A Masterpiece from the Detroit News

There’s a headline I’ll bet you’d never expected to see here, eh?  It’s well-earned.  John Niyo, Ted Kulfan and Bob Wojnowski recently sat down with Mike Ilitch, Jimmy Devellano, Jim Nill, Scotty Bowman and Ken Holland.  Name a hot topic the last twenty five years and they touch on it: the defections from the Eastern Bloc, the brilliant drafts of ‘83 and ‘89, the near-trade of Steve Yzerman and the current mindset of us against the NHL.

Devellano: Kenny Holland and I have been in the company of at least two general managers—and I won’t tell you who they are—(who said), ‘We can hardly wait until we have a salary cap so we’re on a level playing field with you.’ (They were) intimating that once the salary cap is in place, they’re going to come and pass us. Well, one team missed the playoffs last year, now that they’re on an even playing field, and the other just about caught us but didn’t quite do it.

Spend the next three seconds of your life trying to guess who Devellano’s referring to, then read the rest of the story here and the full transcript here

Okay, let’s try and figure out who these two guys were:

The second one is obviously Poile out of Nashville.  While it’d be sublime if the first one was Lacroix, I think it was Lowe.

and the Wings are moving to the Eastern Conference!

Great news, but I don’t trust Little Gary....

Who is the referee who hurt the Wings in the 1994 playoffs and again in 2007?

That was a pretty good article.  Too bad we didn’t see that kind of longer piece more often.

I’m not sure why the News got this, but I’m glad they did. This is a smart angle from which to bolster the PR attack, and I’m happy to see them thinking this way.

The referees for the 2007 game were Paul Devorski & Don Koharski, according to nhl.com’s scoresheet.

From the history I can find, Detroit lost game 7 to Toronto in 1993, not 1994, but I haven’t been able to find data for that game.  The NHL officials website says both Devorski & Koharski officiated their first playoff game prior to ‘93, so that route is no help.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
