goals against per game
#1 in 5-on-5 situations (by a lot)
#3 PP
#7 PK
#1 in shots per game
#1 in shots against

most dominant season ever?  I’d say so.

Everyone - thank you for your kind words and thoughts. It kent a lot to my Grandfather when I told him that there were Wings fans all over the country thinking about him and preying for him. Chief, thanks to you he was able to watch a few more minutes of a game on my laptop and he wanted me to specifically thank you for that.  I don’t think he would be too happy about the loss lastnight but one of the many things he told me was that you can’t win them all.

Thanks again!

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
